Daniel’s Examining Room at Salem University Hospital
Daniel: Good morning Kayla. What can I do for you? Kayla: I... I just wanted to see how your case load is. Is everything under control? Daniel: Absolutely. But thanks for asking.
Kayla: [Leaves Daniel’s office, stands outside the door and says to herself] I can’t just go in there and start making accusations. I have to be smart about this. I have to get proof, and I know exactly where to start.
[Kayla returns to her office and logs onto her computer. She looks up Daniel’s patient files and prints out a list of his patients for the past year. She heads over to Bo and Hope’s house.]
Chelsea: Hi Aunt Kayla. Hope is upstairs putting Ciara down for a nap. I’ll tell her you’re here. Kayla: Before you go, Chelsea, I want to ask you something. Chelsea: Sure. Kayla: It’s about Daniel Jonas. Chelsea: I’d rather not talk about him. Kayla: I understand, but my question is about Daniel as a doctor. Chelsea: Oh. What do you want to know? Kayla: When he was treating you, did you ever feel...uncomfortable? Chelsea: Do you mean did I have pain from the surgery? Kayla: No, I mean, did you ever feel he was anything less than professional. Chelsea: Well, he did flirt with me like crazy. Kayla: Did that make you uncomfortable? Chelsea: Heck no. It was a mutual attraction. I liked it. It was exciting. [Hope comes downstairs.]
Hope: Kay. I wasn’t expecting you. Chelsea: I gotta run. See you guys later. Hope: Is everything okay? Kayla: I have a professional dilemma. Hope: Can I help? Kayla: Not really, unless.... Hope, did you ever see Daniel Jonas professionally? Did he ever examine you? Hope: No. He was Bo’s doctor. Kayla: I know. Bo was his first patient in Salem. Hmmm, I wonder…. Hope: Wonder what? Kayla: Nothing. Nevermind. Tell me, Hope, what do you think of Daniel as a doctor? Hope: I have nothing but good things to say about him. He saved Bo’s life. Chelsea’s too. Kayla: Did it ever bother you that he was both Chelsea’s doctor and her boyfriend? Hope: What bothered me was the age difference. In fact, it drove Bo nuts. But we played it cool, the relationship ran its course, and it’s history now. Why are you asking all these questions about Daniel? Kayla: It’s no big deal. I’m...um...I’m preparing my annual evaluations of the staff and I’m trying to get the full picture of all my doctors.
[Outside of Hope’s house, Kayla opens her file folder, looks at the next patient on the list, and heads over to the Dimera mansion.]

The Dimera Mansion
Rolf: May I help you, Madam? Kayla: Yes, I’d like to speak to Mrs. Dimera. Rolf: Please wait in the all-purpose room.
[Nicole enters] Nicole: Kayla! I wasn’t expecting you. What can I do for you? Kayla: Nicole, you look well. How’s the baby? Nicole: Little Lisa Marie is doing great. Keeping me up half the night, but those are the joys of motherhood. I don’t have to tell you about motherhood though, do I? [Kayla zones out and flashes back to Stephanie telling her about Daniel’s examination.]
Kayla: I wanted to ask you about Dr. Jonas. You’re one of his patients, and I’d like to know what you think of him. Nicole: I think he’s the best. If it weren’t for Daniel, I wouldn’t have my little miracle baby. He saved her life. Why are you asking? Kayla: I’m preparing my annual evaluations of the staff and I wanted to get the patients’ perspective… So you’d give Dr. Jonas high marks?
[Nicole has a flashback in which she is getting dressed after being examined by Daniel. He comes back into the examining room.] Nicole: What the hell was that all about? Daniel: What are you talking about? Nicole: That examination. It was more like a date at a drive-in movie than a medical examination. You violated me! Daniel: Now, that’s a little dramatic, don’t you think? Nicole: Dramatic? You haven’t seen dramatic yet. I’m reporting you to the hospital board. Daniel: I don’t think you’re going to do that, Nicole. Nicole: Don’t bet on it. Actually, you won’t have to worry about going before the board once EJ and Stefano find out about this. You’ll be swimming with the fishes in no time. Daniel: How’s that little miracle baby of yours? Nicole: Um. Daniel: If you recall, you came to me and begged me to save your baby. You said you’d do ANYTHING if I would only save your baby. Nicole: Oh my gosh. Are you saying….? Daniel: That’s right. I did what you wanted. Now it’s your turn to do what I want. And I want you to make a standing appointment every week at this same time. Nicole: You can’t be serious! Daniel: I’ll see you next week, Mrs. Dimera.
[Nicole returns to her conversation with Kayla] Nicole: High marks, yes! All A’s and B’s. Kayla: Well, that’s what I like to hear. Thank you for your time, Nicole. Good-bye.

