I am not convinced that Philip will get the full story...but maybe Chloe will surprise me!

Chapter 6a
Philip carried Parker into the house and locked the front door behind him. “Well, this is it. We’re home.”
Chloe lifted her head and scanned the house. The floor plan was completely open and was centered around the living room. Everything was visible from there. The kitchen and dining area were to the left. The kitchen had a high-tech look with black stainless steel appliances, a ceramic cooktop, white cabinets, a black and white marble countertop, and white barstools with wrought iron backs.
A sliding glass door leading out to a terrace was straight ahead, directly across from the front door. And a wrought iron spiral staircase to the right of the living room led to a second story balcony level.
“Philip, this is lovely.”
“Thanks. I lucked out actually. A marine biologist and her husband lived here and they just finished remodeling the place when she got transferred to California and had to sell in a hurry. I can tell you, I would not have had the patience for a fixer-upper.” He set Parker on his feet. “There’s two bedrooms upstairs and a guest room downstairs. Take your pick.”
“Where do you sleep?” she asked.
“Upstairs. Better view.”
“In that case, I guess we’ll sleep upstairs too if you don’t mind,” she said. “I think I’d … we’d feel safer.”
“Whatever you’d like.” He was gratified to know she felt safe being near him.
Holding Holly, Chloe went over to the sliding glass door.
“You can see both the Gulf and the Atlantic from here,” he told her.
“I’ll have to take your word for it. Hard to see anything at this time of night, but I can see what looks like some lights across the way.”
“Those would be houseboats on the water.”
She turned around. “Um. We have nothing to wear to bed.”
“I can give you and Parker some t-shirts. I'll take you shopping tomorrow.”
She rocked Holly. “Yeah, well, I have no money either, and I won’t take money from you. You’re not rich anymore.”
“Money is definitely finite these days. But I always knew it was a matter of time until my father disowned me again, so I saved most of what I earned working for Titan, and that’s a pretty good savings.”
“Still, I don’t want to take advantage," she told him. "You’ve already done so much for us.”
“Then consider it a loan.”

Chloe sure has softened. I wonder how long it will be before she and Philip end up sharing a bed.

I’d like to see her actually tell him something true

Wonder what’s caused this sudden softening from Chloe?

I wonder what made Chloe suddenly wake up and realize how much Philip is sacrificing for her. I still feel like her niceness out of nowhere is actually a stall on telling Philip the truth.... Wonder what’s caused this sudden softening from Chloe? I'm going to guess it was the realization of the fact that Philip dropped everything to check on her, then when her parents condo was ransacked, he protected her by chartering a plane without hesitation and whisking her and the children off to safety and bringing her to his home and proven he's on her side. I don't think Chloe has felt safe in a long time.

I'm glad they made it safely to Philip's house.
I think spending time with Philip is reminding her of their friendship.

Ok, Chloe. Put the kids to bed and then spill your story, sister!

Chapter 6b
Parker yawned, practically asleep on his feet. Philip scooped him into his arms and said to Chloe, “Follow me. I’ll show you where you’re sleeping.” They made their way up the spiral staircase. “If I knew there’d be small children living here, I wouldn’t have gotten a place with a staircase like this.”
“It’s fine Philip.”
“I presume you want the kids in the same room with you.”
“I do.”
“There’s towels in the hall closet, so help yourself.” He put Parker down on the bed.
“We can put together a makeshift crib for Holly using towels and extra blankets and pillows, if you have enough,” Chloe suggested.
“They’re in the hall closet also. I’m sure I have an extra toothbrush or two somewhere. Let me go check.”
While Philip was gone, Chloe changed Holly’s diaper and took off Parker’s shirt and pants, leaving him in an undershirt and underpants.
Philip returned with provisions. “Okay, here are a few fresh t-shirts and two new toothbrushes. And check this out. An air mattress. All you have to do is pull this plunger and it inflates automatically.”
“Parker’s going to love that.” She glanced at Holly. “I’m going to need to get more diapers tomorrow.”
“We’ll take a ride into the village in the morning. It’s not Fifth Avenue. Heck, it’s not even the Horton Town Center, but there’s an outdoor mall and they have most everything you’ll need.”
“Sounds quaint,” she smiled. Parker was lying in bed fast asleep. “Look, he’s asleep already. I hate to wake him up to move him to the air mattress.”
Philip nodded and tried to stifle a yawn. “I can move him if you want.”
“I can manage. You should get some sleep. Look, let’s have that talk tomorrow, instead of tonight, okay?” she asked. “I think we’re all exhausted, especially you.”
“Sure, tomorrow is good,” he agreed. “But Chloe, I need to know what we’re dealing with. Like it or not, I’m involved.” He put his fingers to his forehead. “Up to here.”
“I know, and I will. I promise.” She stepped closer to him and kissed his cheek. “Thank you for everything. I really didn’t know what I was going to do after my mother called.” She touched her pocket, forgetting for a second that she didn’t have a phone anymore. “I’m dying to call her and see how she and my dad are doing.”
“We’ll get you a disposable phone tomorrow. We don’t want anything that can be traced.” He looked at the bed. “You have everything you need for now?”
“I think so.”
“I’m right next door if you need me. Day or night.”
Chloe forced a smile. “Thank you.”

I fully agree that everyone is exhausted, but I think this is a delay tactic on Chloe's part. Tomorrow, the kids will be awake and she won't want to talk about this then either.

I agree with mae00. Chloe is procrastinating and she's very good at it. Parker is seven or eight. There's no reason he can't handle Philip's stairs.

It makes sense to wait until they are more awake for Chloe to talk to Philip. It seems likely to be a long conversation that neither of them is ready to have tonight.

I’m torn. I want them to sleep first and talk later so there’s no excuse for not getting a full explanation. But the whole “Chloe forced a smile” thing has me super skeptical and wishing that Philip had pushed her to talk and maybe the sleepiness might lead Chloe to let things slip that she might not if she’s wide awake.... Yikes.
