Chapter 1
KIRIAKIS MANSION, CIARA'S BEDROOM
Ciara: Mommy, I have a question. Hope: What is it, sweetie? Ciara: What did you do with all those wallets? Hope: All what wallets? Ciara: All the wallets that were in the treasure box under your bed? Hope: Oh those. I gave them back. Ciara: You did? Hope: Of course. It's wrong to steal. Ciara: I know. That's what you taught me. I just thought you forgot. Hope: No sweetie, I didn't forget. I know the difference between right and wrong. Ciara: Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Hope [chuckling]: Where did you hear that? Ciara: From one of Daddy's favorite TV shows. Hope: You know that mommy didn't steal those wallets on purpose, don't you? Ciara: Stealing is stealing. Hope: Well, that's true. But mommy was sick. She wasn't in her right mind. Ciara: So what else is new? Hope: And Daddy and Uncle Roman and Uncle Abe and Uncle Justin helped mommy get through the legal maze. So, all I have to do now is some community service. Ciara: That doesn't set a very good example for little kids like me. Hope: You're right, sweetie. So do as I say, not as I do. Hope kisses Ciara, tucks her in, and leaves her room.
As Hope walks into the hallway, a gloved hand grabs her and places a chloroformed handkerchief over her mouth. Hope falls to the ground.

BRADY PUB
Bo is sitting at the bar, nursing a bottle of beer. Caroline comes out of the kitchen. Caroline: Bo! I didn’t realize you were still here. I was just about to lock up. Bo: I was just about to leave. Caroline: You don’t seem anxious to get home. Trouble in paradise? Bo: Nah. Everything’s fine. Caroline: What’s wrong? Isn’t Carly everything you hoped she’d be? Wasn’t she worth it to give up everything in life that’s important to you? Bo: Ma. Caroline: Don’t “Ma” me. Bo: I know you don’t approve of my life right now. Caroline: You’re right. I don’t. Bo: Like it or not, I’m happy. Caroline: Ah, yes ... as soon as I saw you, I said, there goes Bo, my happy-go-lucky son with his frown lines, knit brow, and stooped shoulders. Bo: I miss Ciara. Caroline: And Hope. Bo: Not so much Hope, but the life we had together. Caroline: That doesn’t make sense. It was Hope who made that life with you. Bo: Things aren’t always as black and white as you see them. She changed, Ma. She stopped looking at me the way she used to. Heck, we both changed. Caroline: People change, Bo. That’s normal. You grow up, you experience things, both good and bad. But you do it together. Bo: For better or worse. Caroline: Yes! Bo: Even if there’s more worse than better? Caroline: Bo, I can’t live your life for you. You’re doing what you think you have to do. I don’t like it, but I guess I can’t change it. Bo: Me either. Look, I gotta go, Ma. He gives her a hug. Love you. Caroline: I love you too. Bo: I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Lock the door.
Bo leaves the Pub and, as he rounds the corner toward the parking lot, a gloved hand grabs him from behind and places a chloroformed handkerchief over his mouth. After a weak struggle, Bo falls to the ground.

