Chapter 8

WATERHOLE
It is now the next day. Nicole and Mia were having breakfast.
MIA: So, the phone call last night, what was all that about?
NICOLE: It was about the next part of our trip.
MIA: Cool. Where are we going?
NICOLE: The outback. A little town called Alice Springs.
MIA: Sweet! So, when do we leave?
NICOLE: Tomorrow.
MIA: Wow...sooner than I thought. Still, at least I have today to practice on Brennan.
NICOLE: Precisely. Besides, I think you'll like Alice Springs. I have a little surprise planned for when we get there.
MIA: What kind of surprise?
NICOLE: If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise, would it?
MIA: Guess not.
NICOLE: Just wait and see.

LASSITER'S PARK
Later, Nicole was walking through the park while talking on her phone.
NICOLE: No, of course we're going to come.
Pause.
NICOLE: It's just gonna be a day or two.
Pause.
NICOLE: We have some unfinished business in Erinsborough. Besides, I though you were still in Botswana.
Pause.
NICOLE: Botswana, Belfast, same thing. At least it started with B.
Pause.
NICOLE: Look, I promised Lauren we'd have dinner with her and her family tonight. Tomorrow, we'll get on a plane and come out there.
Pause.
NICOLE: Yeah, you too. Bye.
Nicole hung up the phone.

FITZGERALD MOTORS
Mia and Brennan were in the car.
BRENNAN: The layout is basically the same as any car you'd get in America, just on the opposite side of the car. You've got your brakes and your accelerator. Use the same feet you would for them if you were driving in America. All the dials are in the same place. The ignition's still in the center, just use the opposite hand to move it. The only thing that's probably gonna be a bit difficult is the speedometer.
MIA: Yeah. I've noticed that the speed limit is way higher here than it is back home.
BRENNAN: Actually, though, it's not. It just looks different. See, in America, you use miles. Here, we use kilos, or kilometers.
MIA: So, let's say hypothetically that I passed a speed limit sign that said 90 out here.
BRENNAN: That's about 55, maybe 56 miles per hour in the U.S.
MIA: Wow! You are so good at this!
BRENNAN: Thanks. It just takes a little practice. That's all.
MIA: No, I mean it. I'm terrible at stuff involving cars. It just goes way over my head, usually. But, you explained it beautifully.
BRENNAN: No problem.
MIA: So, how can I pay you back?
BRENNAN: No need. Always glad to help out.
MIA: Well, I can think of one way.
BRENNAN: What?
Mia kissed Brennan.

Chapter 9

FITZGERALD MOTORS
MIA: So, how can I pay you back?
BRENNAN: No need. Always glad to help out.
MIA: Well, I can think of one way.
BRENNAN: What?
Mia kissed Brennan. Brennan backed away.
BRENNAN: What the hell are you doing?
MIA: Sorry. I guess I just got carried away.
BRENNAN: Look, Mia, you're a nice girl. But, we've only just met, and I've got a girlfriend. You can't just kiss somebody like that.
MIA: I'm sorry. I don't know what got into me.
Another car pulled in to the parking lot.
BRENNAN: I've got a customer. Gotta go.
MIA: Brennan, I'm...
Brennan got out of the car.
MIA: I'm sorry.

CAR
Later, Nicole and Mia were in the car.
NICOLE: That went well.
MIA: No kidding. I just wanna get out of here.
NICOLE: Tomorrow morning. We're having dinner with Lauren and her family tonight. That should be fun.
MIA: Yeah.

