For writers: Why do you write fan fiction?
For readers: Why do you read fan fiction?

I discovered fan fiction in early 2011. I was immediately addicted. I love being able to read about my favorite characters who are currently off screen. Fan fiction is great because many of the stories are more enjoyable than what is on screen. I've read fics that resolve stories that were dropped on screen. Some fics show a couple that you always wanted to see together on screen but that never got together. Some stories put the characters in completely new situations. It's fun to read a back story for one of your faves.

I wrote my story because I was desperate to see them together, so I guess you could say it was wish fulfillment.
As for stories I read, I read them for the romance/sexy times that are missing onscreen. If the show can't get it right, a good fanfic writer can.

I like seeing the characters in different situations, especially if they fill in or fix something that I didn't like the way that it happened. I also like reading about the characters that are off screen and I miss.

I wrote my first story because I was not happy with the way the show had handled things and I wrote what I wanted to see happen and I had a need to satisfy that. Then I wrote a story to explore a different scenario. Also a story with action and romance doesn't have the set constraints the show has..LOL

I like DD's description of writing fanfic as being "wish fulfillment." I agree with that. There are always things that don't work out the way I want them to on-air, so writing fanfics gives me the chance to make things right (for me anyway).

To me fanfiction is just fiction...I write it like I write anything else. Certain characters inspire me to tell stories, so I borrow them for awhile and write about them.
I have been a very blessed fan in that I have enjoyed virtually all the stories I have been a fan of over the years - I wouldn't change much of anything. None of the fanfiction I have written is about righting something that I think the show got wrong. I am sort of praising the stories that reeled me in by expanding on the characters or plots
As a reader, I like to read stories about characters that I feel a connection to. I have a definite type of wounded damaged dark heroes and strong, smart, survivor women that I enjoy reading stories about. I especially love stories that aren't afraid to make characters face pain or adversity. A story can go more in depth than a show or movie can...and I love stories that are layered and thought provoking.

I like that in a story you can have characters interact that would never be in story lines together on air. It opens up a world of possibilities.
