Do you write the next chapter after you post? Or do you have it all written and post every so often?

For me you are reading a work in progress. If you were to wait for me to complete my story before posting it would probably take over a year.
I fully outline my stories and use that outline as a blueprint for my chapters. I at times write out of sequence so I may be on chapter 10 but my muse wants to write something for chapter 20, so what I do is just let my muse run wild and put those out of order scenes where they go within the outline.
I like writing fanfiction/or posting my stories for an audience, because the feedback fuels my creative energy. When readers are interested, it helps me stay focused and on task so that I actually finish the story. Many writers have incomplete manuscripts under the bed (so to speak) and I think posting chapters online really helps to combat those blocks.
I used to write for other fandoms and I usually would update my stories once every two weeks, sometimes once a month, and in those fandoms that is the norm. It is definitely a challenge posting here where people are updating daily. I'm just not that fast of a writer, I like to tweak and change many times before committing. I like that posting at MH has forced me to just write and let things go sooner than I normally would have. Undertow is an exercise for me...a practice piece...a very long one (LOL)...and I think posting it here has helped me a great deal.

Great question Minako. I write the entire story before I post the first chapter. I tend to tweak it some along the way, but essentially it's written in advance. That way I am able to make changes to the early chapters if there's something that I realized I forgot to cover or want to add when I get to the later chapters. Confession: For the first time ever, my current story, Sunsets, was not completed when I started posting it. I fell behind in my writing and I didn't want to have a posting gap between stories because you guys tell me you don't want me to skip a day. It's completely written now though. I at times write out of sequence so I may be on chapter 10 but my muse wants to write something for chapter 20, so what I do is just let my muse run wild and put those out of order scenes where they go within the outline. I do that too. I write out of sequence and I "sew" the story together, also known as connecting the dots, later.

Bumping this thread so others authors have the opportunity to see it and respond.

I don't consider myself an author - I only really wrote one complete story (in 4 parts). But, when I did write it, I wrote an outline for story 1 (what would happen in each chapter, making sure it would last at least two weeks) then I wrote it out, then I posted it. Then I moved on to the next part of the whole - outline, write, release. Each part was finished before it was released. Not sure if that's what you're looking for but that's what I did.

Minako, are you thinking of writing a fan fic? I know myself I have written part of one, when I was stuck home & couldn't walk, & never finished it..

@ SG - Oh Hell no. I couldn't even begin to write like our authors here. @ DD - I do consider you an author. You wrote a wonderful story. I asked the question because I was curious as to how our writers work. It correlates to how often people post if they write as they go or have it all written. I am truly amazed at how awesome our writers are.

It needs a lot of editing and too much time has passed for it's significance. I'd rather leave it up to the pros.... & I agree with Minoko DD, you are an author!!! Loved your story!

We're not pro's either SG, meaning we don't get paid. Maybe you'll feel inspired another day. I also agree with Minako and SG, DD. Just because you haven't written a fanfic in a while doesn't make you any less an author.

When I first started writing fanfic (in another fandom), I would never post a story until it was finished. With Days, that hasn't been the case, though I always have tried to stay a number of posts ahead of what I am posting just in case I hit a period of writer's block. I hate leaving unfinished fics out there and I have one that I need to go back to after esp13 and I finish Collateral Damage. That story is suffering a bit of a block at the moment, but we have a pretty extensive outline of what comes next so I'm sure it will be completed.

I asked the question because I was curious as to how our writers work. It correlates to how often people post if they write as they go or have it all written. Anyone reading my stories DO NOT expect daily updates. That will never happen. All of my chapters go through at least 3 phases before posting, that usually takes a few days if I work on it consistently, and there are many days when I don't feel like writing at all...so yeah...NO DAILY UPDATES. I also think if I wrote a story in advance I would just post it all at once. I don't have the patience to come back every day and post it bit by bit when I am not working on it. I know when I did those daily posts during the Olympics it drove me nuts. I just wanted to post it all and leave.

I wasn't trying to imply that anyone should post everyday.
Like I said, I was just curious as to how you all work a story.
