So I just went to the salon today to get a cut and color. Something I admit, I don't do often enough. Anyway, I went to the same salon I always go to but had a new girl. They go through the pricing ahead of time and well...I was dumbfounded. It cost quite a bit more than last time. And it was already expensive. I asked her about it but in the end I went ahead with what I wanted to do b/c I was already there, I would have been embarrassed to walk out and I really did want my hair done and didn't want to wait another day. My hair looks okay but I definitely don't think I got my money's worth. I feel like I spent way too much but maybe I'm out of touch. How much time and money do you spend on your hair? What all do you have done at the salon and how often do you go? Do you do any of it yourself?

wendylou --I went for a color and cut today too. I have been going to the same woman for about 30 yrs and she charges $52. I go every 5 weeks -- at home I just wash my hair every morning in the shower and let it dry. I would like to let my hair grow a little longer but it is so thick I get headaches if it gets past a certain length.

I spend about $50 on a cut and style.....color would push it close to $200. I have thick hair and a TON of it.. and even with how short you see it in my picture, its noted in my file that I require two appointment slots for a cut.

I color my hair at home. I've been doing it since college (so, about 16 years now) and I like the color I get. I did it once at a salon, paid through the nose, and didn't care for the result, so I went back to doing it myself.
As for the cut, I have naturally curly hair and it's a b**** to cut. As a result, I tend to get it cut once a year and then let it grown out. Last year, I cut it to my shoulders and when I went back this year it was to my butt. I've very conscious of my ends, so I use a lot of split end prevention stuff. I haaaaaaatttttteeeee finding a new person to cut my hair. Too many times it's been really messed up. Ponytails, buns, and updos are my friends.

wendylou - great thread topic! I don't spend much on hair cuts. $15 is the going rate around here for the low-end. I find that it doesn't matter what I spend, how much or how little. It's the haircutter that makes the difference. Down here in Florida I find that hair people are transient. As soon as I find someone I like, they move. I was using someone I liked for a long time until I realized that she doesn't clean her tools between clients. She just sticks them in a drawer. First, I brought my own brush and asked her to use it. But then I got skeeved out about the lack of cleanliness in general so I stopped going, even though I loved the way she did my hair. What I do spend a lot of money on is products. I'm a shampoo and product junkie. My hair is fine, so I am envious of those of you with lots of hair. ( kathyj, I want some of your hair!) So I am always buying products for thickening and volume. And I love shine sprays. I am getting a haircut tomorrow, by the way, so it must be the weekend for it.

I have hair that has enough curl in it to do nothing, so I get a perm once a year for style. It is about $100 for the perm and a cut, and then after this I usually go about every nine weeks for a cut and it costs $38.

I am very happy with the guy who cuts my hair. He has his own salon now. I think he gives me a discounted rate as a friend of mine introduced me to him. She's known him since high school. He only charges me $20 for a cut and style. I am so confident in him that I let him cut 8 inches off my hair last year and let him choose the style. I just told him the length I wanted it to be.

That's awesome fluffy. I wish I could find a stylist I could trust enough to say "Just do what you think would look best." I'm terrified of what I'd walk out with. What I need is to get on one of those makeover shows where a Hollywood stylist comes and does something completely unexpected but totally awesome. I just can't trust a normal person to do it. And I don't want to spend more than $50 for a haircut. That kinda limits where I can go.

My hair is on the thin side, so I have to be careful who I let cut it. And, just like Kpatch, I'm in Florida - lots of transient people. As soon as I find someone, they leave... So, as a result, I don't cut my hair very often. But, when I do, it's drastic. Right now, my hair is long (past my shoulders - probably half way down my back). When I cut it, I cut it to boy length - really short. (I have the face for it).

I just got back from a haircut. I think it's okay. It usually takes a couple days to fall into place and a couple weeks to get to the best length. My usual cutter wasn't there, even though he was scheduled to be. They told me he was running late, like, like 45 minutes late. So I said I'd be back and then I took a half hour walk. I was planning to take a walk anyway, and now I don't have to walk at home. When I came back and he still wasn't there, I decided to let one of the other hairdressers cut my hair, because I didn't know if my usual guy was going to ever show up. So of course he walked in as soon as the other cutter started. Oh well. Hope the cut falls in right. The good news is there was an unadvertised weekend special and it cost $7.99.

I usually get my hair cut about once every three or four months. The low-end cost for a cut is around 15 dollars here. he last time I got my hair cut there was a Tuesday special, any cut for 10 dollars. I don't color even though my gray is starting to come in strong in a few places. For the girls, I will trim their bangs at home a few times before I take them in for a hair cut. I'm really thinking about growing Annabelle's bangs out so I don't have to mess with them anymore, but she's not ready for that yet.

Monica grew her bangs out a couple years ago. It's a pain for awhile.
I schedule my appointments by text. I like being able to send a quick request when I think of it.
I'd like to get Sami's hair cut but she gets really upset when we bring it up.
I've never colored my hair. Luckily no gray hair yet. I'm sure I'll start coloring it eventually.

My best friend is a hairdresser and does my hair. If she is just doing a cut she usually doesn't charge me. When she did my foil highlights/lowlights she charged me $40 which I think is pretty reasonable. I have really thick, frizzy, strange hair so I don't trust people with it. I have only let 3 people touch it since I was 12. She also cuts the kids hair for me. We don't get haircuts or colors that often. A couple times a year for me. More often for Liam.

Wow, so great to have a friend who cuts hair and doesn't charge. I feel like I am still on a quest for the right cutter.
