I wonder if he actually likes Joy or he's up to something.

I wonder if he actually likes Joy or he's up to something. Wondering the same thing... I really hope he isn't up to something. It would hurt Joy too badly.

He's a little to young to be chasing after girls like that.

Chapter 4 WOODS Joy and Johnny had gone for another walk in the woods a night or two later. JOY: I don't want to sound rude or anything, but, how old are you? JOHNNY: 12. JOY: 12? JOHNNY: Yeah. 12. JOY: Oh. JOHNNY: What? JOY: Nothing. It's just...you don't seem 12. JOHNNY: How old do I seem? JOY: I don't know...15, maybe. You don't act 12. You definately don't look 12. JOHNNY: I hit puberty early. JOY: Oh. Gotcha. JOHNNY: So, at rik of sounding rude, I'm only asking because you are first, how old are you? JOY: 16. JOHNNY: 16. Cool. JOY: I guess. I'm not liking it too much. JOHNNY: Why not? JOY: Because...well, mostly because of my problem. JOHNNY: Joy, you don't have a problem. JOY: You know what I mean. JOHNNY: Oh, that. You gotta stop thinking of that as a problem. JOY: What do you mean? JOHNNY: It's really not a big deal. JOY: It is to me. JOHNNY: I know it is. I know it seems like one. But, to the people that know you, the real you, your friends and family, they won't even notice. JOY: I don't have many friends. Everyone makes fun of me for it. JOHNNY: I'm sure Chloe and your parents don't. I don't. JOY: Chloe's never home. You're right about my parents at least. And, you're different. I don't know what it is about you, but there's something different. JOHNNY: You also stutter less when you talk to me. JOY: That's because I'm comfortable around you. Because you've been so nice to me about it the last couple days. Maybe you're right, though. Maybe if I tell myself that it's not such a big deal, other people will stop noticing. JOHNNY: It's worth a try. I hope it works for you. JOY: Thanks. JOHNNY: You're welcome. Johnny got out a piece of paper and a pencil. He wrote on it then handed the paper to Joy. JOHNNY: Here's my number and e-mail. If you ever need to talk, call or e-mail me. JOY: Thanks. You're really sweet, you know that? I hope you always stay so sweet. JOHNNY: Thanks. JOY: I don't know why, but I can't get my mind off of you. The last couple days, all I've wanted to do is hang out with you. Maybe it's because you're the first boy who's ever been nice to me. I don't know what's going on in my mind. But, I do know that I really, really like you. And, when I'm around you, I just want to...want to... Joy leaned over and kissed Johnny. JOY: ...do that. Johnny touched Joy's cheek. The two leaned in and kissed.

Chapter 5 COMMON ROOM For the entire first week of summer camp, things were going well for Joy and Johnny. They got along exceptionally well and were insuperable, expect for during bed time. Early into the second week, Allie walked over to Johnny. She had already been introduced to Joy by Johnny earlier in the week. ALLIE: Johnny, we need to talk. JOHNNY: Okay. I'll be back in a minute. Johnny got up and walked with Allie to a different corner of the room. JOHNNY: Look, if this is about me not wanting to be your partner... ALIIE: It's not about that. But, it does have something to do with your partner. JOHNNY: Oh, she's great. What about her? ALLIE: She might well be great, but she's also much too old for you. JOHNNY: What do you mean? ALLIE: Well, don't tell me you haven't noticed, Johnny, but she's 16. The two of us are only 12. JOHNNY: So? ALLIE: So, in two years she'll be 18, an adult, while we're still only 14. You can't honestly tell me you don't see a problem with that! JOHNNY: Okay, so I'm a little young for her. I like her, she likes me. What's the deal? ALLIE: You have to stop this, Johnny. JOHNNY: Why? I'm happy and so is she. Why should I stop if we're both perfectly happy? Besides, look at the age difference between our mom and Lucas. He's five or six years older than her. ALLIE: That's different. Mom and Dad are adults, you two aren't. JOHNNY: But, we will be, someday. ALLIE: Not for a very long time, especially not you. JOHNNY: We'll make it work, somehow. I'm not gonna stop seeing her. Johnny walked away. Allie waited for a little while, until Johnny went to the bathroom. Then, she walked over to Joy. ALLIE: Hey, Joy. JOY: Hi. ALLIE: Can I talk to you about something? JOY: Sure. What's up? ALLIE: I need to talk to you about Johnny.

Oh boy, I don't think Johnny is going to like Allie doing this...but I do agree that Johnny is too young for Joy. They should have just stayed friends.

Chapter 6 WOODS That night, things did not go well. Johnny had come back from the bathroom and things were completely different. Joy barely said anything. Even though Johnny tried to ask her what was wrong, and she claimed it was nothing, Johnny could tell that that was a lie. At dinner, Joy gave Johnny a note. The note said "Talk to you in the woods tonight". So, that night, as they had done for the last week and a half, they went out to the woods. The first few minutes of their walk was in silence. Then, Johnny decided to break it. JOHNNY: Did I do something wrong? Joy shook her head. JOHNNY: Did I upset you in some way? Joy shook her head again. JOHNNY: Then, what's going on? Because, one second I thought everything was great, but now it seems like you're mad at me for some reason. JOY: I'm not mad at you. JOHNNY: Then, what is it? Joy took a deep breath and sat down on a nearby bench. JOY: It's...this is gonna be hard for me to do. JOHNNY: What is it? Johnny sat down next to Joy. JOHNNY: Joy, whatever it is, I'll understand. JOY: I'm not sure you will. I'm not even sure that I understand why she did this. JOHNNY: Why who did what? JOY: I've been trying to put this off all day, because I really like you and I don't want to hurt you. You're a really nice guy. But, I don't think we should date. JOHNNY: Why not? JOY: I'm too old for you. I'm 16. You're 12. In two years, I could go to jail for dating you. And, you would be marked as jail bait. I don't want that for either of us. This time it was Johnny who took a deep breath. JOY: I'm sorry, Johnny. Like I said, I don't want to hurt you. Maybe in a few years, when we're both over 18... JOHNNY: What if we've both moved on? What if we've changed by then? What if we're completely different then to who we are now? JOY: I don't know. I really don't. I don't want to do this, Johnny. This is tearing me up inside. You're the first boy who's ever been nice to me. The first boy who's ever really cared about me. And I'm so sorry! I don't want to do this, but I have to. JOHNNY: It was Allie. Wasn't it? JOY: Well... JOHNNY: Allie told you to stop seeing me, didn't she? JOY: Yeah. JOHNNY: She's trying to tear us apart. She's trying to get back at me for not being her partner at the beginning of camp. She claims it has nothing to do with that, but I can see it. This has everything to do with it. JOY: Like I said, I don't want to hurt you. I hope we can still be friends. JOHNNY: Yeah. I guess that's it. We'll just have to stay friends. The two walked back to the cabin. CABIN Joy walked into the girl's room. Johnny stayed in the Common Room for a while. Soon, there were only the counselors, Johnny, and Allie in the room. Johnny walked over to Allie. JOHNNY: How could you? Allie looked up. ALLIE: I did what was necessary. JOHNNY: And so will I...when the time comes. I'll do what's necessary, too.

If Joy wasn't such a loner I doubt she'd have fallen for a 12 year old boy. Sounds like Allie has some trouble heading her way.