The Horton Cabin on Smith Island
Chloe: Come on in, Kayla. How was your trip over? Kayla: Great. It’s so much faster getting here now that they’ve finally finished building the Thomas Horton Memorial Causeway. Chloe: I know. Memorial runs right into the seaport. It takes only 10 minutes to get to downtown now. So, what’s going on? Kayla: I want to talk to you about your relationship with Dr. Jonas. Chloe: Excuse me? Kayla: I mean your doctor-patient relationship. Would you say he behaves in a professional manner? Chloe: I guess so. Kayla: Do you have any complaints about him? Chloe: No, he’s very good at what he does. Kayla: Can you elaborate?
[Chloe flashes back to the first time Daniel examined her. Then she has another flashback to the first time Daniel examined her. One more flashback to that first examination. Then she remembers the red teddy episode, the hand-smashing in the door, the taping of the fingers, New Year’s Eve on the pier, the sex fantasy she had, etc., etc.] Chloe: He’s got an amazing bedside manner. He’s very gentle yet thorough. He’s a hard man not to like. Kayla: So, no problems, no complaints. Chloe: Nope. I’m very happy with the way he handles me.
[Later that day at the Kiriakis Mansion] Kayla: I hope you don't mind that I came without calling first. Kate: Of course I don’t mind. You and I are future inlaws. What can I do for you? Kayla: I’m here about Daniel. Kate: What about Daniel? Kayla: I was just wondering how the two of you happened to get together. Was it when he was treating you for that condition I can’t pronounce? Kate: It was around that time. Why? Kayla: Was it before you were his patient, or after? Kate: I’ve known Daniel for a long while. He’s Victor’s godson. We merely became better acquainted while he was treating Bo, then Chelsea, then Victor, then me. You still haven’t told me why you’re asking all these questions. Kayla: It’s just routine. I’m working on staff evaluations. How would you rate Daniel as a doctor? Kate: I’d give him a 10. He saved my life. He saves everyone’s life. Kayla: No complaints? Kate: None. Kayla: Well, thank you for your time. Say, is Victor at home? I have something I want to ask him.

The Kiriakis Mansion
Victor: Kayla, it’s good to see you. Kayla: I have something I need to ask you, Victor. Victor: If you’re worried about financing for Philip and Stephanie’s wedding, you needn’t fret. Even though it’s customary for the bride’s parents to pay for the wedding, I’m more than happy to foot the bill, especially since no one is sure whether or not your husband is gainfully employed. Kayla: I appreciate that Victor. Truly. But my question is about Dr. Jonas. You’ve known him for a very long time, right? Victor: Yes, his father was a close friend of mine. Kayla: I know you didn’t like him dating Chelsea. And then, of course, Kate. Victor: That’s PERSONAL business, Kayla. Kayla: I understand that, but... Victor: I don’t know why you are asking me these questions, Kayla, and something tells me that I really don’t want to know. You and I are about to become inlaws. As such, I am going to pretend we never had this conversation. Good day, Dr. Johnson.
[Later at the Johnson Apartment]
Stephanie: You look exhausted, Mama. Are you alright? Kayla: I’m fine. Just a little discouraged is all. Stephanie: No luck with your investigation? Kayla: Not yet. It amazes me how much everyone loves Daniel. Most of the people I interviewed would give him the Doctor of the Year award if they could. Stephanie: Suppose I filed a complaint with the board… Kayla: No. Absolutely not. We’ve discussed this already. Stephanie: But… Kayla: No buts. I won’t let you go through that again, baby girl. The subject is closed. All I need is one person who will come forward and tell the truth about Dr. Jonas. Stephanie: That reminds me. A letter came for you in the mail today. [Kayla opens the letter and reads it] Stephanie: What is it, Mama? Kayla: It’s a petition. It’s signed by 5,396 Days of Our Lives fans who say “I am soooooo disgusted….Go away Daniel!” It seems they want him to pack up his surf board and go back to where he came from. Stephanie: That’s great news, Mama! That should give us the ammunition we need. Kayla: Unfortunately, I doubt if it’s admissible in a court of law. But it does give me the encouragement I need to continue the fight. Except I can't do it alone anymore.

