Just wondering as I'm working on my first fanfic. I was thinking about starting to post before I finish my story but I'm afraid of either not finishing or wanting to go back and edit things I've already posted.
If you post as you write have you ever regretted it and wanted to go back and rewrite?
Thanks!

Well I rarely post a story before I'm finished writing it, for just the reason you said wendylou. I work back and forth and tweak things from earlier in the story as the later part of the story unfolds during the writing process. However, I don't think I'm typical in that respect. I think most people post as they write. I'm also looking forward to reading your story.

IF I waited until I was finished people would be waiting years....LOL My stories are LONG.
To me the whole beauty of fanfic is getting instant feedback on your writing. If you totally completed your story, then the feedback you get will have no use...I guess except maybe for your next story. Although, the feedback doesn't get me to change the course of my story, but it does help me gauge what people like and what they don't etc. And maybe I could incorporate more of the liked things in future chapters. I am like a soap writer in that sense...they use fan feedback to help gauge things. That's why Days being 4 months in advance is insane. It basically makes all their feedback meaningless and they can't do anything to change stories that are tanking.
The instant feedback also helps to keep you writing. You are more accountable and want to finish when you know people are reading and waiting for the next chapter.
Best of luck in your writing!

I usually post as I go along, my chapters are short, and it makes it easier to edit, for me, it's different for everyone. Looking forward to seeing your story!

You guys make some good points about feedback etc. I'm trying to write a bit of a mystery so that combined with my inexperience makes me leery of posting before I'm done.
It's interesting to hear your comments on reader feedback. I've always wondered if the writers on here are tempted to change things they've already written because of reader comments.
Thanks!

It's interesting to hear your comments on reader feedback. I've always wondered if the writers on here are tempted to change things they've already written because of reader comments. You have to be strong like a soap writer...don't give the fans what they WANT give them what they NEED... LOL One of my writing idols Bob Guza said that and I totally agree with him. So no changing your plot because of reader comments. But I do think if readers respond to a certain character or certain setting then there's nothing wrong with giving them a little more of something like that, as long as you don't let reader feedback cause you to stray from the story you're planning to tell.
