This goes back and forth between so many characters and they keep interacting, so hard to break into smaller posts.
Nicole is chastising EJ about his pathetic ‘apology’ to Tate. She rightfully guesses he wanted to bury the whole thing. She asks if he is even sorry about locking up Tate, or just embarrassed at having to apologize. EJ complains he is way too busy for this, he just came from a hearing regarding the ‘Stefen Fiasco’. He has no time or interest in dealing with the press. He tries to leave. Too late, says Xander, the press is here. Chad is there too, he tells EJ he is about to eat some crow.
EJ says too late, press conference is over. He made a lovely apology to ‘Master Black’ and is now discussing how well it went with his wife. Chad says that is bull and he knows it. Xander says he is unbelievable, starting the press conference early to avoid the press. Chad says it is not a good look, DA DiMera. EJ calls him ‘news boy’ and tells him to get out of his way. Xander reminds him he is a civil servant now and as members of the press of the city he serves, they have a few questions. More than a few, says Chad.
Nicole is bored and starts checking her phone. Xander asks was an apology issued to Tate and his parents. EJ says “An apology was given. The family was here. The matter is resolved”. Xander thinks there must be more to it than that, he wants the details. Chad sneaks off to talk to Nicole. He asks if she doesn’t want to be there when her husband is getting grilled. Nicole says that is not her job, he runs his own office. Chad wonders why he would start the press conference early. Nicole says she has no idea. She isn’t interested in talking about it. Chad asks about Holly. Nicole says she is ok and back at school. She is at a crossroads, she has been taking care of Holly, thought she would be taking care of her baby boy, and now doesn’t know what to do with herself. Apparently she has quit or been let go from Basic Black.
Back to EJ and Xander: Xander wants to know if the family was satisfied with his apology. EJ lies that they were, completely, and tries to go. Xander has more questions: What about Detective Michaels? Any progress on finding his shooter or who set him up? (Harris and Ava appear and lurk around listening at this point). EJ says that the Salem PD investigation is ongoing and his office will update Xander on any developments. Xander spots Harris and drags him into the conversation. Xander asks “Any leads? Any progress finding the actual shooter?” Harris mumbles something pushing the issue back to Rafe, while Ava looks uncomfortable. Xander then brings up Clyde, wondering how that search is going. EJ says they have initiated a nationwide manhunt. “A be on the look out is a nation wide manhunt?” scoffs Xander. EJ says all tips and leads will be investigated. Ava complains she doesn’t like this and drags Harris away for coffee. EJ and Xander glare at each other.
Ava apologizes to poor Harris for being put on the spot by Xander. Harris has a moment of clarity and says that Xander has a right to know who set him up and his shooter is his link to finding out. Ava blames herself. Harris says it is on Clyde. Ava agrees but says he still covered for her. Harris says he used Stefan to help her and he would do it again. He calls Stefan a little weasel but he was under Clyde’s control, just like Ava was.
Chad has rejoined the hammering of EJ. He has a recording device. EJ is still trying to leave. Chad wants to know how much time he is recommending that Stefan serve as part of his plea deal, considering they are family the nepotism and conflict of interest would be very interesting for the Spectator readers. EJ points out that Chad is also family, isn’t that also conflict of interest. He tells Chad that the hearing for Stefan happened that morning and while his attorney gave it her best go he is confident that Stefen will serve time for distributing narcotics to Salem and the surrounding areas. Stefan strolls up, “Actually, I already have” he smirks. Nicole looks furious. Harris has some sort of facial expression but it is the same one he always has.
Stefan apologizes to EJ for stealing his thunder. Stefan says he is a free man. EJ pretends to be upset and takes off, Xander still hollering questions at him regarding him probably advocating for Stefan’s release. Chad pouts that he is not going to answer and they should talk to Stefan. Xander asks if Chad needs him, as he has somewhere he needs to be. Chad says he has got it and thanks him for coming. I’m liking them as coworkers and dare I say, near friends. Both of them can use somebody their own age to talk to. Xander confides that his motivation for coming was to grill EJ about who set him up, but he doesn’t seem very interested in finding out who is behind it, or who shot Michaels. Chad says he will let him know if he finds out anything. Xander walks by Nicole, who is glaring at Stefan and saying to nobody in particular: “This is unbelievable!”. Xander tells Stefan he will catch up with him later. Chad is over his bonding with Stefan: “So you wormed your way out of prison. How’d you pull that off?”. Nicole calls him an SOB and tells him to start talking. Harris and Ava continue to nervously lurk and observe, clutching their cups.
EJ is not out of the woods yet, as he takes off Harris and Ava block him. Harris is furious that EJ let Stefan go free. EJ counters that he covered up the ID of his own shooter to cover for ‘this slippery snake’ (Ava). He tells Harris he will live to regret that. Ava: “Speaking of which. How is Susan doing these days?”. EJ does not appreciate that reference and glowers off.
Back with Nicole and the other Dimera brothers. Stefan wants to know what her problem is. Nicole says he is her problem, and her daughter’s problem. He put those pills on the street that almost killed her. Stefan tells her he feels terrible about what happened to Holly and he only allowed the drugs to be picked up on the docks due to the threat of bodily harm to his wife. He had no idea the drugs were laced with opioids. He did what he did to protect Gabi, and he is so sorry. Nicole says he should be apologizing to Holly, but she doesn’t want him anywhere near her. Stefan reminds her they live in the same house. EJ returns to say that Stefan shouldn’t count on that. Nicole runs off with Chad in pursuit. She wonders how ‘that loser’ can be free after what he did. She says that she feels for him about Gabi, but he could have told EJ or the police before agreeing to help Clyde. Oh, but he DID Nicole….Chad tells her that Stefan thinks he can handle everything on his own. He apologizes to Nicole, it is his family and this should never have happened. Nicole says he is the opposite of his family, he even wrote that article about Stefan being involved in the drug ring. Chad says that Everett wrote that story, not him. But you published it, and didn’t have to, says Nicole, you put your family’s dirty laundry in the headlines, and that speaks to your integrity. Chad demurs that he has made his own fair share of mistakes. Nicole has too. Chad did the right thing. Nicole remembers when she was a TV reporter and having to make tough calls. Chad did not know about this part of her job history. Nicole rhapsodizes about how much she loved it, chasing stories and figuring out how to tell them. Every day was exciting! This feels like a job interview.

When Chad was questioning Nicole, I wanted to know if it was on the record or off the record.
Nicole is blaming Stefan for peddling tainted drugs to Holly...even though Holly took drugs of her own free will and no one is acknowledging that fact.

Also, did it strike anyone else as strange when Nicole said she's been taking care of Holly for a year when...
1. It was 3-1/2 months ago when Holly overdosed. 2. Nicole's been Holly's mom for 17 years, so shouldn't she have been taking care of Holly for 17 years, more or less?

But Nicole has only been taking care of Holly since October since we never really saw her prior to that.

I thought it was odd that it seemed like The Bistro was open. Huh?
Best part for me was watching Ava and Harris lurking around (see Thread Starter Ha) recoiling as they watched Stefan prance in. I thought it was subversively funny, but I have a strange sense of humor.
That said how the hell did Stefan get released? Out of thin air it seems. I don't recall hearing a proper explanation. And since he kills nearly every scene, he is in. I wasn't thrilled to see him reappear in public.

Yesterday the judge said that she would consider EJ's weak defense and Sloan's strong one that Stefan get time served. Stefan delivered the info that she had ultimately decided in his favour today. I also enjoyed lurking Ava and Harris. I hate them both so it is nice to see them squirm
