Jack and Sara sat together on the couch,he had one arm around her and with the other he held her hand . Ben was telling them that the marines were involved and the search was to begin within the next few days. They were sure that he had moved since Angela's visit. Jack asked Sara if she wanted a drink and they all decided they needed one. Jack walked to the bar and Dean followed him. " Jack..did you ever give her the ring? " Jack was pouring drinks and with a sad smile he said , " Yes..she accepted. But we were planning on waiting a few weeks before announcing it. Did you tell Angela yet? " Dean shook his head , " I figured Sara would want to do that. "Good , Please don't say anything yet. " Dean placed his hand on Jack's shoulder, " Ok..Congratulations Jack." Jack looked down into the glass , " Thanks."



Ben sat on the coffee table facing Sara and taking her hand in his, " I am not going to stop until I can get him back to you." She nodded and took a shuttering breath , " I know..Thank you. " Pulling her hand from his she continued , " Whose body did I bury then Ben? " He raised his hand and wiped her tears, not noticing Jack standing beside them. " I don't know Baby..but I am going to find out. " Jack sat down next her and handed her a drink. " Here , drink this. " Jack shot Ben a look,"What's our next move? " Sara swallowed her brandy , " I am going there, I have to be there for him. " Jack nodded , "Of course I will get us the first flight out." She turned and gave a thankful smile. Ben cleared his throat , " Don't bother. you ..no all of us are on the 'no fly' list. they wont let us over there. " Sara gasped , " They can't do that!" Jack put his arm around her , " Don't worry if you want to be there we will find a way. " Then looking to Angela he said," i think she has enough for one night..I think we all have. I suggest we pick this up in the morning. " Jack walked them to the door but Ben hung back walking over to Sara as she went back to the balcony. He turned her around and took her in his arms. Jack came back and saw him whispering to her, then lean down and kissed her cheek. Ben pulled back and touched her face. He walked toward Jack who followed him to the door. As Ben stepped out to join Dean and Angela who were waiting for the elevator Jack stopped him. " From now on..you keep your hands to yourself, there is no more touching or caressing and definitely no more kissing. We understand each other? " and with that Jack closed the door.Dean hid a smile , thinking that he was proud of Jack. " Did you see it? " Ben asked. " See what" Angela asked, knowing as Sara had told her and showed her the ring, telling her how happy she was about it, but now nothing would come before bringing Robert home. " The ring on her finger. They are engaged. " he said as he entered the elevator.

Jack and seen to Sara , getting her into bed before he set about closing the lights and locking up for the night . Today was very eventful to say the least. What will it be like to have a grown son , he wondered. Will he even want a relationship with Jack? Then there were other children. He would have to tell them all about Robert. That will have to wait , tonight he needed to take care of her. She was still awake when he came into bed. " You still up ? " as he climbed into bed. " yes..I don't ever want to go to sleep without you next to me if I can avoid it. " he held her in his arms for along time kissing her and whispering in the darkness. They were both starting to drift off so Sara swiveled around and put her back to him and he snuggled next her his arm draped over her waist. She took that arm and wrapped her arm around it and holding it as if it were a teddy bear. " I love you, " He whispered in her ear.And she whispered back , " I love you too. " Thoughts of seeing and holding her son once again played in her mind like a movie as she drifted off to sleep, safe in Jack's arms.

Sara was up early , roaming the penthouse , then weeping silently on the couch. He watched her as she cried, he would do anything to take the pain away for her. He went to the kitchen and brought out a tray of coffee and toast. By the time he came out she was asleep again , curled into a ball on the couch. He sat next to her smoothing her hair out of her face. He sighed and started to get up and she stopped him. "Please don't go." she said softly. " I am never going to go again. You and I are team , Sara. You are my partner ,my friend and my lover . You are everything to me, I just want you to know that. " Sara sighed and closed her eyes, " Ditto..come lay with me." He laid beside her arms wrapped around her. " Everything is going to be all right..you'll see." Sara nodded , " I know..because whatever happens..we are together and we can tackle anything. With my brains.." Jack smiled , she was so strong , he knew that was his que to tease her. " Hold it..hold it..YOUR brains.." Sara smiled eyes still closed. "Jack..you know my GPA was higher..."



Sara felt more like herself after her shower and she found Jack in the living room with Dean and Angela. " I just wanted to say..congratulations Jack. I am very happy for both of you." Jack turned and gave Dean a look. " Don't look at me Sara told her. " Sara entered the room and the conversation, " i was still wearing my ring, " Angela laughed, " Yea..it was kind of hard not to notice it... Damn Jack. " He smiled a bit embarrassed. Sara added , " We aren't going to announce it yet," Sara gave a slight gasp, " Do you think Ben noticed it?" Dean and his wife exchanged glances, " Ahh , yeah..he noticed." Sara looked down, " That wasn't how I wanted it..I wanted to tell him..not have him stumble on to it." Sara looked over to Jack who was trying to hide a small smile. "Jack ! " Jack looked at her innocently, " What ?" She shook her head at him. He knew she would not berate him or try to make him feel guilty, she was not like that, whether she agreed or not it was his gut reaction and she would not judge him. " Well , " he said , " Let's eat something we have to head out to the airport. " Sara looked up to him , " Where are we going? " Jack cocked an eyebrow and smirked , " Washington"



The foursome's first stop was the office of Senator Jacobs. He was newly elected and was fighting to bring back the troops from Afghanistan . He agreed happily to help them in whatever way possible , in exchange for them mentioning his help in the Times. Their second stop was at the office of a four star Marine General. " I am sorry..it is against policy to allow family members into a war zone..under any circumstances. " Sara was full of fire, " We are journalists, all four of us. Mr & Mrs Michaels and myself have been there numerous times already. " The General shook his head. " I am sorry Miss Jamison , I am aware of how much you have done for our boys over there, but you and I both know you would not be going there as a journalist. You would be going over their as a mother and I cannot allow that. Now we have already sent a unit in and it is just a matter of time before we find them. Mrs Michaels has provided us with her contacts , who have been cooperating. Everything that can be done is being done. " Jack spoke now, " You will keep us up dated daily." The general sighed , " Mr Deveraux, I can't give members of the press classified information. " Jack leaned forward , " You just said we aren't acting as journalists but as parents. You want us to start acting like members of the press? If you will not allow us to go there, you WILL keep us updated daily or I promise you General I will bring down the full weight of one of the most prestigious newspapers in the country onto not only your office but the Marine Corp as well. I will put out editorial after editorial about the cover ups of the military. The choice is yours General. My only concern at the moment is getting our son home as quickly as possible and I don't care who I have to ruin to do." The General reluctantly agreed to Jack's demands. When the got outside Sara stopped suddenly and the rest followed suit. All turned and looked at her. " You were totally amazing in there Jack. " Dean and Angela turned to him as well. " I have to admit it Jackie, I was very impressed . " Angela said with a smirk. Dean added , " Hell I was ready to tell you whatever you wanted to know and I don't know anything. " Sara walked over to him and grabbed his tie , pulling him down to her , " My fiance is truly amazing isn't he. " Jack smiled, " I believe you are greatly exaggerating ." Sara shook her head slowly , then whispered in his ear. " It was totally hot. So hot in fact...that when we get on the plane..I just might make us members of the mile high club. " Then she kissed him passionately. Jack looked into her eyes , and sighed . " Well..what are we waiting for ? Let's get to the airport shall we? "

