Chapter 3
Philip led Chloe into his bedroom. He released her hand. “This place is a mess,” he observed, and immediately went over to the bed and started straightening up the cover sheet.
Chloe came up behind him and touched his arm. “Philip, stop. It’s fine.”
“I didn’t know I was having company,” he said, lifting one of the pillows and clapping it between his hands so it would sit inside the pillowcase properly.
Chloe grabbed the pillow from him and tossed it onto the bed. “I’m not company, Philip. I don’t care if the bed’s a mess.”
“There should be candles and rose petals,” he said remorsefully.
“Look at me, Philip.” Tugging on his arm, she said, “I don’t need candles and roses. The only thing I need is you.”
Philip turned and faced Chloe. “You already have me, but….”
“Philip, stop,” she said, taking his hand. “Things don’t have to be perfect. If we wait for perfection, we’ll never make love.”
Taking a deep breath, Philip rubbed his forehead. “You’re right. I don’t know why I’m acting this way. I mean, I’m never tentative. I always know what I want and I dive right in, especially when it comes to you.” He took a step closer and held Chloe’s waist. “But tonight feels so … so important.”
“It is important. But so is tomorrow. And the day after,” she said.
"Now you sound like me," he chuckled.
"It was a wise man who once told me the future isn't just one night. Remember?" Eying his necktie, she began to unknot it. “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you unsure of yourself before, and I have to say — you’re adorable when you’re nervous,” she laughed.
Philip smirked. “And when I’m not nervous?”
“Still adorable,” she replied as she slid his tie off and tossed it to the floor before turning her attention to his belt buckle.
Looking down to watch her unbuckle his belt, he laughed lightly. “So you think you’re gonna have your way with me, huh?”
Smiling broadly, Chloe shook her head and said, “Uh uh. I don’t think. I know.”