UNDISCLOSED LOCATION
Bo opens his eyes. He’s lying in a strange bed and everything’s kind of blurry. He sees a figure in front of him but can’t make out the face. It’s a man wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans. Bo is determined not to show his captor any fear. Bo: Who are you? Where am I? And what do you want from me? Man: Welcome, Beauregarde, to the Fancy Face Five, your floating home for the next couple weeks. Bo: Weeks??? Hey. Wait a minute. I know that voice. Steve? Is that you? Steve: In the flesh. Bo: Were you kidnapped too? Steve: Not exactly. Here, drink this. You’ll feel better. Bo: What is it? Steve: A very special compound made just for you. It’s called H2O. Bo [sitting up]: Thanks man. I’m parched. Steve: Do you feel well enough to go up on deck? Bo: Deck? We on a boat? Steve: That’s what I just said. You must still be a little foggy. Let’s go up top and get some fresh air. They go upstairs and stand near the railing at the back of the boat. Bo: This looks like ... Steve: The Fancy Face? Bo: Yeah. What the hell is going on here?
Just then, from the stairs at the front of the boat, Kayla and Hope emerge. Bo: Hope! Kay! What’s going on? Steve, do you know who’s holding us captive? And why? Hope: That’s what I want to know too. Kayla: We can answer that question. We are. Bo: Huh? Hope: Wait. Where’s Ciara? Who’s taking care of her? Kayla: Victor and Vivian. Hope: What??? Kayla: Sorry, just kidding. She’s with Doug and Julie. Bo: Did I hear you right? You two kidnapped us? Hope: That doesn’t make any sense. Kayla: It’s sort of an intervention. Bo: Still not following. Kayla: Mom and Doug and Julie have been beside themselves over your breakup. Mom talks about it all the time. I mean she’s really heartsick over it. Bo: It’s really not any of their business. Kayla: Maybe not, but Steve and I were talking and we just ... Steve: ... We couldn’t believe that the second greatest supercouple of all time on Days was splitsville. Bo: Second greatest? Steve: So we had to see it to believe it. Hope: Well you can believe it. So turn this boat around and take us home. Steve: No can do. Don't bother thanking us now, but we came here all the way from Africa, and I shelled out muy dinero for this bucket. We even painted it. Check it out. Bo and Hope look over the railing at the side of the boat and see the words “Fancy Face V.” Hope: Fancy Face Five? Bo: You bought us a boat? Steve: Well, rented it anyway. Hope: Look you guys, we appreciate the sentiment. But it’s not gonna work. Come on. Let’s go home. Kayla: We went to an awful lot of trouble ... Bo: You know, I know how to steer a boat. If you won’t turn us around, I will. Steve: Ah, but you would need the key. He holds up the key. Without this key, you can’t even pull up anchor. Bo: Give it to me, Steve. Come on, man. Steve drops the key down the front of his pants and laughs.

GALLEY
Kayla and Steve are in the kitchen preparing lunch and laughing. Kayla: I can’t believe you did that! Steve: Seriously? I thought it was totally in character. Kayla: Oh definitely. But that’s not really the key to the boat! What’s that key for anyway? Steve: It’s the key to the supply cabinet at the clinic in Eritrea.
UP ON DECK
Hope: Where do you suppose we are? Bo: That’s anybody’s guess. I can’t see land from here, so I don’t even have any landmarks. Hope: They took my cell phone. Bo: Mine too. Hope: Maybe if I jumped overboard and just started swimming, I’d make it to shore in a few hours. I’m a very strong swimmer, you know. Bo: Do you want to get away from me that badly? Hope: Well I don’t want to stay here. I’ve got things to do.
Kayla and Steve come up on deck with a platter of sandwiches and fruit. Steve: You don’t have to worry, Hope. We cleared it with the Mayor and you’re both taking a leave of absence. Hope: Is everybody in on this? Kayla: Uh huh. Here, have some lunch. We have turkey and Swiss, salami and Swiss, and ham and Swiss. Bo: Suppose we don’t like Swiss? Kayla: You forget who you’re talking to, baby brother. I happen to know that Swiss cheese is your favorite. Bo: Maybe my taste has changed. Steve: No sh!t. Hope: How do we know these sandwiches aren’t poisoned? Steve takes a bite of a sandwich and starts talking with his mouth full. Steve: We’re devious, but we’re not evil. Eat. This is good, baby. Kayla: Well, we’ve got plenty more where that came from. We’re well stocked on provisions. Steve: Yup, we’re ready for anything. If we need to be out here a month, two months, we can do it. It’s all up to you guys. Bo: Gee, you thought of everything. Hope: Where are we? Where in the world are we? Steve: We’re in the middle of the ocean, baby.