chapters 17-18


Jack had called Jennifer the day after they got the news about Robert.He told her there were things he needed to discuss with her and if she could please accompany Abby to NY and he would meet them at Columbia to help get her settled in and then he and Jennifer can go somewhere to talk.On the plane ride back Jack told Abigail he would meet her for dinner and she could give him a tour. Jennifer was going to go shopping to pick up some things for their daughter and he arranged to meet her an hour before he was to meet Abby. Jack and Sara were a bit disappointed that they did not join the mile high club...this time. But the desire was there still waiting to be released. When they entered the penthouse elevator Sara knew they would not be disturbed and she turned to jack pushing him up against the wall . "I want you Jack.." she said kissing him and biting his ear. " Well..your wish is my.." He never finished his sentence. Sara had covered his mouth with hers . Jack lifted Sara's skirt and ripped off her underwear. She was already undoing his belt and unzipping his pants. Jack lifted her into his arms and her legs wrapped around his waist. He turned and pressed her up against the wall and entered her. Sara gasped , " Oh ..Yes ..Jack.." Jack moaned " Oh god ...Sara" Jack had never felt this free ,sexually, since his youth. It was amazing, his want for her never abated. The bell rang and the doors opened to the penthouse hallway. Jack and Sara were just on the edge, he carried her out of the elevator and into the hallway. Both gasping for air, moaning and calling each others name. They hit the wall , pushing harder..faster ..and with a final moan from both , the went over the edge. They held to one another trying to breath. "That was incredible...you are incredible Jack. " He laughed , " So..is that why you agreed to marry me..huh..for the sex. " Now she laughed . " Well that is part of it. This huge diamond ring is another. Oh yea and the fact that I have never truly loved anyone the way I love you." Jack pulled his face from her neck , " And I you.. with all of my heart I love you Sara.You have freed me in so many ways " They laughed as Jack carried her through the door.." Hey..this is good practice for carrying me over the threshold."



They had been so engrossed in each other they had not noticed the figure hidden sitting on the bench in the alcove. Jennifer sat alone , hand over her mouth crying. She slipped into the stairway ran down the steps to the next floor. Taking the elevator out of the building. She stopped and let out a cry filled with hurt. It was not enough to hear the man she loved making love to another woman and professing his love, but to hear that he had asked her to marry him was more than she could take. Was that it then? Was that why he wanted to speak to her? She had foolishly thought the developments he spoke of were that he no longer wished to be with Sara . She had hoped he was to say he was coming home..to her. That was not going to happen. He was completely in love with Sara and not her.





Jack reluctantly left Sara. He was going to meet Jennifer at a coffee house near the Columbia campus. She was waiting for him. Her eyes red and swollen. Jack assumed that she was upset about leaving Abigail. " Hey Jennifer..you alright? " She nodded, " Yes." she said in a small voice. " Look I don't want you to worry about Abigail. I am 15 mins from her..I will check on her regularly..you know that. " Again she nodded. "Jennifer I need to speak to you about something. " He told her all about what Angela had found , what happened to her and how the prisoner was his son. " Oh my gosh Jack ! That's unbelievable. I hope they find him and he is alright. You can finally get to know him. " Jack nodded, " Yes ..another second chance. " he said under his breath. " I am going to have to tell the children about him. Prepare them .. I am going to talk to Abigail tonight. " Jennifer asked if he wanted her to be there for it. " No..I think it best if I do this myself. " Jack paused a minute, thinking. Yes ..he better tell her the rest now as well..get over with..like pulling off a band-aid. " Jennifer..there is something more..I have asked Sara to marry me...she excepted..first try. " Jennifer's heart broke. " Jack..I had wanted to say yes..but" Jack waived his hand , " Jennifer there is no need..really . That was insensitive of me to say and I apologize. We are not going to announce it officially until we get Robert back. I am not telling the children yet either. I just wanted you to know. " Jennifer could not hold back the flood of tears . Jack felt terrible for her pain..but it could not be avoided. He had to tell her. " Jennifer ..I am sorry this hurts..really I am. " Jennifer looked into his eyes, " I am happy for you Jack..excuse me..please. " Jack stood up. " No Jack..it's ok..I just need to be alone for a while." Then she was gone.


Jack met Abby and she gave a tour of her room and dorm house. They walked a few blocks to a local restaurant. " Oh Daddy , I am so excited ! I am going to work really hard I promise. Thank you so much . " Jack watched her as she gushed about her roommate, her classes and New York in general. " I am glad you are happy. Sweetheart there is something I need to speak to you about something. " Abby got a concerned look on her face, " What is it Dad? " Jack took a deep breath. " You know that Sara and I dated all through college and a bit afterward. What you don't know and what I myself found out months ago. was that ..When I walked away from her..well she was pregnant." Abby's eyes went wide, " What? Dad you have a child with Sara? I have another brother or sister?" Jack blew out a breath. " Yes. " Jack went on to tell as much of the story as he could to her. How Harper threatened her and that was why he left her, thinking it was "best for her . " He told his daughter how he was afraid for her and his friends, afraid of how Harper might ruin their lives before they even got started. Abby listened as her father told her of how Sara was scared that Harper with his money and connections would try and take her child from her.Abby's eyes welled up when he told her how he had been killed, " But it appears that he is in fact alive. It was a lot for her to hear all at once but time was of the essence. " Does Mom know about all this? " Jack took her hand, " Yes , are you ok?" Abby looked down , " I don't know ..How should I be. I just found out I am not your first born and I have an older brother. I need some time to process all this ."



Sara and Ben sat at the diner drinking coffee and eating fries." I had wanted to tell you myself. I am sorry you found out the way you did. " He looked down into his cup. " Yeah , me too. Sara aren't you rushing into this ? " Sara shook her head , " No..I don't. Look I don't want to debate my decisions with you, I just wanted you to know that I was going to tell you. Jack and aren't announcing it yet, our main concerns right now is getting Robbie home. " He took her hand, " You look tired , are you sleeping? " Sara pulled her hand back and wiped her eye. " Not really , how can I ? I am going to find out how this happened, I promise you that. I just want him back home, safe. I can't even imagine what he has been going through all these years." Ben just wanted to wrap his arms around her , " I am here for you and I am and will do whatever I can. " Sara gave him a small smile, " I know..thank you , it means a lot to me and Jack ." There it was again.."me and Jack", he wasn't sure if he actually hated Jack or that he was now living HIS life. The life Ben should have..with her. " I love you Sara and that will not just go away and neither will I ."



