So I thought I'd found a really cool gift for my brother who's a cook and a big Breaking Bad fan. It's a handmade cutting board that has a picture of the Heisenberg (the main character's alter ego) and below it it says "Let's Cook" referring to real cooking and the "cooking" they do in the show.
Anyway, I ordered it from an artist on Etsy that had lots of good reviews but I just got a message saying her machine is broken and she's having trouble getting parts, etc. and the new ship date won't be until DECEMBER 30! I have to let her know in 24 hours if I want to cancel my order.
I really liked the gift and I don't want to have to start all over at this late date. However, obviously I won't have it for Christmas. Would you cancel or just give him a picture of the item and say it's on its way?
Thanks!

I would go ahead and give him the picture and let him know it's coming.

If you think he will enjoy it that much, print out the picture - write I.O.U on the top of it and give that to him. We do that quite a bit when we run into these problems and no one's feelings are hurt because it's the effort that you put into finding that perfect gift that means the most.

wendylou, do you give birthday presents too? Maybe you can buy it and hold it for his next birthday. Then you could buy him a gift card or something easy for Christmas. If you want you could tell him that what you planned to get him is out of stock and he'll get it for his birthday instead.

My sister is notorious for ordering things online that don't actually show up by Christmas. Instead, she puts a picture of the item in a card and gives that. It's actually kind of fun to get a present a few days after Christmas. Makes the holiday last longer.

Thanks guys. I guess I will just give him a printout and tell him it's on the way. I'm just bummed because I always want everything to go off without a hitch but I know that's not life. I ordered it on Dec 5 so you'd think that would be plenty of time. Oh well.
Oh, and yes, kpatch, we do exchange birthday gift but his is in November so it's almost a year away. Don't want to hold onto it that long really but I could still do that if I find something else in the next few days.