THAT NIGHT ON DECK
Steve, Kayla, Bo and Hope are sitting on deck under the stars with some flameless candles flickering in the center of the table. “Moon River” is playing on the tape recorder and Steve is accompanying the song on his harmonica.
Steve [putting his harmonica away]: Beautiful night, huh baby? Kayla: So peaceful. Bo: I’m gonna turn in. Steve: Don’t be a party pooper, dude. Bo: This doesn’t feel like much of a party. Steve: Dude, the four of us used to be the life of the party. Hey, let’s play a party game. He takes out his harmonica and blows a couple notes. Hope: I think I’ll turn in, too. Steve: What are you gonna turn into? Get it, Hope? Turn in ... turn into? Hope: Don’t quit your day job, Steve. Steve: Wait. I know! Let’s play Truth or Dare. Bo: I have a better idea. Let’s not. Steve: I’ll start. Okay, sweetness, Truth or Dare? Kayla: I hate dares. Okay. Truth. Steve: Okay, here goes. Who loves ya baby? Kayla: You do. Steve: See how easy that was? He leans over and kisses her. Steve: Bo, you’re next. Truth or Dare? Bo: Ayayay. I don’t know. Truth. Steve: Here’s a good question. Why did you choose Carly over Hope? Kayla: Yikes. Bo: Uh uh. I’m not answering that one. Steve: You have to. It’s the law. Kayla: I’m kind of interested in hearing the answer too. Hope [raising an eyebrow]: So am I. Bo: Okay, here goes. I chose Carly because Hope didn’t need me anymore. Hope: What? Bo: You didn’t need me anymore, and Carly did. I’m someone who needs to be needed. Not sure why. I just do. Steve: Interesting. Bo: Besides, Hope stopped loving me. Hope shakes her head incredulously and thinks to herself “That’s not true.” She looks over at Kayla, Steve, and then Bo, and notices they’re all staring at her. Just then, she realizes that she wasn’t just thinking those words to herself. She had said them out loud.

AT NIGHT ON DECK
Bo: Besides, Hope stopped loving me. Hope: That’s not true. What’s the matter? Why are you all looking at me like that? What I mean is that Bo’s lying. He’s just giving himself a convenient excuse, using me as the scapegoat. Well, I won’t sit still for it and I don’t appreciate it. Go to hell, Brady. With that, Hope gets up and heads downstairs to her cabin. Bo: At least she’s still calling me “Brady.” I guess that’s something. Kayla: You are unbelievable, little brother. Kayla gets up and goes downstairs too. Bo and Steve are left alone. Bo: I suppose you’re going to give me a piece of your mind too. Steve: Nah. Not enough of it left to give away. But I will say this ... Bo: Ha! Here it comes.
DOWNSTAIRS
Hope is sitting on her bed, relieved to be away from Bo, and grateful that she was able to cover her tracks and not reveal what she really meant. She starts to cry as Kayla knocks and enters Hope’s cabin. Kayla: He still gets to you, doesn’t he? Hope: How can he not? Kayla: When he said you stopped loving him and you said that’s not true, I thought you were about to make a confession or something. Hope: It just came out. I didn’t mean to say it out loud. Kayla: So is that true? Did you not fall out of love with him? Hope: Kay, I’ve never stopped loving Bo. I never will. How could I? I mean, he defines me. He’s the only man I’ve ever loved and I’ve loved him for so long, it’s like breathing. If I ever stop breathing, I’ll die. And if I ever stop loving Bo ... Kayla: You feel like you’ll die. Hope nods and softly cries as Kayla puts her arms around Hope to comfort her.
UP ON DECK
Steve: To quote your big brother, what da hell are you thinking, man? Bo: Steve ... Steve: Bo, we know each other a long time. A looong time. What’s going on with you? Midlife crisis? Male menopause? Bo: Geez you’re blunt. But I guess that’s as good an explanation as any. I just got tired of getting blamed all the time. You know, getting that look from Hope. Steve: The look? Bo: Yeah, you know the look. That stabbed-through-the-heart-disapproving-lifted eyebrow-it’s-all-your-fault look. Steve: Can’t say I’ve ever been on the receiving end of that look ... Bo: Count your blessings. Steve: ... but come on, man, you’re a big boy. You can take a “look,” can’t you? Bo: Not that one. You know, a lot has gone wrong in our lives over the past five years. Ever since I found out Chelsea is my daughter. I mean I love the kid and all, but she raised hell when she first came into my life. And with what happened to Zach, well ... that blame fell squarely on my shoulders. As if I didn’t suffer. As if Zach’s death didn’t rip my heart out too. Steve: Ah, now I see. If you’re not with Hope, you don’t get blamed for Zach’s death. Bo: I guess that’s the heart of the matter. Steve: I’ve got another Truth or Dare for you. Bo: No more, please. Steve: Do you still love Hope?