Jennifer paced her room. She had gotten a phone call from Ben and he met her in the bar of her hotel. They had talked about what a mistake Jack and Sara were making and how they were rushing into something that they would all regret. Truth was both Ben and Jennifer , having had a few drinks each were feeling sorry for themselves. " Look Jennifer, you have to talk to him. everyone could see that during that whole Alamain incident he was worried sick about you. He loves you . They are just trying to relive the past because we hurt them and they can't get over it. We need to show them that we can move on from the mistakes we made and be happy again. " Ben knew he was reaching, and he felt guilty for what he was doing but the scotch he had been downing helped to ease those feelings. For Jennifer the wine was making her head swim and she agreed with him willingly. And so she found herself waiting for Jack to show up after calling him and telling him she needed to see him right away. Jennifer wore the white nightgown that Jack had always loved. She was no longer feeling the effects of the wine and only had one thing on her mind. When he arrived he could tell immediately she had been crying. Jack wanted to know why he had been summoned there. " Jack do you remember when I was at the villa? You told me that nobody is ever gonna love me the way that you do. Well now I am telling you that. She will never love you like I do. We belong together, I know I hurt you but we CAN get past it. I know you still love me..you have said as much , just let go. Do you still want me Jack? I know I want you." Jack knew that Jennifer meant to seduce him , just like she had done many times in the past. She advanced on him, " Jennifer ..don't. Please ..." She grabbed him kissing him hard and pressing herself to him. Jack pushed her away and she was shocked. There was no hesitation, before he would kiss her back then pull away. " Jennifer , listen to me now, there will be no more of this. I will always love and care about you, but I am not in love with you . Sara is the only woman I want, please..try to understand. You have to accept that things are different now. I have moved on..I want a life with her now..I am going to marry her. I don't mean to be cruel but I don't know how else I can get through to you. Go back to Salem..get on with your life. " As he was leaving she told him, " He wont give up you know..Ben..he is going to try and get her back." Jack turned and looked at her , " What? How do you know that? " She started crying..she told Jack all about her meeting with Ben. " Thank you for telling me that ." and he walked out the door. When the door closed she finally knew in her heart he was gone from her now. he would never belong to her again.



Jack and Sara had told each other what each had gone through that day as they laid in bed. " So Abby took it fairly well..but do you think Jennifer will finally except it now? " Jack sighed " I think so ..yes. What are we going to do about Agent Todd? Sara ..I will not let him come between us. " Sara looked into his eyes , " He can't hurt us Jack . Are you sure? About us? It's not too late..if you want to.." He kissed her long and filled with love and passion. " I am sure...I want to spend every minute of the rest of my life with you"



Sara roamed the house again after Jack fell asleep. She had not slept since she found out about Robbie and she doubted that she will until his return.Sara had not told Jack about her insomnia, she knew he would only worry. She stood on the balcony wrapped in a blanket looking up at the night sky. Now she had to worry about Jennifer and Ben trying to ruin their happiness. So many thoughts rattled around her head she did not see him watching her. Jack stood by the door his heart aching for her. " Another sleepless night? " She jumped, " You know? Of course you do." He wrapped himself around her, " I know you are not eating either. Please Sara..I can not handle any of this if you get sick..you must eat and you must sleep." She nodded, " I will try..that's the best I can do right now. " He lifted her in his arms , " Come lay with me." and he carried her to bed.

chapters 19-20



Sara sat at the table playing with her food. She was exhausted but would not admit it. She barely finished the article on her interview with the Governor. Jack watched her closely. She had not slept a full night in days and barely ate anything but drank coffee all day. He was worried about her but he knew her well enough to know that nagging her about it would only make it worse. " I am going to meet Angie later." Jack was relieved she would be getting out a bit hoping the fresh air would do her good. The phone rang and Sara jumped, Jack answered it . The General's office was on the phone. " Yes..I see..well how long before they get there?..Well that is promising. ..Oh..yes I understand..thank you. " Sara was standing next to him now, " What ? Did they find him? " Jack told her how that when they got there the camp was abandoned. They had intel that they are about 150 miles west of there and would be arriving there sometime this evening. They would call as soon as they heard anything. " I just want him back..." He held her close, " I know ..I know I do too. We will get him back Sara.."





Sara sat in the coffee shop waiting for Angela. Her emotions raw. Then she saw her. Ordering at the counter , suitcase at her feet. Jennifer didn't see Sara there, but that would soon change. " Jennifer" She turned around, looking at Sara. " Hello Sara. " Sara stood staring at her , " You leaving already? Sure you don't want to try and seduce Jack one more time? .." Jennifer's mouth dropped. He had told her ..she could not believe it and Sara saw that on Jennifer's face. "Surprised ? Jack and I don't keep things from each other . Look this is going to stop now..do you understand me? No more! We have to be civil and at least play nice for the kids, but I know you aren't the saint you pretend to be..and now Jack knows it as well. I am sorry that Ben might have manipulated you into last nights events , I will be speaking to him about that I assure you." Jennifer gave a sick little smirk. " He didn't manipulate me into anything. I did what I thought I had to do, but obviously your hold on him is much stronger than I have thought. Talk about manipulation ? You are dangling your son in his face . Using the promise of getting to know him to hold on to him." Now Jennifer just let loose, not even sure if she believed what she was saying or just trying to hurt Sara anyway she could. " Maybe this is all a big lie , maybe you know that isn't your son and you are just playing on his emotions. Then you can play the dead son card again. " Something inside Sara snapped..whether it was lack of sleep or stress she knew not. Sara knew that Jennifer didn't mean what she said , that she just wanted to hurt her. But it shoved her over the edge just the same, She slapped Jennifer so hard the force almost spun her around. Jennifer stood holding her cheek .The two woman stood staring at each other then Sara laughed. " You know what? I know you don't really mean that. It's just your pathetic way to try and justify why Jack chose to be with me. He did CHOOSE me. I walked away and he came to me..and that is something you just can't except. That and the fact that he had a life before you..not the crap he called a life after us. But he was genuinely happy and in love with me..no with SOMEONE other than you. And as far as OUR son is concerned that is something else you can't swallow can you?Tell me is it that you aren't the only one to have his child or is it that you weren't the first ? " Just then Angela came in . " What the hell is going on here ? " Jennifer and Sara were looking at each other. Jennifer said , " Nothing..nothing at all. " Sara added, " That's right nothing." Sara turned and walked out . Angela turned to Jennifer , " I am sorry that you are hurting Jennifer...really I am. But you need to stop this before you ruin your relationship with Jack altogether . That being said , if you say or do anything to hurt her again....you will answer to me. "



Jack held Sara in his arms, kissing her on the head. He could not even bring himself to call Jennifer and tell her what he thought of her encounter with Sara. She had left several messages on his phone trying to explain herself, but they went unanswered. His only concern for her. He had gotten her to take a mild sedative and was sleeping quietly. Then the phone rang and she woke with a start, Jack looked at the caller ID then to Sara.." It's Washington.."