Dimera Law Offices
EJ: How can I help you, Dr. Johnson? Kayla: I need an attorney. EJ: I thought Mickey Horton was your attorney. Kayla: Well, he is, but he is also on the hospital board and this case requires an unbiased third party. EJ: I see. Tell me about the case. Kayla: One of our doctors has been accused of improper conduct. EJ: A malpractice case. Kayla: No, I’m talking about sexual assault. EJ: I see. And you want me to defend this doctor. Kayla: No, I want to prove his guilt. The hospital’s reputation is at stake. EJ: This sounds like a case I can get my teeth into. I’ll take it. Who’s the doctor? Kayla: Daniel Jonas. EJ: Really? Dr. Jonas? Who is making the accusation? Kayla: This is off the record, EJ. It’s my daughter Stephanie. EJ: Doctor, it can’t be off the record. Without her complaint we have no case. Kayla: I’m not sure if you remember Ford Decker? EJ: Ah, yes, I do remember. Kayla: So you see why I can’t let her go through that again. EJ: That could make our case tougher. Kayla: I’m sorry, but it’s just not negotiable. EJ: I see. Can you get me access to his patient files? Kayla: I have them here. But you should know that many of his female patients swear he’s the best doctor ever. Many of these are also patients who have had or are having a personal relationship with the doctor ... women who started out as his patients and ended up as his lovers. EJ: I’ve never shied away from a challenge, Dr. Johnson. I will come up with evidence. Kayla: I hope so. I have an appointment back at the hospital, so I have to go now. Let me know what else you need.
[Kayla goes back to her office at Salem University Hospital] Mary Beth: Dr. Johnson.... Kayla: Yes, Mary Beth? Mary Beth: You asked me to let you know if Dr. Jonas gets any new patients. Well, here’s the file on his newest patient. Kayla: Thank you Mary Beth. [Looks inside the folder] Oh no!

Salem University Hospital Mary Beth: Dr. Johnson.... Kayla: Yes, Mary Beth? Mary Beth: You asked me to let you know if Dr. Jonas gets any new patients. Well, here’s the file on his newest patient. Kayla: Thank you Mary Beth. [Looks inside the folder] Oh no! Caroline: Kayla honey. I’m surprised to see you in the middle of the day. Is everything alright? Kayla: Yes Mom, fine. I was looking for Melanie. Caroline: I can’t keep track of that girl. Even though she lives here, I never know when or even if she’s going to be home. She’s a wild child, that Melanie. Kayla: Well, I’ll just wait here for a bit if that’s okay. Caroline: Of course! I’ll fix you a bowl of chowder.
[Melanie arrives] Kayla: Melanie, I’d like to speak to you for a minute. Melanie: Oh goodie. Well I’m a really busy corporate executive, you know, and time is money. I make about $1,000 a minute. Kayla: Well then, let’s just say we’re off the clock. I understand that Daniel Jonas is your doctor now. What do you think of him? Melanie: I think he’s hot. Kayla: I mean, what do you think of him as a doctor. What did you think of the way you were treated during the examination? Melanie: I liked it a lot. You could say I was quite satisfied. Kayla: I guess I should have expected that. Melanie: Hmm, why are you asking? Kayla: Just routine. I’m doing staff evaluations and.... Melanie: Really? I think your question is a little more than routine, Dr. Johnson. And I can probably help you out, but only if you tell me what you’re really after. Kayla: Okay, I’ll level with you. There have been some questions about Dr. Jonas’ ethics, and I am trying to find out if there is any truth to the allegations. Melanie: Dr. Johnson, I like Dr. Jonas. But, you know me, I want justice to be served. I will say anything you want me to. Kayla: For what price, Melanie? Melanie: I think you need a more diverse group of people on the hospital board instead of just that Old Boy network. Kayla: Julie Williams is on the board.... Melanie: Old Boy, Old Girl, whatever. You need some new blood on the board. Kayla: What’s in it for you? Melanie: More money, more power, position in the community. Kayla: [sighs] Fine, tell me what you know about Daniel.

