I'm glad Parker made a good choice instead of fighting. Leave it to a preschooler to want his birthday lunch at McDonald's. Will there be previews Kpatch? |

Chapter 66e
“I’m hungry,” Parker said.
Philip looked at Chloe, then back at Parker. “Well, if your mom’s not too busy, how about if we take you to lunch right now, big guy?”
“McDonald’s?” Parker asked with wide-eyed excitement.
Chloe wrinkled her nose, so Philip thought for a minute. “I know. We’ll get pizza at Whole Foods.”
“Yeah!” Parker high-fived Philip with his approval.

Philip had called ahead to tell George they were coming to Whole Foods for Parker’s birthday lunch, so the store manager was there to greet them when they arrived. He had the staff tie a few balloons to chairs in the food court area and he placed a cardboard crown on Parker’s head.
Parker sat between his parents at one of the round wooden tables. George came over and sat with them for a bit and came back to check on his favorite customers every so often. George took a few pictures of the three of them with Chloe’s phone, and Chloe snapped a picture of Philip and Parker with matching tomato sauce mustaches from the pizza.
When George returned to the table, he leaned his hand on the back of Parker’s chair while Parker turned around to look at him. Parker was almost mesmerized by the large and jolly store manager with his graying hair. He reminded Parker of Santa Claus. Shaking a finger at the boy, he spoke with kindness. “Parker, I want you to remember something, okay? Make sure you come see me if you ever need anything, and I’ll take care of you,” George said, winking at Parker, “just like I take care of your dad.”
Parker’s eyes were wide as George was speaking. He looked at his mother, then his father. When Philip nodded, Parker turned back to George. “For real?”

Chapter 66f
“I want you to remember something, okay? Make sure you come see me if you ever need anything, and I’ll take care of you,” George said, winking at Parker, “just like I take care of your dad.”
Parker’s eyes were wide as George was speaking. He looked at his mother, then his father. When Philip nodded, Parker turned back to George. “For real?”
“Absolutely,” George said emphatically. “You’re five right? I remember when my boys were your age, and let me tell you, some of the best days of your life are ahead of you. This is gonna be a great year for you, buddy.”
Philip leaned over and touched Parker’s hand. Pointing at George, he said, “You should listen to George. George is your man, Parker. He helped me out when I was at one of the lowest points of my life and we’ve been good friends ever since. You can trust George.”
“Trust George!” Parker nodded and giggled.
George squeezed Parker’s shoulder from behind. “Your daddy is right Parker. Anything you need, you come see me.” George pointed toward Parker’s eyes with the index and middle fingers of one hand, and then back at his own eyes with the same two fingers and then back at Parker again. “I’m here for you, just like I’m here for your folks. Know what I mean?” When Parker nodded, George smiled and patted Parker’s head. “I’ll get you another pizza.”
“No more for me,” Chloe said. When Parker looked at her with worry, she smiled and ran her hand over Parker’s hair. “But the birthday boy can have whatever he wants.”
After pizza, George brought a small birthday cake to the Kiriakis’s table in the food court, and he arrived with a few foodservice workers so they could all sing happy birthday to Parker. Parker smiled from ear to ear and it was clear he felt like a king.
There would be other parties to celebrate his birthday throughout the week, but this one left an impression on Parker.