The young man sat on the floor of his cell just before the sun came up. He was sleeping..dreaming of times that felt so long ago that he wondered if they were real memories or just dreams. The sound of rapid gunfire jolted him awake. It was too early he thought for them to be going through practice drills. Then he heard the yelling and the frenzied sounds of men scrambling about. He heard bombs go off and then he heard it...the most wonderful sound in the world...English! He yelled at the top of his lungs praying someone..anyone would hear him. One of the terrorist came ..screaming at him..then he pointed his gun at him. It was over he though he was so close to getting out and he was going to die within reach of freedom. The faces of the ones he loved danced before him like a slide show. The final face..his father. Did he even know yet that he existed , or would he die and his own father would not even know . He had not known of his birth now he would not know he had died. He had never blamed him..it was a life choice his mother had made. His mother had she moved past, having grieved for him already..or was she still looking for him.No he was sure she was still searching, she was the strongest person he had ever known. Stubborn and determined , he was sure that's where he had gotten those traits from. He squeezed his eyes closed focusing on the faces in his mind waiting for the shot that would end this once and for all. The shots rang out but there was no pain , no silence . He opened his eyes and there before him were two Marines. " Are you Lance Corporal Robert Jamison? " He swallowed , " Sir yes sir ! " he shouted. " Come on marine..lets get you the hell out of here. " Finally he was Robert Jamison once more.



"It's Washington. " Jack said as he picked up the phone. Sara stood holding her breath, silently praying. " Hello..yes..." She watched as he squeezed his eyes closed . " Jack..Jack..did they find him? " Jack blew out a long breath , " Thank you..thank you so much, " Jack hung up the phone his eyes glistening with tears. " They have him..he's alive. Our son is coming home. " Sara burst into tears. " Oh god ...Oh god " He pulled her to him . holding her as she let the tears flow until there was no more. His own tears streamed silently. They shed for her and her pain and relief. The shed for the son he was yet to know ,and the ordeal he had endured all these years. They shed for himself and for the joy of getting a second chance at meeting and getting to know his grown son. Sara called Dean and Angela who cried along with her . They were to meet for breakfast. When she hung up she threw herself into his arms. They laid on the couch kissing and wrapped around each other. " How do you think he will react? Do you think ..." The phone rang again. Sara answered it on the third ring , " Hello....Hello? "



What would he say when she answered he wondered. The second he heard her voice his eyes welled up. He held his breath as she said hello a second time , choking back the overwhelming urge to sob. he had been so close to her. It had always been the two of them..a team. He took his hand from his mouth and tried to speak. It came out then, the only word he could say, " Mom."



" Oh..Oh my god..Robbie..Robbie ! " Jack watched her hand over her mouth as she fell into the couch and cried. He thought how much he loved her and he would never..could never leave her again.

chapters 21-22


Robert and his mother cried for a while telling one another how much they loved each other and missed one another. Robert had been told how he had been declared dead. A body brought back , burnt beyond recognition so the casket had remained closed. They told him how his mother had refused to believe it at first . He was in the hospital , being checked out and after his release he was headed to be debriefed. " Are you alright? How do you feel? " she asked him. " With my hands...seriously, I am ok. I am dehydrated and a bit thin but otherwise ok. " Sara knew her son, even after all these years. She knew he was glossing over his condition but she was not about to call him on it. To his credit , he knew his mother just as well. He knew that she was aware of what he was doing but would let it go...for now. "Before you even ask..I can't discuss anything about what happened until after my debriefing. How is uncle Dean and Aunt Angie? " She told him they were the same and that they were overjoyed and couldn't wait to see him. " And Ben ? Again she told him that he was well . "Mom? The General's aide said something to me..well.. he said that my father ..for lack of a better word , bullied the General. I had told him that Agent Todd was not my father and he said that he didn't know who that was. So..who was it..Uncle Dean? " Sara took a deep breath and looked into Jack's eyes. " No..no honey. It was your FATHER. " The crease between Jack's eyes appeared. Sara gave him a small smile. " My Father..my real FATHER. You mean Jack Deveraux..he IS my father..isn't he ? " Sara took a deep breath, how deep his voice was she thought." I know now ..that you have known for a long time that Jack was your father. " Robert tried to still his heart , " So he WAS there then... in Washington. Well..how did he take it? " Sara's eyes never left Jack. " He was very upset..that I didn't tell him, that he could never know you, but then ..when he calmed down , he wanted to know everything about you. " Robert blew out breath. " So he wants to meet me? " She could hear the hope in his voice. She saw now with such clarity the need even now at his age , to know his father. While he never wanted for male influence in his life , she knew now that it was not enough..he wanted the love of HIS father. "Oh..sweetie..yes..yes of course he does.. " Jack's own heart he was racing...did Robert think he didn't want to know him ? Did believe that Jack chose not to acknowledge him ? No..no Sara would never had let him think that..no matter what..he knew she would never let their son think that. " Robert..you have to know that this is all on me. You father ..you know I never told him..for many reasons..but had he known about you..nothing would have kept him from being part of your life." Robert sighed. He was getting tired but did not want to stop listening to the sound of his mother's voice. He felt like a child. He would make her talk to him until he fell asleep. "Will I see him when I get home? " Jack watched as her smile broadened , " Yes ..he will be there..Jack and I are together now. He lives here..in New York with me.."His eyes were getting heavy, " That's great Mom..I know how happy you must be. And Ben..how is he taking it? " Sara thought for a moment , " You know Ben..how do you think?" There was silence for a moment , then a male voice, speaking softly came on the phone. " Hello?...I am afraid he fell asleep , he's suffering from exhaustion." Sara closed her eyes. " Yes of course. Please ask him to call me again tomorrow."





Jack waited for her to collect herself. She held the phone to her chest then to her lips, finally hanging up . " He fell asleep." she said softly. " How is he? Physically is he going to be alright? " Sara told him what Robbie had said. She told him there was probably more..but she believed that he was ok. Jack debated but then he asked , " He asked about me? Does he not want to see me? " Sara let out a small laugh.." How much alike you both are. He thought you might not want to see him. Yes..Jack he wants to see you..very much so. He has waited a long time . I think you are going to be the best homecoming gift in the world. " Jack let out a shuttering breath, and when he closed his eyes a tear slid down his cheek. " I hope he is not disappointed." Sara shook her head,"There is no way he could ever be disappointed , ten minutes with you..and he will know what an amazing man his father is. " Jack smiled , " YOU are biased. " Sara nodded, "Damn right I am. " Jack looked her up and down. There was not one thing about her he didn't love about her. He had only to look in her eyes and he was again filled with confidence. How had he lived for so long in self doubt? One look from her renewed his sense of self. He would meet Robert and he was confident that they could build a good relationship..in time, that was something he knew that they had plenty of now..time..all the time in the world. He knew she herself was exhausted and he wanted her to get some sleep. She would be able to sleep once more. " You need to get some sleep." Sara shook her head slowly. Jack was stretched out on the couch and crawling over the length of that long, lean body she loved so much she reached his face. Her body pressed onto his. " There is only one thing I need right now.....you. I need you." She kissed him with great passion. Jack sighed deeply. " Sara...I love you so much. I need you too." He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her with such love and desire that tears formed in her eye. Then they made love.



