Good for him! I can attest that every citizen should be prepared to have at least 3 weeks of supplies on hand in the case of natural disaster - it will take the government at least that long to respond. That's not a dig at the government - it's personal experience. That's how long it took for non-urban areas affected by Hurricane Katrina to be reached. While there was lots of public outcry about the one week it took for New Orleans, it was closer to a month for areas with less media coverage. Not that the media ever bothered to highlight the success of those small, local governments in responding. You can bet if they hadn't rescued and cared for the people affected there everyone on the planet would have heard about it, but since they managed on their own just fine for weeks, nada (and that is a dig at the media).

Exactly Kazz, I felt unprepared when we were hit with Hurricane Ike...Now we are better prepared, except we need to eventually get a generator... wish we had the money....

We have a generator and we keep many gallons of gasoline for it locked up when it's hurricane season. When Gustave hit a few years back we were without electricity for 11 days but we were prepared to the point that we were grilling enough steaks served with cold beers to share with the neighbors. A generator is definitely worth the investment in the long run ... not just so there isn't a loss on groceries each time but it also helps with things like being able to keep our neighbors' insulin and other such meds refrigerated. We can't run the air conditioner with it (well we can but it goes through too much fuel) but we can run fans and that makes a big difference for elderly relatives and neighbors.
