Chapter 596
SALEM INN
Chloe was walking Kinsey back to her room at the Salem Inn.
KINSEY: Do you really have to go already?
CHLOE: I wish I didn’t. But, I do have work to do, both in Chicago and elsewhere, now that I have an agent who actually knows how to book good venues.
KINSEY: Well, I’m glad for that, at least.
CHLOE: Me too. And hey, it’s not like I’m going away forever. I’ll be back.
KINSEY: I know. I’ll miss you, though.
CHLOE: I’ll miss you, too.
Kinsey and Chloe hugged.
CHLOE: Take care of yourself, Kinsey.
KINSEY: I will. You too. Thanks for everything the last few days. I seriously don’t know what I’d do without you.
CHLOE: Well, you’re welcome. If you need anything, just give me a call.
KINSEY: I’ll remember. Thanks. Bye.
CHLOE: Bye.
Chloe turned around and went back to her car. Kinsey watched as she drove away, then turned to look at the door of her room at the Inn. She sighed before putting the key in the door and going inside. Mia was already there. She stood up when Kinsey walked in.
MIA: There you are!
KINSEY: Here I am.
MIA: Where have you been? I’ve been trying to call you for the last three days!
KINSEY: I had some stuff to take care of. And now it has been.
MIA: What sort of stuff? What takes three days for you to take care of?
KINSEY: Doesn’t matter.
MIA: Uh, yeah it does. Come on, Kinsey, it’s me. You can trust me.
KINSEY: So you say. Yet you still won’t tell me where you were, why you kept me waiting for seven months. But, it doesn’t really matter. You have your secrets, and I have mine. You don’t wanna share, that’s up to you. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve had a very stressful few days, so I am gonna go have some fun and relieve some stress.
Kinsey picked up a backpack near her bed.
MIA: You’re leaving already? You just got here!
KINSEY: Yep. See ya. Don’t wait up.
Kinsey closed the door behind her.
KINSEY (thinking): The last thing I need is Mia finding out about what happened. Even though the judge found me innocent, she’d probably use it to make my life a living hell.
Kinsey sighed and walked down the hall to the front desk.
RECEPTIONIST: How can I help you?
KINSEY: Hi, I’m Kinsey Taylor, Room 107. Can I ask for a room change?
SALEM UNIVERSITY
It was the night of the karaoke party. A stage had been set up in Harrison’s, which was a bar like cafeteria (although they didn’t actually serve alcohol) at the college. Claire, Chase and Maddox were behind the curtain. Maddox looked at his watch.
MADDOX: A few minutes until showtime.
CHASE: Where’s Alanis?
MADDOX: She’ll be here.
Alanis ran behind the stage.
ALANIS: Hey, sorry for the wait.
CLAIRE: It’s okay. You’re here now, that’s what matters.
ALANIS: How long until we’re on?
CHASE: We should be next.
MADDOX: Got the sheet music for the piano?
ALANIS: Yep.
Alanis held up some papers in her hand.
MADDOX: You good?
ALANIS: Yep.
Alanis nodded.
MADDOX: All right. Let’s do this.
The act before them went offstage. Claire, Chase, Alanis and Maddox walked onto the stage. A few people, mostly their friends, clapped. On the stage was a piano and a set of drums. Claire pulled her guitar around, and she and Chase watched as Alanis and Maddox got set up. Finally, they were ready and Maddox clapped his drumsticks together a few times.
MADDOX: One, two, three, four.
CLICK HERE to listen along. Claire began playing her guitar while Chase snapped his fingers and Maddox drummed. A moment later, Alanis began playing the piano and humming. Then...
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): Pressure. Pressing down on me, pressing down on you, no man ask for. Under Pressure.
ALANIS (singing): That burns a building down, splits a family in two.
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): Puts people on streets.
CLAIRE (singing): It's the terror of knowing what this world is about. Watching some good friends screaming…
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): "Let me out!"
ALANIS (singing): Pray tomorrow gets me higher…
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): Pressure on people, people on streets.
ALANIS (singing): Chipping around, kick my brains around the floor. These are the days it never rains but it pours
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): People on streets. People on streets.
CLAIRE (singing): It's the terror of knowing what this world is about. Watching some good friends screaming.
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): 'Let me out'!
ALANIS (singing): Pray tomorrow gets me higher, and higher, and higher…
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): Pressure on people, people on streets. Turned away from it all like a blind man. Sat on a fence, but it don’t work.
CLAIRE (singing): Keep coming up with love but it’s so slashed and torn.
ALANIS (singing): Why? Why? Why?
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): Love, love, love, love, love!
CLAIRE (singing): Insanity laughs, Under Pressure, we’re cracking.
ALANIS (singing): Can’t we give ourselves one more chance? Why can’t we give love that one more chance? Why can’t we give love? Give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love?
CLAIRE (singing): ‘Cause love’s such an old fashioned word. And love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night and love dares you to change our way of…
CLAIRE & ALANIS (singing): Caring about ourselves. This is our last dance. This is our last dance. This is ourselves. Under Pressure. Under Pressure. Pressure.
The crowd cheered and clapped as the song ended. Alanis and Maddox stood up, and then they, Claire and Chase took a bow and walked behind the stage.
ALANIS: Okay, that was awesome!
CLAIRE: It really was!
CHASE: You all did great out there!
CLAIRE: We, you mean. You were part of it, too.
Claire and Chase kissed.
MADDOX: Well, that was fun.
ALANIS: It totally was! That was seriously the best! Come on, let’s go celebrate!
Claire, Chase and Maddox followed Alanis.