Sara woke eager to face the day. Her son would call again and JJ was coming again early. Jack had arranged it , wanting to talk to him about Robert. She looked over at him sleeping so peacefully , he still looked like a little boy when he slept. Her heart felt like it might burst. Jack Deveraux was now and always would be the love of her life . She eased herself out from under his arm and went inside to make coffee. She came back with a tray of toast and jelly and coffee and juice. she removed her night clothes and slid into bed. She lifted his shirt and pressed her bare body to his chest, The feel of her skin on his made him smile. His hands began running up and down her. " Mmmm Good morning to me. " Jack whispered. Sara removed his tee shirt and boxers , pushing him softly down onto his back . She climbed on top of him. She trailed kisses from his stomach up to his ear and whispered , " I intend on personally making sure it is a VERY good morning to you."



Two hours later they were laughing and eating breakfast with Dean and Angela. Jack was getting another cup of coffee when the phone rang and he answered it " Hello..Jack Deveraux speaking.." There was a brief moment of silence and then a young , deep voice answered, " Hello... This is Robert Jamison calling." Jack sucked in air and rested his hand on the counter for support. " Robert.." he whispered , he didn't know if he should speak to him or pass the phone to Sara. He decided to talk to him. " How...how are feeling today?. " The young man smiled he could hear the nervousness in Jack's voice. " I am felling better..I am going to be released later today. " Jack swallowed , " Well that's great..you will be getting debriefed today then ? " Robert had so many things he wanted to say to him..to ask him , but that could wait. " Well I will be transported to Washington first. then they will speak to me tomorrow..home after that. " Jack's heart raced. The threesome watched him closely . Sara was thrilled for both the men in her life, this is only the beginning she thought to herself. " So home in two days..that's wonderful news. Well then..your mother is standing here with her hand out so she either wants the phone or money.." before Jack could finish his sentence Robert replied " Or both," Jack smiled brightly. " I am looking forward to meeting you " Robert said quickly. Jack closed his eyes, " As am I..more than you could possibly know. I will see you soon. " he passed the phone to a waiting Sara. He was relieved to know that he wanted to meet him as much as he did.



Jack was going to run some errands before picking JJ up at the airport . He was heading out when he opened the door and found Ben there. " Jack..Sara home? " Jack stepped aside and followed him back into the house. The errands can wait, he thought. " Sara..how is he? ...I tried calling him at the hospital but they wouldn't let me speak to him. " Sara stood up , " He is fine..some minor problems but nothing life threatening thank god. " Ben exhaled, " When is coming home?" Sara looked at Jack quickly. " He should be home by weeks end. " Ben took her in his arms and hugged her. " I am so happy for you. " Sara pulled away. She sat back down and Ben sat down next to her. " Listen to me now. I know we are all excited about his return but, you all need to know that he is might not be the same person that left here. Aside from the fact that he is a grown man now. He has been through a lot for a long time..I am sure he is going to be told to get some sort of counseling or therapy. " Sara nodded and looked down , " Yes ...we know that. " Jack put his hand on her shoulder. " He will get whatever he needs, we will see to that." Ben took a deep breath. " Well when we go to meet him at the airport..." Jack's head spun to look at Ben and with a raised eyebrow he said, " WE..when WE go to the airport? " Ben didn't even take his eyes from Sara. " That's right Jack. I am going . " Sara looked at the others , then back to Ben. "I know how much he means to you and you know how he feels about you...but Ben I don't want to make this hard on him. It is going to be so emotional already and with seeing Jack for the first time..I don't want things to be too overwhelming for him. I will call you when we get home and you can come by then. " Ben shook his head " No..I will be there..Robbie will expect me to me there. " Jack spoke up again unable to keep quiet. " I am afraid I must insist you don't" Dean got up from his seat , fearing a confrontation. " You what? I don't give a damn what you INSIST on Jack. In fact I have more of a right to be there then you..maybe you should stay home. " Jack folded his arms in front of himself. " I am his father..try as you might that will never change. He wants to see me , he said so when I spoke with him earlier. It will make things uncomfortable for him and I will not allow that. " Ben stood up.." Who the hell do you think you are to tell me what to do?" Sara stepped between them " Ben..Please." he turned away from her. The to Jack, " You had better get going or you will be late." He nodded and bent down and kissed her. " I will be back shortly. Dean a moment please. " Jack and Dean stood by the door. " Pleas promise me ..you will not leave him here with her alone. I have a bad feeling. " Dean also had a bad feeling, " Sure Jack no problem " Jack gave a small smile and was on his way.



After dinner Jack was sitting with JJ on the couch. " Uh Oh you have on THAT face daddy. Am I in trouble? " Jack smiled, " Should you be? " JJ looked upward thinking , " No..no I don't think so. " Jack cleared his throat " Good..there is something I need to tell you. " Jack talked and JJ listened. Jack explained how , Sara and he knew each other when they were young. "I know in college..like Abby." He continued trying to explain it in a way the small child could understand. " Is Sara having a baby? Am I going to be a big brother? " he said excitedly. Jack shook his head explaining that Robert was older. "He was born before I even knew mommy , " Jack watched as a very mischievous smile spread on the little boy's face. Jack took his son's chin and turned his face toward him. " Tell me. " he said. " I was just thinking that means he is Abby's older brother too right? " Jack nodded. " It will be fun to watch her get bossed around for a change. " Can I go bake cookies with Sara now?" Jack nodded," Sure little man go ahead."He looked at Sara " That went well. " Sara shook her head at him, " He's eight years old Jack , he only sees the silver lining. "



Sara and JJ were making sugar cookies and JJ was decorating them. " Sara ..I guess you won't have time to play with me or bake cookies anymore huh? " Sara looked over to him. " Why do you think that ? " He shrugged his little shoulders. " Because you will be busy with Robert. " She stopped what she was doing , giving JJ her full attention. " Do you like doing things with me Jack ? " He only nodded. " Well Robbie being home won't change that. I will still be able to do all the things we do together. Besides..I look forward to spending time with you too. " The little boy smiled up at her brightly. "Good I am glad. Sara ? What should I call him? Daddy calls him Robert but you call him Robbie. " She told him it's the same for him." You know like Jack or JJ. " He thought about it for a minute. " Well I will ask him which one he likes better. Sara ? Do you think he will like me? " Sara leaned down to him so that they were face to face. " No...I KNOW he will love ..just like I do. " JJ jumped up and hugged her. Then he took her face in his hands , a move she had seen him do with jack and Abby and she was sure with Jennifer too. Jack had told her it was his way of showing great affection for the person. JJ touched his head to hers and stood there for a moment. Then he hopped down from the stool and ran out of the kitchen yelling, " Call me when they are done ok? " Sara's eyes welled up and she saw Jack in the doorway staring at her with a sweet smile on his lips. " Did you see?..Did you see what he did? " Jack came and took her in his arms. " What can I say..he has impeccable taste , just like his father. " He kissed her softly.

