Chapter 9
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
It was very dark. She could hear voices.
DR. POPPINS: I'm getting some brain activity...
Then, Jan opened her eyes.
DR. POPPINS: She's awake. After almost seven years, she's come out of her coma.
Dr. Poppins looked at a computer screen.
DR. POPPINS: This is the strangest case I've ever seen.
NURSE: What's strange about it?
DR. POPPINS: Look at this.
Dr. Poppins pointed to the screen.
DR. POPPINS: After six and a half years of being in a coma, there doesn't appear to be any brain damage whatsoever.
Dr. Poppins turned to Jan.
DR. POPPINS: Can you hear me?
JAN: Yes.
DR. POPPINS: She's speaking. (to Jan) What's your name?
JAN: Jan Britney Spears.
DR. POPPINS: Date of birth?
JAN: November 12th, 1982.
DR. POPPINS: Good. My name is Dr...
JAN: Dr. Mary Poppins. I...I remember you.
DR. POPPINS: Remember me? Oh, you must have heard my voice while you were in a coma. I didn't come to work at this hospital until earlier this year. I was put on your case at the beginning of the summer.
JAN: You were in my dream.
DR. POPPINS: Was I?
JAN: In my dream, I had a baby. And you were my OB-GYN
DR. POPPINS: Interesting.
JAN: So...Dr. Poppins, what happens now?
DR. POPPINS: Well, dear, now that you're awake and we know you're responsive, we need to get you into rehab. You've been in a coma for almost seven years. So, naturally, it's going to take a bit of time to adjust to life in 2011. But, don't worry, we have some of the best professionals on the case that will be helping you.
Daniel walked into the room.
DANIEL: Can I help with anything?
DR. POPPINS: No, Jonas, she's already been raped once in her life. We don't need you groping her. Besides, shouldn't you be getting home to your wife?
DANIEL: Oh...yes...by the way...Dr. Poppins...I just want to say...that you...are...the most...beautiful...
DR. POPPINS: Shut up before I have to smack you.
DANIEL: Okay.
Daniel left.
DR. POPPINS: Sorry about all that.
JAN: It's okay. Even in my dreams, Dr. Jonas was kinda creepy.
DR. POPPINS: Yeah. He gets that a lot.
JAN: So, I have a question.
DR. POPPINS: What is it, dear?
JAN: It's about Shawn. Shawn-Douglas Brady. The son of Commissioner Bo Brady and Officer Hope Brady. Where is he?
DR. POPPINS: He and his wife are currently out of town.
Jan thought about this for a moment.
DR. POPPINS: Are you all right, dear?
JAN: I think so. I think I'm going to be okay.
And, she was.
