Chapter 37
S.S. BO BRADY
JOEY: You're not serious.
JADE: Of course I'm serious.
JOEY: You would actually accuse me of raping you just to make sure I stayed with you?
JADE: Well, I can't trust the baby's real father, and I was hoping it would have been you, anyway. So yeah, I'm willing to do whatever I have to do to make sure you stay with me and take care of the baby.
JOEY: So, I was right. It is Dirk.
JADE: It doesn't matter who the baby's real father is. For all intents and purposes, you are the father of my child.
JOEY: You know that nobody will believe you!
JADE: Yes, they will. All I'd have to do was say that you coerced me into it, or got me drunk at a party and had your way with me. The majority of the time, all that counts is the woman's side of the story unless they can prove consent. And really, how do you prove consent?
JOEY: My parents will never believe you.
JADE: Like I care what they think. Oh, but wait, you do. You've always wanted to make your parents proud of you. Hm, too bad for you, then.
JOEY: So, this is what it's come to. I knew you were messed up, Jade, but I didn't think even you were this cruel!
JADE: I'm doing what I have to do for the good of my child. I will not be a single parent. You are the easiest one to believe would be my baby's father, because you actually care.
Joey turned the other way.
JADE: Come on, Joey. Admit it. Even though you don't want to, even though I drove you crazy and hurt your friends, you still care about me. I know you do.
JOEY: So, if I do agree to say that the kid is mine, then you'll leave my family alone?
JADE: In the sense that I won't accuse you of rape...
JOEY: Which I didn't do.
JADE: You and I may know that, but nobody else does. Let's put it this way, we'll have to act like parents. I'll always be a part of your life, and so will my baby, so of course I'll see your family from time to time. But, no, I won't intentionally do any harm to them.
JOEY: And if I don't go along with this crazy charade, you'll accuse me of rape.
JADE: And you'll probably go to jail. So, which is it, Joey? A lifetime with me and my baby, or a lifetime in jail for something you didn't do?
JOEY (thinking): I don't know which one's worse.
He turned to look at Jade, who had a devious smile on her face. He shook his head.
JOEY: You know my family won't believe you, especially not my parents.
JADE: You'll make them believe me. You know what'll happen if you don't.
Joey hesitated.
JOEY: So, I guess I'm a father, then.
JADE: There we go.
Jade wrapped her arms around Joey.
JADE: You and I and our baby are gonna be so happy together.
Joey grimaced. Meanwhile, Claire walked out of the bathroom and was just about to head back to the Gold Ballroom, when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
CLAIRE: What the...?
She was quickly turned around, and found a knife against her neck. In her ear, she heard a man's voice.
PIRATE 1: Now what is a pretty little thing like you doing out here at this time of night, eh?
Claire gulped.
PIRATE 1: Nothing to say? Good.
The Pirate smiled and put a wet rag over Claire's mouth. Claire struggled for a moment, then went limp. The Pirate sniggered.