LAUREN'S HOUSE
Nicole and Mia walked up and knocked on the door. The door was opened by Lauren's father, Lou Carpenter.
LOU: G'day there, sunshine.
NICOLE: Oh my...Lou Carpenter?
LOU: Last I checked I am.
Lou chuckled and did a double take.
LOU: Well, as I live and breath! Nicole Walker, is that you?
NICOLE: Yep. It's me.
LOU: Come 'ere, you!
Lou and Nicole hugged.
NICOLE: It is so good to see you!
LOU: Oh, good to see you too, Nikki. When Lauren told me we were having guest for dinner, I never would've guessed in a million years. You're looking good.
NICOLE: Thanks! So do you! Lou, I want you to meet someone. This is my daughter, Mia. Mia, this is Lauren's dad, Lou.
MIA: It's nice to meet you.
Mia put out her hand to shake.
LOU: You too.
Lou put out both arms and hugged Mia.
LOU: Come in. Come in.
Lou led Nicole and Mia inside. Lauren walked in from the kitchen with two girls, Imogen and Amber, and a boy Josh.
LAUREN: Hullo, Nikki, Mia.
MIA: Hi.
NICOLE: Hi, Lauren.
LAUREN: I've got some people for you to meet.
Lauren pointed to the blonde.
LAUREN: This is my youngest daughter Amber.
Then, she pointed to the other girl and the boy.
LAUREN: And these are Brad's twins, Imogen and Josh. Kids, this is my old friend Nicole and her daughter Mia.
JOSH: Hiya.
AMBER: Hey.
IMOGEN: Hi.
NICOLE: Hello.
MIA: Hi.
JOSH: We're just here for a bit taking a swim.
MIA: You guys have a pool.
AMBER: Yeah. It's in back. You wanna come?
MIA: I'd love to! But, I don't have a swimming suit.
AMBER: You look about the same size as me. You can borrow one of mine.
MIA: Seriously?
AMBER: Yeah, come on. I'll show you.
Amber led Mia upstairs.

Lou was very welcoming. It should be a fun evening.

Chapter 10

LAUREN'S HOUSE
Amber was right, she and Mia were about the same size. Eventually, Mia and Amber walked into the backyard in swimming suits and got into the pool. Imogen and Josh were already there. The four started talking, and Mia was soon friends with all three.
JOSH: How long are you here for?
MIA: My mom and I are leaving tomorrow. She's kinda showing me around all of Australia.
IMOGEN: That's really cool! If you go anywhere, make sure you stop by Ayers Rock.
MIA: What's that?
IMOGEN: It's this giant sandstone rock formation in the Outback. When the sun shines on it, especially at sunset, it is the most gorgeous thing ever!
MIA: I'll have to ask my mom to check it out.
AMBER: Do you know where you're going next?
MIA: Funnily enough, the Outback. A place called Alice Springs.
AMBER: That's awesome! Alice Springs is so cool!
IMOGEN: Just watch out for the mosquitos out there. They are vicious!
Josh had been doing dives into the pool for the last few minutes. Mia was watching.
MIA: You're really good at that.
JOSH: Thanks.
Josh jumped in again.
IMOGEN: Josh, stop showing off for the new girl.
JOSH: I'm not showing off, I'm having fun.
Josh splashed Imogen.
IMOGEN: Oh, that is it!
Imogen splashed Josh. Soon, there was a full on splash war. All four were laughing.
MIA: This is awesome!
The splash war ended after a while.
AMBER: That really was fun, but I'm gonna go in and dry off.
IMOGEN: Me too. You guys coming?
MIA: I'll be in in a few minutes.
JOSH: I'll be there in a bit.
Amber and Imogen got out of the pool, collected their towels, and went inside.
MIA: That was so much fun!
JOSH: Yeah, it was awesome!
MIA: So, if you don't mind me asking, are you and Imogen...?
JOSH: What?
MIA: You know, are you...?
JOSH: What d'you mean?
MIA: Are you guys a thing? Are you together?
JOSH; What? No, no, no! She's, uh...she's my sister. My twin sister.
MIA: Oh. I'm so sorry.
JOSH: Don't be. You never know 'til you ask.
MIA: What about you and Amber?
JOSH: We were together once. Not anymore, though.
MIA: That sucks.
JOSH: Nah, it's all good. We're better as friends. Besides, my sister and Amber are practically inseparable, so we got over any potential awkwardness really quickly.
MIA: That's good.
They spent a few minutes swimming around, but both kept looking at each other.
MIA: I wish I didn't have to leave tomorrow.
JOSH: Maybe you could come back. Ask your mum if you can come back at the end of the trip.
MIA: I think I will. There's some people here I want to get to know better.
The two got closer. They touched hands.
MIA: So, you're a swimmer?
JOSH: Competitively? I was. Messed up my shoulder a year or two ago, so I just do it for fun now.
The two looked into each other's eyes. Then, the door opened. It was Lauren.
LAUREN: All right, lads. Come on in. Dinner's almost ready.
JOSH: Be right there.
Mia watched as Josh got out.
JOSH; You comin'?
MIA: Yep.
Mia got out of the pool. Josh handed her a towel.
