Since I'm new to the board. HELLO EVERYONE! I'm not sure where to begin a new topic. My mum has been watching DOOL since the 1960s. Since when has every last character been ROMAN CATHOLIC she's asked me to ask? The Hortons were Congregationalists, Marlena Evans was a Roman Catholic according to my mother... so what gives? Marlena Evans' son Eric a ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIEST? It's ridiculous. I bet Deidre Hall thinks so too. Perhaps it's the influx of the new writer (Reilly?) or the introduction of the Brady bunch and they were all forced to convert! I'd be grateful if someone , moderator or poster could enlighten me. You'd think there wasn't a Protestant, Jew, or Muslim in all of Salem for that matter!

Welcome finocchio. I sadly don't have the answer to your question. I never pay too close of attention to the religion factor of the show. They take a lot of liberties with everything so most things I just believe they bend to fit to what they want it to do.

Welcome finocchio. I'm not sure when the Horton family changed from Protestant to Catholic. The Brady family was always Catholic.

Tom and Alice's daughter Marie was a nun for awhile . Marie is Nick's grandmother. I think the Bradys have always been portrayed as Irish Catholics so it wouldn't be that unusual for Roman and Marlena's son to be a priest.

Mike Horton was married to Dr. Robin (Jacobs?) who was Jewish; they moved to Israel. Their son was Jeremy, who was the jerk who ran the funky Fly Me airlines sham.

I think every soap is required to have at least one priest for storyline purposes (confession of bad guys, forbidden love, etc..) and you can't have priests if no one is Catholic. (Yes, I realize other religions have minsters, rabbis, and the like, but none of them are forbidden to marry.)
As for the actor's feelings, the only actor that I'm aware of that has strong religious convictions is Missy Reeves (Jennifer). After her affair with a costar, she seems to have found Jesus and gotten very preachy, IMO.

I was very young when the show started, but I remember Marie as a nun. I thought the Hortons were always Catholic.

Catholicism tends to be dominant on most soaps. I can only imagine it's because of priests who are entirely devoted to the church (no families) and so are apparently available 24/7 for confessions and such (in the soap world). Plus they are very ceremonial with traditional weddings, christenings, and funerals....you know, all the events that require a gathering of the whole town in order to reveal some juicy secret. Finally, despite the ceremony, Catholicism tends to be more relaxed on necessary soap "sins" like drinking and such. ;-)

Drinking isn't a sin unless it's done to such an excess that it leads to committing sins.

Oh I completely agree, but a lot of Protestant churches are scandalized by any drinking. I think it's ridiculous, but living in the South I have to deal with such judgment a lot. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

I know that. I guess I did not express myself as clearly as I should have. I meant that part of the reason I think there is a predominantly Catholic presence on soaps is that Catholicism does not consider drinking a sin while many Protestant churches (wrongly) believe that it is a sin to have even one drink. Plus, as a medieval historian who specializes in Church history, Catholics generally do not carry the "weight of sin" as heavily as many Protestants have been taught to do since the starkness of the Reformation.
That's all I meant. :-)