STEVE AND KAYLA’S CABIN
Later, Steve and Kayla are talking in bed. Kayla: I’m not sure this was such a good idea. Steve: I was thinking the same thing, baby. Kayla: Bo and Hope are two of our favorite people in the world and we’re not accomplishing anything except to make them even more miserable. Steve: I know. Kayla: I think we should head back. Steve: You’re right. We’ll start for Salem in the morning. Kayla: You’re the best. Steve: No, you are, sweetness. He kisses her.
THE NEXT MORNING ON THE BRIDGE
The next morning, Hope enters the bridge and finds Bo trying to hot wire the steering panel.
Hope: Making any progress? Bo: I wish I could say yes. You look tired. Hope: I didn’t sleep well. I hate being kidnapped. Brings back bad memories. Bo: Well, this isn’t working either. I guess we may as well make the best of things. Hope: Oh really? You remind me of an old Stephen Stills song. Bo: Marrakkesh Express? Hope: No. Love the One You’re With. Bo: Geez, Hope, I just meant we should relax and try to get along. Hope: Oh. Bo: Why are you up on your high horse all the time lately? Hope: What do you mean? Bo: What do I mean??? I mean if looks could kill, I’d be dead.
Steve and Kayla enter the bridge.
Steve: I have an announcement to make. We’re heading back to Salem. Hope: We are? Steve: It’s what you both want, right? Kayla and me were talking last night and we realized that we made a mistake. Kayla: We had no right to interfere in your lives. Bo: How long will it take us to get back? Steve: Well, we’re about 400 miles from the Port of Salem, so about ... Bo: About 2 days. Steve: Give or take.

THAT NIGHT
Steve and Kayla are alone on deck, dancing under the stars.
Kayla: Steve, why did you tell Bo that we’re 400 miles from Salem when we’re really less than 100 miles away. Steve: I don’t know. I didn’t mean to lie to them. It just sort of came out. Kayla: You’re still holding out hope for the two of them, aren’t you? Steve: You know me. Kayla: The hopeless romantic. Steve: Not hopeless, baby. I just don’t give up easily. Hmmm, that gives me an idea. He puts a CD on the CD player. Click the link to listen to the song.
Steve: Come on baby. Let’s make ourselves scarce. Steve takes Kayla’s hand and they go downstairs.
From her cabin, Hope hears the song and makes her way up on deck. Bo enters the deck from the opposite end of the boat. They walk toward each other.
Without thinking Bo takes Hope in his arms and they start dancing. They get lost in each other’s eyes as they slow-dance without saying a word. Eventually Hope rests her head on Bo’s shoulder.
Hope: I’m surprised you did this, Brady. Bo: Did what? Hope: Played this song for me. Bo: Wait a sec. I thought you played this song for me. Hope: What’s going on? What are you doing? Bo: Me? Nothing. I thought ... Hope: I’m so tired of this nonsense. So tired of the games. I cannot wait to get home to Salem and get away from you. She heads back downstairs. Bo [muttering]: Away from me? But I live in Salem too.

ON DECK, THE NEXT MORNING
Bo is having breakfast on deck with Kayla and Steve, when Hope arrives.
Hope: Can I talk to you for a minute, Bo? Bo: Sure, what’s up? Hope: Um, in private, over there. They walk over to the railing at the other side of the boat as Steve and Kayla glance at each other.
Bo: Look Fancy Face, I’m really sorry about the misunderstanding last night. Hope: Me too. Bo: You are? Hope: Kayla explained that Steve put on the song. Bo: Son of a gun. Hope: I guess I got carried away. Bo: We both did. It felt pretty good, didn’t it? Hope: You know, Brady, it never occurred to me that we wouldn’t be growing old together. I mean, I thought we were a lock. I thought we were forever. I had no doubts whatsoever. Bo: I know what you mean. But you can’t always know where the road ends up. Hope: Anyway, we’ll be home at this time tomorrow, so I hope we can just put this all behind us and be normal again. Bo: What’s normal? Hope: Good point. Look, we need to interact because of Ciara, so we should at least try being friendly. Bo: Hey, I’m not the one who’s unfriendly. Hope: I guess you’re right. Bo: Do you know that’s the first time you’ve said I’m right in more than a year?

