Chapter 6
WOODS
By now, the flames were dying down, and our three partners in crime were enjoying their s'mores.
LUCAS: You know, no matter how weird it is to be hosting a campfire over someone's remains, these s'mores are really good.
KATE: I second that.
SAMI: See? What'd I tell ya?
LUCAS: There's only one thing I don't understand...
SAMI: Just one?
LUCAS: Shut up.
Sami and Lucas laugh.
LUCAS: No, what I was saying was, how did you have the forethought to bring along gear for s'mores?
SAMI: Oh, I didn't. But, remember when I said that I got the gas can from a cabin a short walk from here?
LUCAS: Yeah?
SAMI: Well, they had all of the fixings for s'mores in the cabin, along with water, a book a matches, a gas can, and a few novels. I'm saving those for later, though.
At last, the flames died and flickered out. The three stood up and dusted themselves off.
SAMI: Well, there we go. It's finished.
LUCAS: So, now what?
SAMI: Follow me. Bring the trash can.
Lucas and Kate picked up the trash can and followed Sami.
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Theresa was sitting in a circle with a bunch of people she didn't know. It was her first meeting. Or, at least, the first meeting she'd willingly gone to. She looked down at the floor, not wanting to look anyone in the eye. The leader of the meeting was going around the circle, asking people if they wanted to share. Eventually, he came around the Theresa.
THERESA (voice trembling): I...I don't really know what to say.
LEADER: That's okay. You don't have to say anything if you don't want to. It's not mandatory. But, if you do choose to share something, there'll be no judgements. We're all here for similar reasons. We're all the in the same boat. We'll understand either way.
THERESA: My name's Ther...
Theresa let out a sob. She took a deep breath.
THERESA: My name is Jeannie...and I'm a heroin addict.
LEADER: Hi, Jeannie. I'm Dave.
THERSA: I just don't understand how I got so messed up, you know? I don't understand why I started it all. But the first time I did...it felt like heaven. I felt like I was flying. Like nothing could bring me down. And every time after that, I tried to capture the same feeling. It was like swinging from a chandelier. It felt great at first, but then I suddenly realized that there was n long way down, so I closed my eyes and refused to let go. Then, eventually...I had to. When the first comedown hit me, I felt like hell. (voice breaking) And I don't want to feel that way anymore. I hate myself for what I turned into. I just want to be okay again.
MAISON BLANCHE
Rex sat at the computer, typing. A moment later, he got up and went into the other room, where Chad, André, Cassie and E.J. were waiting.
REX: We were in for all of four minutes. They noticed us after three and a half and set up a firewall.
E.J.: You can get us back in, though?
REX: Of course, but it will take time to get passed the firewall's defenses.
André got up.
ANDRE: The most important thing is that dear Rex here has proven that he can, in fact, do it. Before we continue our campaign, we must first create the video. We have to show the good people of Salem who they're dealing with.
Suddenly, there was a loud buzzing noise.
CASSIE: What's that?
REX: A helicopter. While I was hacking into Salem's major television networks, I was simultaneously looking at a complete detailed schematic of Maison Blanche. It was recently rebuilt and a helipad was added on.
CHAD: Wait a minute, you were looking at the blueprints for this building and hacking into all the television networks in Salem at the same time? How?
REX: Yes, it's called multitasking, Chad. You should give it a try sometime.
CHAD: Hey, I can multitask, just not that good.
REX: What is it like in that puny head of yours? It must be so boring.
ANDRE: Children, play nicely. You all need to be on your best behavior. Follow me.
All five members of the prism stood up and walked through Maison Blanche.
ANDRE: The sound of a helicopter here can only mean one thing.
CASSIE: What could it mean?
ANDRE: He has returned.
