THIS IS A TRUE STORY.

The events depicted took place in Salem in 2015.

At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed.

Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.

THE KING OF SPADES

Chapter 1

SALEM INN
A man in his mid-50s walked in. For the purposes of naming, we'll call him Spades. He wore a black trench coat and had an almost expressionless face. A bandage was just barely concealed by what looked like a self-done bowl cut. He walked up to the reception desk and handed the receptionist an I.D.
SPADES: Room, please.
RECEPTIONIST: Just you?
Spades looked at the woman for a moment.
SPADES: Why does that matter?
RECEPTIONIST: Well, if there's you and another person, then it's more money. The rate changes depending on how many people there are with you. And, we also charge an extra ten dollars for pets, like a dog or cat.
SPADES: What if I had a fish?
The receptionist blinked.
RECEPTIONIST: A fish?
SPADES: Yes, what if I had a fish? Would you charge an extra ten dollars for a fish? Or what if I had a pet iguana or a colony of ants?
The receptionist stared.
SPADES: What if I had a bacteria?
RECEPTIONIST: Sir, ba...
SPADES: I'm a student of institutions, sorry.
RECEPTIONIST: Sir, bacteria aren't pets.
SPADES: They could be.
Now, the receptionist was beginning to lose patience.
RECEPTIONIST: Sir, do you have a bet or not?
Spades smiled, cheekily.
SPADES (chuckling): No, it's just me.
The receptionist rolled her eyes, as Spades gave her a handful of cash, then walked away with the key to his hotel room.

Earlier that day

CAR
It was the middle of winter, and the snow lay thick on the ground. Spades was driving his car into the town of Salem. All of a sudden, the car skidded over a patch of black ice and swerved off the road, hitting a tree. As soon as the car stopped, the trunk popped open and a completely naked man jumped out and ran.
SPADES (under his breath): Dammit!
After taking a moment to get his bearings, Spades noticed that he was bleeding, and noticed a small scar that had formed on his forehead when he'd hit the tree, as his head had hit the steering wheel. He got out and looked around. In the not to far distance, he saw Salem University Hospital and began making his way there.

I'm already intrigued. I'm looking forward to finding out more about Spades as well as the identity of the naked trunk guy.

Chapter 2

Earlier

SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
It took a little while, but Spades eventually made it to the hospital. He had been sitting there for a while, and was currently sitting next to Nicole, who had a blood stained tissue and an ice pack around her nose.
NICOLE: Ow!
Maxine walked past.
NICOLE: Maxine, do you know when the doctor will be ready?
MAXINE: He's got lots of patients today.
NICOLE: I know, but I've been here for over an hour.
MAXINE: That's the way it goes, sugar.
She walked away. Nicole winced. Spades glanced at her.
SPADES: So, how'd you get the broken nose?
NICOLE: It was stupid, really. Tried to get rid of this witch, Serena Mason. She's been a pain in my ass the last few months. Stole the guy I like, and then tries to act like I'm the bad guy. I mean, yeah, I screwed up big time, but I've tried to make that right. She's hated me since she first met me, and she's convinced this guy to hate me, too. Well, we got into a bit of a fight, it got physical, and here I am.
SPADES: I'd hate to say the other guy, though.
NICOLE: No, actually, she walked away with barely a scratch. And I wasn't even starting anything. I was over there to try and apologize. This lady is nuts!
Spades turned to face Nicole.
SPADES: Wait, miss, so you're saying that this chick comes into town, steals your man, makes him hate you even after you've done everything in your power to right whatever it is you've done...and you're the one who has to apologize to her?
NICOLE: Yeah, well, that's the way it goes, I guess.
SPADES: No offense, but if I were in your position...I'd have killed her by now.
Nicole did a double take.
NICOLE: Well, no. I can't do that. I wouldn't kill her.
SPADES: I'm guessing she's slept with this guy?
NICOLE: Probably, but...you see...it's really complicated. I'm Nicole, by the way. See, it all started when...
SPADES: No. Look, miss, we're not friends. I mean, maybe we could be, someday. But, like I said, if I were you, I would have killed her.
Nicole sighed and rolled her eyes.
NICOLE: That's crazy. Then again, it would get her out of the way. But I could never kill anybody. Heck, if you're so sure, maybe you should kill her for me.
Nicole chuckled, as she was only joking. It soon became apparent that Spades wasn't.
SPADES: Are you asking me to kill her?
Nicole looked at Spades.
NICOLE: What?
SPADES: Is that what you want, Nicole?
Maxine's voice called.
MAXINE: Nicole Walker.
Nicole turned to Maxine.
NICOLE: Just a sec.
She turned back to Spades.
NICOLE: Look, we were just talking, right? I was just blowing off steam, that's all.
SPADES: Just one word – yes or no?
MAXINE: Nicole!
Nicole put one finger up, to signal for Maxine to wait a minute.
SPADES: One word.
MAXINE: Look, Nicole, if you ain't coming, I'm gonna give your slot to someone else. We have a lot of patients today.
Nicole got up and looked at Maxine.
NICOLE: Yeah. Okay, I'm coming. I'm coming. Keep your pants on.
Nicole followed Maxine to a room. Spades smirked.

I think Spades is far more serious than Nicole realizes.

Uh oh. What kind of mess is Nicole getting into now?

Fantastic chapter André DiMera. I could picture Nicole sitting there with a cloth to her bloody nose and cursing Serena. I have a feeling Serena will be dead soon. I won't cry.
