DancingDays asked this question in another thread, but it seemed worthy of its own topic, so ...
I would rather see Philip be recast than off the canvas. I think there's a lot of story left for Philip. Of course, I wish Jay Johnson were staying, but I don't want Philip to leave with Jay. If there is a recast, it had better be worthy of the character, and better than the last recast. I hope the show has left the door wide open for Johnson to return in the role.

@kpatch- I thought you would like that question. I would also rather see it recast, but it would have to be the best recast in history. The new guy has big shoes to fill and had better bring his A-game. Oh, and he'd better be smokin' hot too!

Ok, guys, then give me a recast that you liked on this show...Most that come to mind I always seemed to prefer the original, well the exception of Bill Horton but that's because the 2 previous had passed away... Ooh, got 1, I prefer Lauren Koslow to Debra Adair.
I am writing this because do you really think there will be a suitable recast? I doubt it myself.

After thinking about it some more, I've changed my mind. No one can replace Jay. Period. He IS Philip. But if he wants to take some time off, that's ok. I can deal with a substitute FOR A WHILE. But if Jay's never coming back (and I mean NEVER), I'd rather him be written off. Dead. Hong Kong. Chicago. I don't care. But no bad recast please.
I think, overall, I just want to see CHLOE happy. I like the potential of a Chloe/Brady/Nicole thing. That could be fun. But Chloe deserves some happiness in here somewhere.

I may be in the minority, but I'd rather see Philip off canvas than have a recast.Jay's shoes are just too big to fill and I really don't trust the show to do him justice.Besides,if they want to redo Phloe (Philip/Chloe)I really would prefer it be the original actors,it just wouldn't feel right otherwise.

I am not sure. I hate to see Philip leave, but not sure a differnt person can play Philip well enough. Jay is just Philip. Kind of like Carroll O'Conner was Archie Bunker. No one else could have done the roll as well as he did.

I've been off and on. I am too happy with the way things are going with him and Chloe that I keep hoping they will recast but at the same time, as jaysdelina said, JKJ's shoes are going to be hard to fill. I was also Hoping this Quinn person might actually turn out to be a Philip recast but i know, wishful thinking. I just hate to think of anything wrecking Chloe and Philip now.

For me, Jay is Philip. I would still give a recast a chance, but I would not be happy with anyone that cannot match or exceed in talent and looks. Period. I think Philip is needed because of his place in Salem and his existing family members more than for any relationship possibility.

I believe that Philip should not be recasted since 90% of the time, recasts just don't work. I am one of those people who become invested in both the character and the actor playing the character and to me it is too hard to watch a new actor take over a role especially when the role was acted out by an actor who had it for a long period of time. I happen to enjoy the way JKJ made this role all his own and I would not be able to enjoy the character of Philip anymore if a new actor came on and changed the character to the way he wants to play him. JKJ put way too much work and effort to mode Philip into a very likable character and I don't want to see the character become ruined by having another actor take over the role. Even though there is still a lot of storylines that could be written for Philip, I would rather at this time have Philip receive a really good exit story which would allow Philip to come back to Salem if JKJ would decide to reprise the role again in the future. If the role would be recasted, I would hope that days would at least wait 6 months to a year to do so in order to make it easier to see a new actor in the role. I absolutely hate it when soaps recast actors right away and you are watching one day with the old actor and the next day the new actor appears. It just takes me way too long to get used to the new actor in the role when this happens. General Hospital does this a lot it seems whenever it wants to take a character in a new direction and it drives me nuts watching because just as I get used to an actor I end up having to get used to a new actor in the role.

I voted no recast. I actually liked Kyle Brandt's Philip, but JKJ is Philip. A recast won't work IMO ... and there are worst things than having a favorite character off canvas. Sami is a prime example. I'd rather have her offscreen in Hong Kong with Lucas than see her continue to be written so completely out of character. Not trying to get off topic here, just using her as an example of why a rest period for Philip might be better than having him poorly written and used as nothing but a prop for newer characters. I am of the opinion, just my own personal opinion, no insider scoop or anything, that Jay, Shelley and Mark all left for the same reason but Jay and Shelley were more gracious about it. The writing has not been what it should have been for Philip and if the writers/producers don't value a character, it can be better for the character to be rested than destroyed under a hostile regime, JMO.

Although you and I disagree on Kyle Brandt Kazz,I have to say,I agree with everything else you said.Jay,Shelley and Mark got pretty much nothing (although what Jay and Shelley DID get they played wonderfully).I'd rather have Philip off screen and mentioned by family and friends, rather than have him still have nothing to do.

I'm on the fence. I love JKJ and the character of Philip....just can't decide which one I love more! ;D If I knew the answer to that then I'd be able to decide which way to go on this issue.

I didn't mind Kyle Brandt as Phillip (mainly because I watched him on the Real World and liked him from there) but now I cannot picture anyone else being Phillip. JKJ is Phillip and I don't think anyone else would meet my expectations of what Phillip should be. I mean really, they would have to find another actor that has dimples and can use them at will

I didn't mind Kyle Brandt as Phillip (mainly because I watched him on the Real World and liked him from there). That was my problem with him the whole time he was on. He was always "that guy from the Real World." I had a really hard time taking him seriously. And I liked him on the Real World. Just not on Days.