Bo: Do you know that’s the first time you’ve said I’m right in more than a year? Hope: I ... No, I didn’t realize that. I guess I have been pretty hard on you. Bo: I think you’re harboring a lot of anger toward me. I’m not saying it’s undeserved. It just gets tiresome being the whipping boy all the time. Hope: I can imagine. Bo: It used to be whatever we imagine. Remember? Hope: I remember. Bo: We’ve had a lot of hard times recently. But we also had a lot of good times together, Fancy Face. Let’s not throw it all away.
Bo and Hope reminisce about their life together. Please click the link to remember along with them.

THE BRIDGE, THAT AFTERNOON
Bo enters the bridge where Steve is steering the boat. Bo: I can see land. Steve: We’re a little bit ahead of schedule. We’ll be back in Salem by tonight. Bo: So soon? Steve: I thought you couldn’t wait to get back to Carly. Now you sound reluctant to go home. What gives? Bo: It was kind of fun hanging out with you guys. Steve: And with Hope? Bo: God I miss that woman. Just then Hope enters the bridge, and Bo and Steve aren’t sure if she heard what Bo said. Steve: Um, take over lieutenant. I gotta ... um ... visit the little boys’ room. He heads upstairs. Hope: I heard you say you miss Carly. I’ll bet you’re really anxious to get home to her. Bo: Is that what you think? Hope: It’s what you said. Bo: No. It’s not. Hope: I heard you say you miss her. Bo: Geez, I was talking about you, Fancy Face. Hope: You miss me? Bo: That’s a fact. Hope: And you think that little revelation is going to make me swoon all over you? Bo spins the steering wheel hard, causing the boat to list. Hope falls into Bo’s arms. He looks at her and smirks. Bo: Mission accomplished. Hope [pushing him away]: What do you think you’re doing, Brady? Bo: I’m turning this boat back around. Hope: What? Bo: I’m not ready to go back to Salem yet. Our work here is not done. Hope: This is ridiculous, Bo. Bo: No, this is smart. What’s ridiculous is throwing away a 25-year love story. Hope: There’s too much water under the bridge, Bo, and too many notches on your bedpost for this to work out anymore. Now point this boat toward Salem. I want to go home. I’m serious, Bo.

THE BRIDGE
Readers, please click the link to hear the song that accompanies this chapter.
Steve returns to the Bridge where Bo and Hope are arguing.
Steve: What’s going on? Are you crazy? I got mustard all over my favorite shirt when the boat tilted. Bo: How much gas is in the tank? Steve: Oh plenty. Bo: Good, because this journey isn’t over yet. Steve: Cool! Hope: Steve, wait, help me talk some sense into him. Steve: No can do. He’s all yours. Steve heads back to his cabin.
STEVE AND KAYLA'S CABIN
Steve: Sweetness! Kayla: What? What’s that funny look on your face? And what’s that yellow stuff on your shirt? Steve: I think we may have a breakthrough. Kayla: Do you mean ...? Steve: Looks like Beauregard is trying to work his magic. Kayla: Is Hope buying it? Steve: Not yet, but I have faith in the boy. Kayla: This is really good news. Steve: It puts me in a little bit of a romantic frame of mind too. Kayla: Really? Well, maybe we can turn a little bit into a lot. Steve: I’m all yours baby.
THAT NIGHT
Bo has prepared a romantic dinner table with candles and fake flowers. Tonight We Love is playing on the CD player. He’s sitting at the table with a goofy grin on his face when Hope comes up to the deck.
Hope: Where’s Kayla and Steve? Bo: They went out. Hope: Excuse me? Bo: They have other plans. Hope: Well, I’m gonna turn in early too. Good night. Bo jumps up, blocks her way, and grabs her by her arms. Bo: No, you can’t leave. The night is young. Hope: The night may be young, but I’m not. Bo: Huh? Hope: I’m not a wide-eyed teenager anymore, Bo. I don’t swoon whenever you call me “Fancy Face” and I don’t melt over a romantic dinner for two. No roses. No rose-colored glasses. I have no illusions anymore. Bo: Then let’s go in with our eyes open this time. Hope: Ha! No offense, but I don’t like what I see. Bo: Ouch. Look Fancy Face ... Hope: Call me Hope. Bo: Hope. I know I’ve made mistakes ... Hope: That’s putting it mildly ... Bo: We both have. But the point is, Ma’s right. We should be together. We should have always been together. And if I hadn’t been made to believe you were dead, I would never have taken up with Carly in the first place all those years ago. Hope: Or Billie? Bo: Or Billie. You are the woman who owns my heart, first last and always. I want to live with you, I want to grow old with you. I want to die with your arms around me. Hope raises an eyebrow and has a brief fantasy in which she has her arms around Bo in a stranglehold and she’s squeezing the air out of his windpipe. Bo: I’ve never loved anyone else, Hope. Hope: Oh really? Bo: Not the way I love you. And I never will. Hope: Until the next time the going gets rough. Bo: You’re not making this easy. Hope: Why should I, Brady? Life isn’t easy and ours has been especially hard. It’s taken its toll. Bo: I don’t know what else to say or do to prove how much I love you. Hope: There isn’t anything else to say. It’s all just water under the bridge now. Bo: "Time we have wasted on the way." Hope: Another tribute to Stephen Stills? Bo: What can I tell you? He’s my hero. Hope: You used to be mine. Bo: Believe it or not, I understand why you don’t trust me anymore, but I don’t for a second believe you don’t love me anymore. [There’s a long pause.] And ... You’re not denying it. Hope turns to look at him. Hope: You know I’ll always love you, Brady. I just don’t think it’s enough anymore.

