THE KITCHEN
Chloe was unloading the dishwasher and Wesley was watching a video in the kitchen. Chloe glanced at Philip as he came toward her, but she was careful not to meet his gaze because she knew she was just a nanosecond from bursting into tears. She tried to sound upbeat as she engaged Philip in light banter.
Chloe: Do you have to wear your uniform?
Philip: Why? Don’t you like the way I look in it?
Chloe: You look amazing.
Philip: Thanks. I figured it would turn you on.
Chloe: It does. I’m just afraid it might make you more of a target.
Philip: A target for women?
Chloe finally looked Philip in the eye. She went over to him and fingered the placket of the light brown shirt Philip was wearing under the dark brown uniform.
Chloe: For some reason, I prefer seeing you out of uniform, Lieutenant Kiriakis. Would I get arrested if I ripped your shirt off?
Philip: Probably not arrested, but the shirt is government-issue, so you’d have to pay a huge fine.
Chloe smiled slyly.
Chloe: It would be so worth it.
Philip: Sweetie ...
Chloe let go of Philip’s shirt as if it were on fire.
Chloe: Don’t say it.
Philip: Don’t say what?
Chloe: Don’t say ... goodbye. I can’t ... I can’t say goodbye to you.
Philip looked at her for a few moments, and his heart broke at the sight of Chloe covering her tear-streaked face with her hands. He went over to Wesley and lifted him up in his arms. He kissed his son and rubbed his face against the boy’s smooth cheek.
Philip: Be a good boy, Wes. Take care of your Mama until I get back, okay big guy?
Wesley: Okay big guy. Take care of Mama.
Philip squeezed Wesley, then put him back down and turned to Chloe, but she wasn’t there anymore. He walked into the living room and she wasn’t there either. It took a minute for him to figure out where she was, before he went out onto the veranda. He started walking toward her.
Chloe: Just go, Philip. Just leave. I can’t ...
Philip: Sweetie, it’s only ...
Chloe: I know, you told me a hundred times. It’s only two or three weeks, it’s just like a business trip. But something about it feels so ... so final.
Philip: Don’t be silly. I’ll call you every day.
Chloe: Don’t call me silly. It’s condescending.
Philip: Sorry.
Chloe: And don’t look at me that way.
Philip: What way?
Chloe: Like ... you can see into my soul.
Philip: Hey, come here.
Chloe: No, I told you I can’t say it ...
Philip: And I can’t leave without saying goodbye to you.
Chloe: Good. Then don’t leave.
Philip: Chloe.
Chloe: I’m sorry. I’m sorry for acting like a child again. I should be brave, but I’m not.
Philip: Blame it on the hormones.
Chloe laughed through her tears.
Chloe: That's my line.
Philip: Come here.
Chloe put her arms around Philip’s waist as he wrapped her tightly in his embrace. They held each other close for several minutes. Philip gently pushed her back and looked at her like he was trying to memorize the moment to recall later.
Philip: I love you.
Chloe’s voice caught in her throat and she could only manage to nod her head. Philip leaned his face toward hers and their lips met in several long, last kisses. Philip cupped her cheek and smiled at her before turning away. He went back into the house and, a minute later, Chloe heard the car driving away. From inside the car, Philip looked back at the house. He saw the porch light and made a mental note to replace the bulb when he gets home.

Boy am I in tears now. That was the saddest goodbye I have ever read. Something tells me that there is going to be a problem because Philip did not change the light. Thanks for the chapter Kpatch.

What a sweet parting. PLEASE have Phillip come home soon and keep Chloe safe. DO NOT LET her attempt to change the light bulb!!

Soo sad. I really liked the fun banter about Philip's uniform. I feel so bad for Chloe being so far along in her pregnancy and having Philip leaving on his mission. |
