Chapter 8 SALEM INN - HALLWAY Roman, E.J. and Sami walked down the hall. ROMAN: This is our staff wing. Anyone who works at the hotel lives here during our open season. Yours is the only bedroom that's heated, since you'll be the only ones here. E.J.: I see. Roman stopped and opened a door. The three went inside. BEDROOM The three walked in. ROMAN: This is where you'll be staying. There's a small room attached to yours for your son. E.J. went to see the small room, then came back. E.J.: Perfect. ROMAN: Should be roomy enough. And, if you need more space, you'll have the whole hotel to move around in. E.J. and Sami looked around the room. E.J.: Cozy. SAMI: Yes. ROMAN: Quite. E.J.: Has a sort of homey feel to it. OUTSIDE THE SALEM INN Roman had had to go assist a guest who was having trouble, so Bo had taken over the tour. They were now walking around the outside of the hotel. BO: This is our giant hedge maze. It's one of our main attractions. The walls are 40 feet high. SAMI: This is gorgeous! BO: I wouldn't go in there unless you've got at least an hour to spend walking around. It'll take about that long to find your way out. Next, they came up to a garage. Parked next to the DiMera's car was a large thing that looked like a truck. However, instead of wheels, it had caterpillar tracks. BO: This is our snow-going caterpillar tractor, we call it the SnowCat. You both can drive, right? E.J.: Yes. SAMI: Yes. BO: Excellent. You shouldn't have any trouble with it, then. SAMI: Mr. Brady? BO: Please, call me Bo. SAMI: Okay. Bo, when was the Salem Inn first built? BO: Well, construction started around 1907. The hotel was finished in 1909. They say that it's built on the site of a Native American burial ground. There's even rumors that they had to fight off a few attacks from Native Americans while they were building the hotel. E.J.: Native American burial ground, eh? How interesting.

It was funny to see Sami and Roman shake hands since they're father/daughter on the show.
I think the hedge maze is going to be important in the story, as well as the fact that their bedrooms are the only ones with heat. Thanks for showing us around the hotel Andre.

The hedge maze sounds interesting. I like learning the history of the grounds and the building.

Chapter 9 HALLWAY Bo, E.J. and Sami walked down a hallway, BO: Funnily enough, a decorator from Colorado refurbished this part of the hotel just last year. E.J.: Well, they did a brilliant job of it. SAMI: I'll say. GOLD ROOM The three walked in. BO: Welcome to the Gold Ballroom. SAMI: It's beautiful! BO: You can sit 300 in here, comfortably. SAMI: Boy, we could really have a party in here. BO: Not unless you brought your own supplies. We always clear all the alcohol out of here before closing. E.J.: We don't drink. Roman and Abe walked in. BO: Abe, good to see you. ABE: You too, Bo. ROMAN: Still giving them the tour, I see. BO: We were just about to finish up, ROMAN: E.J., Samantha, this is Abraham Carver, our head chef. Abe shook hands with E.J. and then Sami. E.J.: E.J. DiMera. This is my wife, Samantha. ABE: Hello, E.J. Hello, Samantha. SAMI: Hi. ABE: How do you like the hotel so far? SAMI: It's wonderful. Just then, Roman's secretary came in, holding Johnny's hand. SAMI: Hi, Johnny. SECRETARY: He came looking for you guys. E.J.: Tired of bombing the universe, son? Johnny nodded. BO: Abe, if you're ready, could you show Mrs. DiMera the kitchen. ABE: I'd be glad to. Right this way, Mrs. DiMera. Sami, with Johnny in hand followed Abe. KITCHEN Abe, Sami and Johnny walked in. SAMI: This is the kitchen? ABE: Yep, this is it. SAMI: It's huge! ABE: It sure is. But, it's still just a kitchen. Half of this stuff, you'll never even have to use. How do you like it, Johnny? JOHNNY: It's the biggest kitchen I've ever seen. SAMI: This whole place is so big I feel like I'll get lost if I don't leave a trail of bread crumbs. Abe chuckled. ABE: It certainly is big. But, I'll tell you this: you don't have to worry about food. You could eat here a whole year and never have the same thing twice. He pointed to a door. ABE: That's our walk-in freezer. In there, you've got fifteen rib roasts and thirty ten pound bags of hamburgers. You got twelve turkeys, two dozen pork roasts and twenty legs of lamb. Do you like lamb, scout? JOHNNY: No. ABE: What's your favorite food, then? JOHNNY: Chicken nuggets. Abe chuckled. ABE: I think we can find some of those too, scout. SAMI: Mr. Carver? ABE: Please, call me Abe. SAMI: Okay, Abe, how did you know we call Johnny scout?

*NOTE: Any lines written in Italics are said telepathically. Chapter 10 SALEM INN - KITCHEN SAMI: How did you know we call Johnny scout? ABE: Pardon? SAMI: Scout. You just called Johnny scout twice. ABE: Did I? SAMI: Yes. We call him that sometimes at home. ABE: Well, I must have heard you call him that, then. SAMI: Well, I guess that's possible. But, I don't remember calling him scout since we got here. ABE: Well, he kinda looks like a scout. Like in that book, "To Kill a Mockingbird". Abe chuckles. ABE: Speaking of nicknames, Mrs. DiMera, your husband introduced you as Samantha. Now, are you a Sam, a Sammy, or a Manny? SAMI: Sami. But, it's spelled with one M and an I. ABE: Okay. I like that. That's the prettiest. The three stopped in front of a large room. ABE: Now, this is our walk-in store room. It's also known as the pantry. They walk in. PANTRY The three walked in. ABE: In here, we have all of our dry and canned goods. We have canned fruits and vegetables. Canned fish and meats. Hot and cold cereals. French Toast Crunch, Cornflakes, Cocoa Puffs, Rice Krispies, Oatmeal, Wheaties and Cream of Wheat. We've got a dozen jugs of black molasses, sixty boxes of dried milk, thirty twelve pound bags of sugar... And then, it happened. Johnny was watching Abe tell Sami about the foods in the pantry. But, he heard something. He heard something with his mind. ABE: How would you like some ice cream, scout?Had he really just heard that? His brain had heard it, but his ears hadn't. it's as though Abe had been talking to Sami with his mouth, but talking to Johnny with his mind. ABE: ...apples, dried peaches, dried apricots, dried raisins and dried prunes. You know, Mrs. DiMera, you've gotta keep regular, if you want to be happy.