Two Weeks Later at the Dimera Mansion
EJ: This is a tough case, Dr. Johnson. As you know, we have only one person who is willing to step forward and testify against Dr. Jonas, and that’s Melanie Layton. Unfortunately, she’s not the most credible witness. It would help if Stephanie would come forward too. Kayla: I told you EJ, I won’t let her do it. Not after what happened with Ford Decker. EJ: Yes, that’s right. Because of her previous history, the defense would rip her testimony to shreds. They would call it a pattern, turn the tables on her, and make her into the villain instead of the victim. Kayla: I can’t let her go through that again, EJ. What are we going to do? EJ: If we only had one more testimony, it would make a world of difference. Kayla: I know. But we have got to stop this monster from preying on his patients. Whatever it takes, we’ve got to stop him. Listen, I have another appointment that I have to get to. I’ll call you tomorrow. [exits]
[Nicole enters] Nicole: EJ, I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation with Kayla. EJ: Darling, you know that we were speaking under attorney-client privilege. You’ll have to forget what you heard. Nicole: I can’t. EJ: What do you mean? Nicole: I think I can help with your case. EJ: How? Oh my heavens, don’t tell me.... You and Dr. Jonas? Nicole [sobbing]: He saved our baby. He was blackmailing me. I had no choice, EJ. It’s been horrible. I’m so sorry. EJ [comforting Nicole]: It alright, darling. It’s over now. We’ll take care of Dr. Jonas.

Salem Courthouse
Judge Fitzpatrick: The testimonies I have heard here today from Melanie Layton and Nicole Dimera make me ill. You violated the public’s trust, Dr. Jonas. You violated your Hippocratic Oath. And what makes me even more ill is the fact that the testimonies were all anecdotal. We have no hard evidence. We have only the prosecution saying one thing and the defense denying it.
I’d like to take your license away, Dr. Jonas. I’d like to put you behind bars, and throw away the key for 70 years to life. I’d like to castrate you. Unfortunately, the law will not allow it. I must adhere to the letter of the law and all I can do is to restrain you from practicing medicine in this city ever again. You will pack up your belongings and vacate Salem University Hospital by tomorrow morning. Please feel free to leave our fair city, Dr. Jonas, but tell the Court where you are going next. I want to warn the good people of the next town where you take up residence. This hearing is adjourned.
[Later that day at the Pier] Nick: Philip, thank you for getting me sprung from prison. If you ever need anything…. Philip: As a matter of fact, I do. Nick: Oh? Philip: I need you to arrange an accidental murder. Nick: Who’s the target? Philip: Daniel Jonas. Nick: Daniel? What did he do? Philip: My mother. Chloe. And the last straw … Stephanie.
[Later that day at the Dimera Mansion] Stefano [talking on the phone]: I don’t care how you do it, you idiot! I want him taken care of permanently! That’s right. Dr. Daniel Jonas.
[Later that evening at the Johnson apartment.] Kayla: Steve, could you watch baby Joey for a few hours? I have something I need to take care of.

Salem University Hospital Mary Beth: Good morning, Dr. Johnson. Wow, you’re here extra early today. Here’s the duty roster for the day. Kayla: Thank you, Mary Beth. Are you going off shift now? Mary Beth: Soon. I have to deliver these surgery schedules first. Kayla: But, you must be exhausted after being on the overnight shift. I’ll take care of it. Mary Beth: You’re the Chief of Staff, Dr. Johnson. We can’t have you delivering surgery schedules. It won’t take me long. See you tomorrow. [Mary Beth goes across the hall and enters Daniel’s examining room to give him his surgery schedule. She sees Daniel lying on the examining table with his legs in stirrups. He is naked and dead.] The End To read the sequel to this story, go to: Appointment With a Killer
