Great that Philip has a good friend he can easily talk to. He really needs this now.

I love the line about Mary and her coffee and the milk....
I think George is going to be a great sounding board for Philip (as usual) but also deliver some truth that he may not want to hear--mainly about Chloe and her relationship with Philip. I wish Chloe had someone like George in her life that could do the same. Dr Richards is all well and good, but Chloe needs a friend who won't get her all wound up like Nicole or Daniel do without being very helpful.

If Philip feels Mary has an agenda, something is wrong somewhere. What George does is what a good therapist does.
I'm glad Philip and George are going to talk though.

Yeah, if Philip feels Mary has an agenda, that's a problem. A good therapist shouldn't have an agenda. I'm glad to see that Philip and George are good friends and can talk about stuff like this, though.

I'm glad that Philip went to George.
Mary does have an agenda - to help Chloe and Philip and Parker. I'm sure her main focus is on Parker, so a lot of her "advice" does sound a little prejudiced. However, if Philip feels that there is something more behind Mary's "help" then he needs to address it and find someone else. I have to wonder tho - Chloe has a dependency on Mary. Could part of Philip's apprehension about Mary be due to that need of Chloe's?

Chapter 36b
While Philip sat in a chair in George’s office, George went to the Beer and Wine case, picked up a cold craft beer, went to customer service to scan it and pay for it. He plopped the beer bottle on the desk in front of Philip. “There you go.”
“Where’s yours?” Philip asked as he twisted off the bottle cap.
“Can’t drink on duty. But you drink up. Enjoy.”
"Thanks." Philip tilted his head back and took a long swig. He held the bottle neck and dangled it between his knees. “So we’re back where we started, huh?” Philip said, remembering the first time he and George talked. It was Christmas eve four years ago and Philip was a mess. He’d just learned Parker wasn’t his son and he was lost and alone. He wandered into the Jewel Osco store George was managing back then. The store was empty and he was closing up, but he took pity on Philip. The two of them sat on the floor and emptied a few six packs while Philip poured out his life story to George.
“Nah, you’re a lot stronger now than you were then,” George observed.
“Maybe, but it’s over. Again,” Philip said with a hint of resignation in his voice.
“‘Cept now you have a son. I mean when I first met you, you thought that doctor was Parker’s father.”
“You’re right, and I’m grateful. Beyond words.” Philip scowled for a moment. “Hey, I don’t think I thanked you for being there for Parker. It’s a miracle that he remembered me … and you … telling him to ‘trust George’ and he sought you out.”
“No thanks needed. If you want to know the truth, I’m flattered he thought of me.” He took a sip from his water bottle. “Lemme ask you. Let’s say it’s really over with Chloe. I know your goal was to be married to her, but suppose that don’t happen?”
Philip’s face fell and he fought back tears. He looked down into his beer bottle. “Then I guess the rest of my life will be pretty empty.”
“Hey hey, that’s pretty maudlin, man. If I were a shrink, I’d tell you that you shouldn’t pin all your hopes on one person.”

Thank you, George! No one should have their happiness all wound up in one other person. That's a lot of pressure to put on someone else, besides not being healthy in general.
I think George missed his calling and maybe HE should be a licensed therapist!

Bravo for George! He speaks the truth. Philip needs to learn that maybe just maybe Chloe isn't right for him, but they can still be great parents for Parker.

Good advice George, especially since that one person doesn't deserve his affections I hope he gets through to Philip

I have to who everyone else. George gave great advice. Now the question is, will Philip listen?

That was really good advice George gave Philip. Hope he follows it. Can we please have previews, Kpatch?

I'm pretty sure that George has more advice to give Philip and I really hope that they aren't interrupted - unless it's to help talk to Parker. George is right that Philip shouldn't pin all of his hopes and dreams on one person.

Yay George. Chloe and Philip seem to live a claustrophobic life - they need to get out and make some friends. I am surprised that Philip has not asked himself if relationships have to be that hard?