Chapter 11 SALEM INN - KITCHEN Abe had just finished showing Sami the pantry. Bo, Roman and E.J. walked up. E.J.: Hi. SAMI: Hi. BO: How goes the tour? SAMI: Great. ROMAN: Abraham, I hope you don't mind, but Beauregard here is taking E.J. down to the basement, and he'll need to borrow Samantha for a few minutes. ABE: That's no problem at all. I was just getting to the ice cream. Abe looks down at Johnny. ABE: You like ice cream, scout? Johnny nods. ABE: I thought so. It is okay with you two if I give Johnny here some ice cream, right? E.J.: Sure. SAMI: That's fine. Sound good to you, Johnny? JOHNNY: Yep. SAMI: Okay. Just behave yourself. Abe took Johnny's hand and the two started walking away. ABE: What kind of ice cream do you like, scout? JOHNNY: Chocolate. ABE: Then chocolate it shall be. ROMAN: Beauregard, I have some things left to do in my office. I think you can take the tour from here, can't you? BO: Sure thing, bro. Roman turned to leave, but looked back at E.J. one last time. ROMAN (under his breath): I don't like you. E.J.: Pardon? ROMAN: I said "good luck". Roman turned on his heel and left. SAMI: Well, it sure is big in here. BO: Yep. And most of the hotel guests are gone. By five o'clock tonight, you'll never even know anybody was here. SAMI: Just like a ghost ship. Bo nodded. The three left. A little while later, Abe and Johnny were sitting down at a counter eating ice cream. ABE: Do you know how I knew your nickname was scout? Johnny stared at Abe. ABE: You know what I'm talking about, don't you? Johnny blinked. ABE: I remember when I was a little boy, my grandmother and I could hold entire conversations without ever opening our mouths. She called it shining. For a long time, I thought it was just the two of us who could shine. But, there are other people that can do it, but they either don't know about it, or don't believe it. Johnny blinked. ABE: How come you don't want to talk about it? JOHNNY: I'm not supposed to. ABE: Who told you you aren't supposed to? JOHNNY: Zane. ABE: Who's Zane? JOHNNY: He's the little boy who lives in my mouth. ABE: I see. Is Zane the one who tells you things? JOHNNY: Yes. ABE: How does he tell you things? JOHNNY: It's like I go to sleep and he shows me things. But, when I wake up, I can't remember everything. ABE: Do your parents know about Zane? Johnny nodded. ABE: Do they know he shows you things? JOHNNY: No. Zane told me not to tell them. ABE: Has he told you anything about this place? About the Salem Inn? JOHNNY: I don't know. ABE: Think real hard, scout. JOHNNY: He might have showed me something. ABE: Try to think of what it was. JOHNNY: Mr. Carver, are you scared of this place? Abe chuckled slightly. ABE: No, I'm not scared. It's just...I think that some places are like people. Some shine and some don't. I think the Salem Inn has something similar to shining. JOHNNY: Is there something bad here?

Chapter 12 SALEM INN - HALLWAY Bo, Sami and E.J. walked down the hall. BO: I don't know if my brother mentioned, but we've had a lot of famous people stay here. SAMI: Like who? BO: Oh, let's see. There have been four presidents, a bunch of diplomats, movie stars. E.J.: Wow! SAMI: Sounds like this place is pretty popular. BO: Yep. KITCHEN Johnny and Abe continued eating ice cream. JOHNNY: Is something bad here? Abe looked at Johnny and thought for a moment. ABE: Well, scout when something big happens to a place, it can leave a trace of itself behind. Sort of like when you burn toast. The toast is gone, but the smell hangs in the air. Johnny blinked. ABE: Sometimes, places that have had something happen leave other kinds of traces behind. Not things that just anybody can notice. These are things that only people who shine can notice. JOHNNY: What do you mean? Abe thought for a moment. ABE: Well, you know how Zane showed you things about the Salem Inn? People who shine can often see things that haven't happened. But, they can also see things that happened a long time ago. I think a lot of things have happened in this hotel, and not all of them were good. It's nothing to be scared of, though. It's just like pictures in a book. JOHNNY: What about Room 237? Abe stared at Johnny. ABE: Room....237? JOHNNY: You're scared of Room 237, aren't you? Abe hesitated. ABE: No, I'm not. JOHNNY: Mr. Carver, what is in Room 237? Abe had to think about this. How could he explain it to a child? Even a child who could shine. Did he have that right to tell him? Did he even know himself what was really in there? Did anybody know what was really in there? Then, he came up with an answer. He hesitated for a moment longer, then suddenly became stern. Not overly so, but firm. ABE: Nothing. There's nothing in Room 237. But, you don't have any business going in there, so stay out. Do you understand me? Stay out!