Jack was in the lobby getting his mail when the very attractive blonde from the third floor came in after her daily run. She was in her late thirties and a partner in a major law firm. " Hey Jack..How are you today? " Jack smiled , " Oh fine and how are you Crystal ? " They were making small talk when Dean came in. Jack introduced him and the woman barely took notice. " You know Jack you really have the most beautiful blue eyes. " Jack chuckled, " Well thank you. " Dean was shaking his head quickly and gesturing with his hands but Jack was ignoring him. " You know you should come running with me...it would be so much fun. We could go for coffee first..if that helps. " Jack shook his head , " Well I will keep that in mind. Should I decide to take up running. " The blonde moved closer and brushed past him to get to her mailbox. " You do that..I am sure you will have no problem keeping up with me. See you around Jack." He looked at Dean , " Tell me something..she was flirting with me right? Dean nodded then was pointing behind him. " What the hell is wrong with you? " Dean clapped his hand over his eyes. " He's trying to tell you that I am standing behind you." Jack jumped at the sound of Sara's voice. " Hey..sweetheart..." She glared at him, " Oh please ! " With that she stormed for the elevator. Angela was shaking her head at him, " You really can be an idiot sometimes Jack." Dean frowned at him , " I tried telling you. " Then he leaned in close " But ..she was soo worth it. "

After the dinner dishes were slammed into the dishwasher and the plans were set in case the call came in that Robbie would be arriving, Dean and Angela left. " Good luck" Dean whispered to Jack. It was an unseasonably warm evening and Sara stepped out onto the balcony. Jack came out and stood next to her. He sighed loudly and she rolled her eyes. " You are angry..seriously? " She turned and glared at him. " I am not mad..........you were flirting with her ! AND she knew your name which means you have been flirting with her for a while." Jack exhaled loudly. " It's harmless..." Sara laughed, " harmless flirting can lead to ..well not so harmless things. " Jack smiled , " You are quite beautiful when you are jealous you know that. " She looked him in the eyes " Oh shut up. " Jack shook his head , " You mean to tell me you don't flirt..everyone does. It's human nature. Not everyone acts on it. I will not be acting on it and I will not do it again...promise." Jack could see the tears on her lashes. " You really are upset about this. " Sara turned away and wiped her eyes. " Tell me Jack..am I going to have to dye my hair blonde? " Jack shook his head in disbelief. " Oh for...don't be ridiculous ! " Sara was breathing hard, " Well I know how much you love blondes . " Jack got angry, " Don't go there Sara ! " She spun around on him. " Why ? It's the truth isn't ? All the others after me were blondes. " Jack turned away. " Sara..stop it now. " But she couldn't ,her insecurities came pouring out. " No ! you find her attractive..and part of that is the blonde thing..you are partial to them. She is younger and successful and.." Jack whirled around. " Stop ! Yes I think she is attractive. I am a man..a younger attractive woman flirted with me and I found that amusing..which trust me I do not anymore. As for the blonde thing..maybe it was just that..you were the only brunette I have ever wanted." Sara turned away from him, " I know people flirt..I guess i just didn't like seeing you do it.. How would you feel? " Jack though about it.." I would be angry..like how I feel when i see you with Ben..or Phil from copy...or Jim from I.T. " Sara laughed, " Well Phil and Jim are hot. " Jack's eyes opened wide. " Excuse me ? " She only smiled. " Come here. " She stood firm. " No you come here. " He walked half the distance to her and stopped. How much did she love him that she could be that upset over this and escalate it to this degree ? He knew that answer , because he knew in his heart he would be acting the same way if the situation were reversed. She stared at him for a moment ,then moved closing the distance between them. She could not help herself. She was jealous and that was not ever going to change. " I am still mad at you." and she was. " yeah well ..I love you and I will never stop wanting you. " He took her in his arms forcefully.." Come Here." he kissed her hard and she kissed him back the same way. She pulled back and ripped his shirt open and unbuckled his pants. He ripped her shirt open too, tugging her pants down and throwing her down on the lounge chair he covered her with his body, kissing her fast and hard. Sara could barely breath she bit his ear and neck grabbing his hips and as he positioned himself she pulled him down hard into her. He moved harder and faster . She arched her back , driving him harder. They both moaned loudly. Holding tightly to one another , they released themselves.Both stayed wrapped around each other , gasping for air. " I am still mad you know. " Jack started to laugh, " I know..I can tell.. and I like it."

Jack was sleeping peacefully. Sara was not exactly mad but she was less than thrilled with him still. She decided to test her theory. She went to the closet coming out ten minutes later. He was still sleeping and she climbed back into bed. She rubbed herself up against his back. Jack smiled and rolled over on to his back. " Mmm..good morning .. " He reached out and pulled her close kissing her. He had a smile on his face as he opened his eyes. Sara was leaning over him. He looked into those big blue eyes and sighed. Something was wrong. He blinked back the sleep and focused his eyes. " What the .." He jumped back, rolling away and fell off the bed. Sara leaned over the side of the bed, long blonde hair cascaded off her shoulders. " You alright Jack. " Jack sat on the floor mouth open.." What have you done..to your hair..what have done? " She smiled brightly , " I dyed my hair for you. You know Gentlemen prefer blondes ....blondes have more fun..stuff like that." Jack stood staring at her. He jumped up and slammed the bathroom door closed. If he lied and said he liked it , he would be proving her point. The fact was ..he hated it. He had loved the color of her hair and how it made her eyes stand out more. He dressed and walked out to the living room. " I am going out to get bagels. " slamming the door shut. Sara started feeling badly. He was really upset. She had just wanted to see if she was right or not. Thirty minutes later his return was announced by another door slamming. Sara was sitting on the couch. " I guess the bagel store was busy huh? " Without looking at her he answered, "Don't worry..I didn't talk to anyone. " Sara looked down , she had not intended to make him angry...it was just a joke..sort of. " Jack..." she stood up and he stopped in his tracks. Without turning around he asked, " How long? " Her heart stopped beating for a moment. " What do mean? " He exhaled loudly. " How long until you can fix it..dye it back..whatever needs to be done? " She could not help herself. She had to hear it..she wanted him to say it ..needed him to say it out loud. " So you don't like it ? " He spun around to look her in the face. " Like it ? No..no Sara I don't like it. In fact I hate it. I love the way you look ..I love everything about you and would change nothing. I know how you don't like to be told what to do..but you do what you have to and get it reversed..as soon as possible. " Sara brought her hand up to her head and pulled the wig off her head. " There..it's fixed." He took the wig from her hand , looked at it and through it down on the couch. " That was not funny ..that was not funny at all. " Sara tried to hide a small smile. " It was kind of funny..well..when you fell out of bed..that was funny. The rest ..not so much." He stood looking at her through squinted eyes, " I do not wish to speak to you right now. " Sara frowned , " Jack.." He raised his hand up , " Ahhh.." Then turned away and headed to the kitchen, a small smile in place. How he loved to get her at her own game. Of course he knew it was a wig. Her hair didn't grow longer overnight. Yes ..he would get his revenge for a little while.



