Angst whore in the house...can't read a story without it - definitely can't write one.
My friend just told me she can't take angst and extreme drama and likes her stories light and carefree, complete with a happily ever after.
I, on the other hand, am all about bittersweet. And I remember the sad endings most of all.
Where do you stand? Angst lover or hater or somewhere in between?
What's the angstiest story you've ever read/watched?
On soaps Elizabeth and Jason on GH are pure angst, you have to be strong to ship them. My favorite movie is Gone With The Wind - bittersweet ending...Loved Wuthering Heights....

I like a moderate amount of angst, but like we were saying in another thread, I want a real love story. So many soaps mess with the couple before they even get going that it's hard to invest in them. So angst is fine, it's what makes the story interesting, but I want a happy ending. Not necessarily a sappy ending, but a satisfying ending.

I am kind of in between. I like the angst, but I need some happiness too. I don't watch any other soaps so I have nothing to compare it too. Nicholas Sparks is a good one, it is a romance, but usually his books have a bittersweet ending.

I like angst in stories that I read. I like it when a story actually gives you a reason to root for one pairing over another. Or to root for or against one single pairing. I hate stories where the characters relationships are manufactured - no feelings attached at all just *BAM* thrown together for no reason to create some trouble or to create a resolution with no explanation. I need the build up, the back story to all of it. I want to feel what the characters are feeling.
I don't necessarily have to have a "happy" ending, but when I get to the end of the story, I want to feel like I understand the result. If a pairing doesn't work, I want to see the turmoils they faced to reach that point but I also want to see along the way the good times & why they are/were together. I want to know WHY they came to the decision they did - good or bad. I don't want a fairy tale story where everyone is just so happy and nothing is wrong with the world and they don't face any money troubles, rough marriage spots, etc. The angst doesn't have to be the "rip your heart out, leaving you with chest heaving sobs" kind (although it does make for a good read). If I want angst free, I'll go read one of my kids Grimm's Fairy Tales books.
I also hate quick ending stories - "as they made their way out of the harbor on that brightly moonlight night - the bomb goes off. THE END". Sorry, but there are better ways to leave a cliffhanging ending than that.

A couple you root for needs angst along the way to make that final get together more exciting.
But if the show is based mostly on that romance, then happiness can be deadly. The TV show Moonlighting was great because of the angst between Cybil Shepherd' Maddie & Bruce Willis's character. When they finally were put together, the show tanked and was cancelled.

Sometimes people come into your life for a short time but still impact it, or sometimes even with the best of intentions things just don't work out and the love can't sustain.

Whether a story is angst filled or not, I want an ending that ends with some happiness and satisfaction. If it involves a love story then I want to see a love story play out angst and all. I don't like to feel like my time was wasted whether it was watching a movie or reading a story.

How about stories where someone dies at the end?

I don't mind if they die in the end if they have found at least a moment of happiness. Message in a Bottle is a good example. Again, Nicholas Sparks. I don't like if someone dies unhappy or leaves the person that loves them before they realize happiness together, if that makes any sense.

I'm kinda on the fence about death too. On one hand, I do want the people to find happiness with each before one passes, but some times, it takes the death to make some people realize what was staring them in the face yet they ignored and took it for granted. That that person would always be there for them no matter how bad they treated them or abused their friendship. In sudden death situations, there really can't be any happiness between the two. It would have to be a drawn out sickness or one person being comatose in order to give the other person time to realize their feelings.

Well anyone who has read my stuff knows I use illness/near death to make characters get real, get brave, face their feelings etc. I pitched killing off a character to my beta....I was called evil. LOL
I kind of like sad endings though.
