I've tried and tried to get on board with this actor, but I just can't do it. Nothing about him is Philip. He's so....disjoined from everyone and everything that is Philip. When Kate said that she didn't want to focus on the past, she was excited about a "NEW" start, I have no doubt she was referring to the character re-write. The guy has the right length/color hair, but hair/makeup needs to lay off the oil. He looks like he hasn't showered in a month. His demeanor isn't even right. Philip was not a "all profit regardless of the risk" person. He cared about his family and those around him. I can't see Philip as sacrificing Caroline's safety for the benefit of the business. I also don't see him as putting Maggie in a position to feel awkward in regards to him vs Brady. If anything, things should be awkward because of Melanie. Even before the "egg baby" reveal, Maggie was extremely close to Melanie and defended/protected her from Philip.
As Kpatch said, his acting is very flat. There's very little emotion and when there is, it's about taking over Titan. Philip has many layers to him.....it's not always about business that he is passionate about, yet that's all we've seen since he's been back in Salem. Philip was snarky and sarcastic at times, but there was always something underneath that. This Philip just seems to be snarky and an ass all the time for no reason.
I'm still trying to keep an open mind because he is still very new on the screen, but each time I see/hear him, it gets harder to do.
I want OUR Philip back. Not this imposter!  |

Couldn't agree more...... everything you point out is so true.... where Jay had layers and nuances to Philip, this actor is flat and playing on one characteristic no matter who he is interacting with...his interaction with Kate was cold and unfeeling, where Jay's Philip AND Philip, really cared for and loved Kate, no matter what the circumstances and he was always warm and responsive toward her... finally, absolutely no chemistry between him and Belle! I'm still trying to keep an open mind because he is still very new on the screen, but each time I see/hear him, it gets harder to do

Still can't accept John Paul as Philip.... he is not Philip. His acting is flat and lacks any semblance of emotion or thought behind the lines. There is no substance to how he delivers lines and movement, gestures and facial expressions lack any motivation or feeling. I've watched his scenes several times and just see someone standing and mouthing words. His interaction with other characters lacks any connection. Why is he talking to these A people; why is he being snarky to some. I get nothing from him! A really disappointing recast.
He needs to be released and Jay should be persuaded to return and bring the real Philip back to Salem!

I liked John Paul on One Life to Live and I think he's a pretty good actor but he's just not Jay. I really can't see anybody but Jay as Philip. The only way I'll start back watching DOOL is if Jay returned! Without him I have no desire to watch.  ? |

I realize this is quite petty, but no one, especially JPL, can wear a suit as well as JKJ. Just compare the two and you'll understand.JPL....      Now look at JKJ..... what a difference!      and especially wearing a tux!

I tried really hard to watch Days today and I just couldn't do it. No matter how hard JPL tries, he will never be Philip. He can't even get Jay's mannerisms down right or the way he stands or his facial expressions. This goes down as one of the worst recasts of all time

Jay DEF wears a suit better!!!!!! JPL isn't even close to being built like JKJ. Jay has broader shoulders and has more muscle tone then JPL. I would much rather see JKJ vs JPL |

I posted the pictures, not because I like what JPL is doing with Philip, but to show how he lacks the depth and expressiveness that Jay brings to the role..... I don't think JPL will ever come close to creating the Philip that Jay did or truly who Philip is......... |

jaysfan, I agree with you. I still make the comparisons in my mind too and Jay played the emotional layers better than anyone, not just anyone who played Philip. Anyone period.

JPL's Philip is so one dimensional and static in comparison to Jay's. There is no nuance or shading to JPL's Philip. He has basically one facial expression, mouth open and a blank stare and his line delivery is staccato, lacking in cadence and variation. He sounds essentially the same no matter what he is saying. There is absolutely no subtext to his line delivery. He is stiff and lacking in emotion whereas Jay was fluid and extremely emotional, making his characterization very human and vulnerable. |