The call came mid morning telling them that Robbie would be arriving at four o'clock. Sara watched as he hung up the phone. " So..what did you Mom say? " Jack looked at her , " She was thrilled..at least from what I could make out in between sobs. She will call Steve and Adrienne for us. " Sara told him she felt badly about telling Ben he could not go. To Jack's dismay ..he had been feeling the same way. Sara called Ben , " Thank you Sara..I appreciate that..I am stuck on a stake out right now but..when I get out of here ..I will be right over. I might be able to make the airport. " Jack watched her all afternoon nervously fluttering around the house. They were to meet the others at the airport and Jack wanted to leave early afraid of traffic. He was so nervous himself he thought he might be sick. But as he watched her trying to put on some make up , her hands shaking , he felt his own unease drain from him. Jack felt strong and confident for her. Not trying to feel that way..but he actually felt it. That was her gift to him. " Ready to go? " She nodded but was frozen to her spot. He walked over to her and extended his hand to her. " Let's go get our son. " She took his hand and they left for the airport.



They sat in the coffee shop as they waited for the flight to be announced . The woman already had tears in their eyes and the men were not far behind. Then they heard the voice telling them that the plane landed and was coming in at gate 7. All four hearts began beating faster. " He's here..we are really going to see him." Sara grabbed Jack's hand. " I can't believe it !" Angela said through the tears. Dean hugged his wife. " I know.." he said. Jack's breathing was shallow. This was it he thought, he had seen the pictures , heard all the stories and even heard his voice. But now he will be standing right in front of him. Should he dare to hug him or only shake his hand. He did not know..but it would come to him in the moment. They rushed over to the gate as the passengers were exiting. They watched face after face but none looked familiar. " What if he isn't on there? " Jack rubbed her shoulders, " He will be..try and be patient just a bit more. " Then ..she saw him. A young MAN now. His brown hair cropped , stubble on his face in fatigues carrying a duffle bag. Sara's knees became weak. Her hands covered her mouth, " Oh..Robbie !! " She ran through the crowd . " Robbie!..Robbie!! " He turned to see her racing towards him, even from across the room Jack could see his son's face contort as he began to cry. " Mom!..Mom.." She jumped into his arms as he dropped his bag. He lifted her off the ground and they held to one another as if their lives depended on it."Oh honey...I have missed you so much..I love you ..I love you..Oh thank god! I cant believe you came back to us. " Robbie had tears streaming down his face. " I love you too..I cant even begin to tell you how much I missed you. " The three watched as the mother and son refused to let go. they could see them speaking to one another. They wanted to give them a few moments alone but Dean and Angela could wait no longer. They raced over to him as well. Only Jack hung back watching the scene play out as if in a movie with tears streaming down his face. Without releasing his hold on his mother , Robbie held his hand out to Dean and Angela circling them in his hold. The four of them stood in the middle of the room crying and laughing. Jack slowly approached them stopping short of them all. Robbie was crying and when he opened his eyes they landed on Jack. Jack swallowed hard and he started breathing heavy. He was crying..he could not stop if he had tried. He released his hold on them and Sara saw who he was staring at. He like his father did a reflex swallow. He walked towards Jack and it felt like everything around them froze. Jack's hand came up involuntarily. He touched the young man's hair, then his face , then rested his hand on his shoulder. " I am so glad your here. " Robbie said with tears rolling down his cheeks. Jack had matching tears streaming down. " Robert.." was all he could manage , he pulled the young man into an embrace one that Robert eagerly returned.

chapters 25-26

Jack and his son held onto one another for a long time. Not one of them had a dry eye. They slowly pulled back and stared at each other. Jack could not take his eyes off of Robbie. It was real , he was real and there before him. For his part Robbie was thrilled to realize that his father was truly going to be part of his life now. When he was a young boy, he had fantasized about his father finding out about him and coming to see him. He would say how much he wanted Robbie to be part of his life. Now here he was. He loved his mother with all his heart and they couldn't have been closer but there was always something missing.He of course had Dean all of his life and then Ben later on but there was a piece missing from inside himself. Looking into Jack's eyes he felt that he had finally found it. Then out of the corner of his eye he saw him. A lone figure..waiting patiently.



Ben watched as The kid who was now a man hugged Jack. Watching them together had made up Ben's mind. He was determined not to lose Robbie too. Then Robbie saw him. "Excuse me a minute, " he said to Jack. Then looking back to him as he walked away, " Hey..don't go anywhere..ok? " Jack wiped his eyes. " I am not going anywhere. " Sara came to him and he wrapped his arms around her. He watched as his parents stood looking into each others eyes , arms around one another. His PARENTS..how odd to say that. Robbie turned and faced Ben who took the remaining steps to reach him. He pulled Robbie into an embrace. " Hey..kid...You have no idea how good it is to see you." Robbie laughed, " Well I can imagine, I know how good it is to be seen. " Ben laughed also, " Still a smart ass. " Then as he pulled back, he placed his hand on Robbie's face, " How are you..really? " Robbie assured him that he was ok and they rejoined the others. Looking at his mother he said , " I would REALLY like to go home now." Sara hooked her arm around her son's , then turning to Jack, " You heard him, let's go home." Jack took her hand and then turned to Ben, " Will you be coming back with us? " Ben shook his head " No..I have to go back to work , but..I will come by later on, " Then looking to Sara and then back to Jack, " If that's all right. " Jack nodded , " Yes..provided Robert is up to it. " Ben agreed and turned to Robert who was talking with Dean and Angela. He hugged him again , then pulling back and looking him in the eyes told him. " I will be a bit later to see you..I missed you kid. " Robert smiled , " I missed you too G-man . " They all walked over to the waiting limo, " I was looking forward to a cab. " Jack looked at him seriously, " i could send this away and we could just take a cab if you prefer. " Robert stared at him a moment then looking to Sara he said, " Wow..I guess my sarcasm is a bit rusty. " She laughed , Oh not to worry, between your Aunt and your father , you will be in rare form my days end I am sure. " As they rode home Sara told Robbie that they lived in the penthouse but she had retained their old apartment. " I was hoping you will stay upstairs with us..at least for a few days..if you don't mind. " Robbie thought about it for a moment, " Well I guess I could sacrifice for a few days and stay in the penthouse. " Jack smiled, " Now see..THAT was much better , sarcasm wise I mean. Yes just being in Angela's aura of sarcasm has rubbed off on you already. " Robbie chuckled, " I don't know, seems it could be in the genes. " Angela pushed Jack's leg with her foot, " Watch it Deveraux." Jack wiped his leg off, "Please..Have you no respect ? This is an Armani , not a Kmart special like your husband wears. " Dean frowned , " Hey ! That was uncalled for. I will have you know this the Gap not Kmart..even I have standards." Robbie and Sara exchanged glances and he took her hand his. He sat back with his eyes closed , legs stretched out and a big smile on his face. With a large sigh he said, " It's great to be home."