UP ON DECK, THE NEXT DAY
Hope is in a lounge chair reading a magazine, while Steve and Kayla are downstairs in the galley making lunch and Bo is manning the Bridge. She spies the tape player on the table and presses “play.” The song that comes on is Moon River, with some background accompaniment by Steve on his harmonica. She smiles as she realizes that she’s listening to the playback from the first night they were on the boat. She hears the conversation between Bo and Steve after she went downstairs that night.
*** Steve: To quote your big brother, what da hell are you thinking, man? Bo: Steve ... Steve: Bo, we know each other a long time. A looong time. What’s going on with you? Midlife crisis? Male menopause? Bo: Geez you’re blunt. I guess that’s as good an explanation as any. I just got tired of getting blamed all the time. You know, getting that look from Hope. Steve: The look? Steve: Do you still love Hope? Bo: Are you kidding me? Steve: I’m just askin’. Bo: Of course I do. Of course I love Hope. More than life itself. Loving Hope is like ... breathing. She’s my oxygen. She’s in every breath I take. Steve: Then why did you choose Carly over her. Bo: I didn’t. Hope left me. She left me, took the little one, and left no wiggle room. I begged her to come back to me, I begged her to talk to me, but she was immovable. She was done with me. Steve: No offense, Bo, but Carly??? Why Carly? Bo: Why do you think? She was there. I was lonely. I’m a guy. I didn’t want to be alone. Steve: That’s pretty pathetic. Bo: I know. Steve: So you’re not in love with Carly. Bo: Nope. ***
Steve and Kayla come upstairs with a platter of sandwiches and fruit. Hope quickly presses the “off” button on the CD player.
Kayla: Hope, are you okay? You look funny.
To be continued. Tune in for the finale ...

ON THE DECK OF THE FANCY FACE V
Kayla: Hope, are you okay? You look funny. What’s the matter? Hope: I’m just as much to blame as he is. Kayla: What are you talking about? Hope: Where’s Bo? Kayla: He’s downstairs. Wait. At least bring him a sandwich.
Hope runs downstairs and into the Bridge where Bo is studying the navigational dials. He lifts his head and sees Hope. She has a look on her face that he hasn’t seen in a year.
Bo: Hope! What’s ... Hope: Shut up, Brady. She puts her arms around him and kisses him hard. Once the shock wears off, he puts his arms around her and they spend the next few minutes kissing.
Hope: You really do still love me, don’t you? Bo: It’s about time you figured that out. Hope: I know. I’m sorry. Bo: What are you sorry for? Hope: For making things harder than they needed to be. Bo: You don’t need to apologize. I’m the one who ... She kisses him again. Hope: Can we start over, Brady? Bo: We can do anything you want, Fancy Face. Whatever we imagine.
