NBC has been promoting this live event that's on tonight (December 5th) for about a month or more.
Who's planning to watch?

I am planning to record... have an NFL football game also tonight. I can't wait to see Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp.

wish I was home to watch...I adore Audra McDonald's voice...Carrie Underwood meh...but used to love that movie as a kid. I even dorkily recreated scenes from the film when I was in Austria at some of the filming sites...including that gazebo.

My assessment so far. She has a good voice and seems to have rapport with the children, but she doesn't have the screen presence or acting abilities to carry off a role like Maria. She doesn't look much older than the kids. And the Captain is really stiff, I mean his acting, not his character.

I don't like Carrie Underwood, so I didn't watch, but from what I hear it was pretty terrible.

It was the best kind of train wreck. I couldn't look away. My sister texted me saying it was like "The Church Lady meets Days of our Lives." I responded "Hey hey! Days is awesome. It's like Church Lady meets One Live to Live. Get it straight."
Apologies to those that enjoyed it. And those that enjoyed OLTL.

I was curious about it mostly because it was live. I watched it off and on as I baked cookies and helped with homework.

The casting director should really be shot. Both leads were awful. Underwood was too American to play a European with any credibility, and the story was all about Europe/Austria during World War II. The Von Trapp kids were pretty good though. I love the book and lyrics but, last night, I thought the story felt a little dated for today's audience. And what was that "I" song that I never heard before in my life? Maybe it was from the stage play? I also didn't like how they switched up the order of the songs and left out songs I really like (like "I Have Confidence.") Best part was Audra McDonald. She brought tears to my eyes singing Climb Ev'ry Mountain.

I liked the kids. It made me want to watch the original. I really like listening to Christopher Plummer sing Edelweiss.

From what I understand, they were doing the stage play (which has different songs and in a different order) rather than a staged version of the movie. And I totally agree on the casting choices. Bill, I mean Stephen, I mean Captain von Trapp (Gaylord was his first name???) having a British accent was so off putting - even though that actually is the actor's real accent, it's still strange to hear. And a redneck Austrian nun?? Um, sure! Why not? It was as if they threw random accents into a hat and then had the cast draw to see what they'd sound like. Hot. Mess.

From what I read, yes, they did the stage version which did not include two songs which were written for the movie. Those 2 songs were not even written by Rodgers & Hammerstein. Also the order of the songs were different than the movie.
I had seen Audra McDonald sing Climb Every Mountain on The lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center on Wednesday night. It had brought me to tears then also.
I am surprised Stephen Moyer wasn't very good. He is an experienced British actor, but maybe because it was live it tended to make him a bit nervous. He is very good in True Blood.

Captain von Trapp (Gaylord was his first name???). His first name was the English equivalent of George. It's Georg (pronounced Gay-Org) with hard G sounds instead of soft G's.

Did they ever call him that in the movie? Seems like that's something I would have remembered.
