Gabi is preparing a special dinner to celebrate Rafe’s return to Commissioner. Jada arrives and breaks the news that she has been given the Commissioner role. Gabi is sure that Rafe will not be happy with the demotion. Jada admits that she likes being Commissioner. Gabi advises Jada to be honest with Rafe.
Rafe arrives home. Jada tells him that she likes being Commissioner. Rafe, in turn, admits he hates being demoted. He is quitting the force.

Days getting political. Not bad. Gabi hinting at the female/racial angle (even spelled it out saying town's first female black commissioner) and I thought for a minute they would go at it.
But Jada was clearly faking it with Rafe. She wants to be boss.
Small aside. Salem is a hamlet (forget the fancy cityscape shots). So Police Commissioner does NOT register. That is for a sprawling metropolis. I don't know who the hell came up with that anyway but "Police Chief" rings truer.
Very funny moment the way Jada half cheerfully told Gabi Rafe was going to be a detective. Which of course set Gabi off.
My problem is Jada was a horrible Chief. Brutal. She never figured anything out and her instincts were practically nil. Just disgusted in her incompetence. By the book fool who couldn't think outside the box as people were getting tortured, injured and or murdered right under her nose
But I was sort of pleased Rafe didn't go the sue the city route, although maybe he will. Quitting seemed right although what will he do now. Private Eye stuff?
Gabi mentioned Latino machismo. Hum. I heard that right after OUR election. This was taped way before the election, but their conversation seemed very up to date in a political sense.

Maybe Rafe will join in with Black Patch if he quits the police force? Steve's going to need some help and Galen (Rafe) needs the chance to have more of a story than just a demoted detective having to take orders from Jada.
I did like in his conversation with Roman that it's not that he has a problem taking orders from a female - look at him and Hope.

Actually, I thought Rafe was horrible when Hope was named Commissioner. He was frequently condescending and second guessing her. It felt like part of what ended their incredibly boring relationship.

This was my thought too as soon as Rafe said he was quitting the force. It would have been a more intriguing story if he followed Roman's advice and sued the City, setting up conflict between Rafe and Jada.