Robbie was quite impressed with the penthouse and jack busied himself with ordering dinner. Ben had called and said he would be by in the morning as he could not leave work . Robbie was very tired and Dean and Angela decided to stay downstairs so they could come back up early. They all went to bed rather early as it had been a very emotional day. Sara was in with a big smile on her face. Jack climbed in and took her in his arms. " He is quite an amazing young man isn't he ? " Jack whispered to her. " That he is. He is so much like you Jack. " He sighed, " Well I definitely see some shared personality traits..form both of us. " But Sara was already sleeping , her sleepless nights having caught up with her. Jack kissed her head and closed his eyes.


Jack woke up at 2:30 am. He was thinking of that last piece of chocolate cake. He and Sara slept in one of two positions, Sara on her side and Jack up against her with his arm over her waist. The second as was the case this evening was Jack on his back and Sara with her arm and leg draped over him. He had to have that cake , he thought to himself. Sara had told him eating this late was not good for him and they had many debates about it. No...he had to have it. He eased his way out from underneath her. Jack turned and looked at her with a smile. She was very beautiful, he thought as he leaned over and placed a light kiss on her head. Jack made his way into the kitchen and found Robbie with his head in the refrigerator, a piece of chicken in his mouth and a beer in his hand. He looked up at Jack , " I was hungry. " he said. Jack smirked , " Same here , I couldn't stop thinking about that cake. " Robbie chuckled , " Yeah..well..uncle Dean ate it before he left. " Jack frowned, " Damn it !..I WILL be installing a padlock on that refrigerator . Not to worry..I will give a key to you. " Robbie peeked back around the door, "thanks..drumstick ? " Jack nodded , " I 'll have one of those as well. " Robbie handed him the chicken and a beer. They sat at the table and eat and talked about food. With his eyes closed robbie said, " Oh god..I missed food. Mom would flip out out if she saw us doing this. " Jack's eyes darted around, " Agreed...perhaps it would be best..." Robbie finished his sentence for him. " If we don't mention it ? My thoughts exactly.." They talked and ate for a while , discussing their favorite things to eat. Sara stood behind the kitchen door for a moment with a large smile on her face and tears in her eyes, happy for both of them and then she returned to bed. When they were done neither seemed to want to go to bed. Jack asked Robbie , " You want to go to bed you must be exhausted. " But Robbie , not wanting to leave Jack , " No..not really. But you go on ahead, you must be tired. " Jack also was not ready , he was enjoying the alone time with his son. " No..no I am wide awake. Would you like to watch TV ? " Robbie shook his head, " Hey..do you play chess? " Jack had a crooked smile on his face and with a raised eyebrow said. " As a matter of fact I do...would you like to play? " Robbie returned the look , " As a matter of fact I would. "



Jack and Robbie sat and drank beer and played chess. Robbie made his move. " I was sixteen when I figured out you were my father.I found out all I could about you. I wanted to get in contact ..but I had to respect her wishes. I want to know you..all about you.Jack looked into his eyes , " I will answer any and all your questions the best I can," believing he owed him that. "Tell me about you and Mom..in college." Jack looked at the board, " Very interesting..you play well. " Robbie smiled, "Mom taught me." Jack made his move. " Well you see..one night.." jack told him how they met..fell in love and how and why he left her. He told that she was probably right to do what she had done. " Things would have gotten ugly..with Harper. " Robbie took Jack's pawn. " I need to ask, about your first wife. The man I see and the man I have heard about..well that act doesn't seem to fit. " Jack studied the board. " I was lost after your mother. I was desperate , I had all this love for her and I wanted to find someone to give it to." He told Robbie how he met Kayla, about getting sick..all of it right up to that night. " Jack took Robbie's knight. " Nice move..what happened? " Robbie moved his rook. " Nobody has ever really asked me that before. Something inside me snapped. I had an overwhelming feelings of hurt and anger. I had tried to do everything right , I was patient and caring. I thought if Sara had loved me , how could Kayla not. I was wrong. She never loved me...afterward I was stunned at what I had done, was capable of doing. At first I just wanted revenge for all the hurt they had caused me..then I saw how I had hurt them..her. I was filled with self loathing. I shut down..refused to let anyone near close to me or get close to anyone. I was afraid of hurting them or of being hurt myself. I threw myself into the paper and shut out the world. I would never open myself up to that pain again. You can't lose what you don't have , right? " Jack had made his move. " Then you met Jennifer.." Robbie moved his bishop. Jack nodded , " Yes.." He told Robbie about their courtship , their adventures , their children..their life. He told him how they had loved and hurt each other over and over. " Then when Sara came back into my love..everything was different. I found myself again. I felt different ..not just about Jennifer, but myself as well. I had self worth , I didn't feel unworthy of love and respect. " Jack made his move. Robbie looked at him. " I am sorry you had so much pain in your life. Thank you for trusting me enough to share it with me. " Robbie told Jack all about growing up and how Dean was always there for him. He told Jack how Sara's father had refused to talk to her after he was born. Angry that she had the baby. His loss he mother would tell him. He told jack that after the near loss of his mother and Dean on 9/11 that he had decided he wanted to be a Marine. He told his father about the capture and the beatings. " Then little by little they left me alone..sometimes forgetting to feed me. The thoughts of my family saved me , kept me going. " Jack nodded saying he knew how that felt first hand too. " I thought of you too. The one thing i wanted i would never have. I wanted to know you..and have you know me..know that I was alive. All I had was that brief handshake. I wondered if you would even want to know me. Do you..want a relationship with me? " Jack looked him in the eyes, " I do..more than you could ever know. When Sara told me about you I was devastated. I felt loss ..I couldn't even understand. Not just for not having met you but not being able to ever know you. I was afraid you would not want to have me in your life. But you are so much like your mother... You and I ...we have a second chance. And I will thank god everyday for it." Robbie raised his beer to Jack, " To second chances ." Jack touched his bottle to his son's , " Second chances." Robbie looked down at the board. " Well too bad you don't have a second chance in this game..checkmate..Dad. " Jack looked at the board then up at his son..a smile spreading across his face, " Well played."
