In terms of previews, it’s a little hard since I’m not on my usual schedule, but I can tell you that …

-Philip and Chloe arrive at his man cave.
-Chloe has an unpleasant reaction to what she sees.
-Philip stalls.

Chapter 2a


Philip took his jacket off when they entered the apartment. Looking around, Chloe said, “So this is the corporate apartment where clients stay when they’re in town. It’s nice,” she said as she put her purse on a chair near the door.

Philip shrugged. “It’s not exactly home, but it’s alright I guess. Can I get you a drink,” he asked as he came up behind Chloe to help her off with her jacket.

“Maybe later,” she answered, closing her eyes while he slipped off her coat and nuzzled the back of her neck.

“It was intended for short-term stays,” he said, matter-of-factly, “not extended stays.”

Chloe’s eyes flew open and she quickly whirled around. “I’m sorry Philip. I’m so sorry you’ve had to live here all by yourself instead of at the condo with us where you belong.”

“Shhh shhh shhh. It’s okay.” He rested his hands on her shoulders and slid them down her arms until he caught her hands in his. “That’s all behind us now. This is a new start.” Chloe nodded and they locked eyes for a moment. Philip swallowed hard. He broke the gaze and looked downward. “Damn.”

“What’s wrong?”

Looking back up at her, he took a deep breath. “Nothing. Nothing’s wrong. I was just thinking about that time on your parents’ porch during that rain storm when I looked into your eyes and ….”

“And you said you were looking into the eyes of the woman you’d be with forever.” When Philip nodded, Chloe said, “I’ll never forget that moment either. It’s kind of been a long rocky road to forever, huh?”

Nodding again, Philip sighed. “I was pretty naive back then.”

“Not really. Idealistic, maybe. A hopeful romantic.”

He smiled broadly. “I’m glad you didn’t say ‘hopeless.’”

“Jamais. Never.” Chloe took a step closer to Philip and rested her hands on his shoulders, closing the space between them. Looking deeply into his eyes, she slipped her hand behind Philip’s neck and pulled him closer until her lips met his. He put his arms around her and pulled her in closer. When she felt his arousal, she broke the kiss. “Show me your bedroom,” she whispered. Philip smiled and nodded.
