SALEM UNIVERSITY
CIARA: Nope. I don’t see any reason that I would.
CLAIRE: I mean, I thought the invitation would be reason enough. How many people get the opportunity to go to something like this?
CIARA: Are we forgetting who the invitation is from?
CHASE: It’s from Hope’s friend, Miss Faversham.
CIARA: Okay, technically yes. But, come on, it’s really from...her.
CLAIRE: Oh, you mean Katalin.
CIARA: Exactly.
CLAIRE: Ciara, you’re not still holding a grudge against her, are you? We all know that what André did wasn’t her fault.
CIARA: Sure, I know that. But that doesn’t mean that I have to like her or try to be friends with her. It’s great that you two are, but I want to put that whole period of my life behind me. So, I’m sure you guys are gonna have a great time, but I don’t plan on joining.
CHASE: And I don’t suppose there’s anything we can say to change your mind?
CIARA: Nope. I’m not going.
Claire sighed.
CLAIRE: Okay, if you’re sure.
Meanwhile, Manny was sitting at the desk in her dorm room. Allie walked in, talking on the phone.
ALLIE: So, you’ll let me know what they say? Okay. Right, that makes sense. Thanks.
Allie hung up, sighed and sat on the bed.
MANNY: Rough day, chica?
ALLIE: Not exactly. My classes are at least interesting.
Manny put her pen down and turned to look at Allie.
MANNY: Well, something’s on your mind.
ALLIE: It’s that kitten I found the other night out by the main building. I guess the vet clinic found the people who owned her mother, and are working on getting in contact with them.
MANNY: Gotcha. You really got attached to that kitten, huh?
ALLIE: I guess. I mean, she’s so small, and now that I know that she has an owner, I can’t stop wondering why she and her mother weren’t with them. I know I only spent a couple hours with her, and most of that was at the vet, but I just wanna take care of her.
MANNY: Man, you are one heck of an animal lover. It’s a good thing Mami had that job opening for you.
ALLIE: I’m glad she did, too. I’ve always loved animals, but I didn’t know how much until Ricky showed me around your Mom’s nature center.
MANNY: It’s a good fit for you. And, maybe getting a pet would be a good fit for you.
ALLIE: Thanks, Mandella.
She sighed again.
ALLIE: Sorry for making it all about me. How are you? How’s your day?
MANNY: Don’t be sorry, I’m actually really interested in where this thing with the kitten you found is going. And I’m good. Or I will be once this quiz is over. Unfortunately, that won’t be until Monday.
ALLIE: I could help you study, if you want. We could make a quiz game out of it.
MANNY: I am so glad you said that, because I have been spending the last hour making flashcards.
ALLIE: Oh, this’ll be fun, then!
Manny handed a stack of flashcards to Allie, who began shuffling them.
WEST HOUSE
The end credits of a show had just begun on the TV in Silver’s room. Sydney sat up.
SYDNEY: Wow!
SILVER: Yeah!
SYDNEY: That was so good!
SILVER: Right? I love it!
SYDNEY: Me too! That was awesome!
SILVER: Altogether there are thirty episodes. We can watch more, if you want to.
SYDNEY: That’d be great! I can see why you love this show.
Silver sat up and took a drink of sparkling grape juice. Both she and Sydney had glasses and the bottle was on Silver’s desk.
SILVER: I’m so glad you enjoy it as much as I do!
SYDNEY: For sure! And, I can totally see why you compared our friendship to Anne and Diana’s!
SILVER: Well, we are best friends, so I thought it was fitting. Though, if it weren’t the 1890s, I have a feeling Anne and Diana might have been more.
Sydney sipped her glass.
SILVER: Oops. That didn’t sound flirty did it? ‘Cause I didn’t mean it to, but now that I think about it, it kinda sounded like I was saying I thought we should be more, which I know we can’t be, and I totally understand that. Did I just mess things up?
SYDNEY: No, no you’re good. I understand what you meant.
SILVER: Okay, good. Sorry, I just don’t want things to be awkward for us now that we’re finally getting back on track.
SYDNEY: I don’t want that, either. And you didn’t make it awkward. Like I said, I get what you were trying to say.
SILVER: Gotcha.
SYDNEY: We’re totally good. Let’s just watch the next episode and have fun.
SILVER: Sounds good.
Silver pressed play on the remote control, then both girls set down their glasses, laid on the bed and watched the TV.
