Why do you think they’re sending the teens (Tate and Holly) offscreen?

The most likely reason is something to do with the strike. I remember reading that, despite the fact that the New Year's party had an abundance of people, normally the show can only afford 12 to 14 major characters per episode. Meaning that some storylines have to occasionally be put on hold in favor of others. And because of the strike last year (remember, Days films usually 6, but sometimes up to 8 or 9 months in advance), several storylines will be spinning their wheels for quite some time. Even though throughout that period we got scab writers, I'm not sure how much creative freedom they were allowed to have, or how much storyline progression we'll see.

It will be interesting to see how long we go without seeing Holly and Tate for now. Also, I wonder that once Holly returns, does that mean that Nicole will also return?

Sort of like Dmitri was sent offscreen for a while.
I would imagine Nicole will be back long before Holly is. Maybe she finds out something about her baby boy that sends her back to Salem while Holly remains in Italy.

I forgot about the strike. I just figured it had something to do with their schedules or something.
and honestly, I'm ok with the hiatus. Tate and Holly have been on repeat for a while now with Holly being nasty to Tate because she couldn't have Johnny. And Tate, being just a love-sick begging puppy dog (like his dad) was following her along. Maybe this will give them a chance to reset and maybe when Holly does come back, she's forgotten about this crush of hers on Johnny.

Yeah, I think it's to put that story thread on ice during the scab writers' material. From the sounds of it, most of what we get in the episodes written by the strike writers is "drop-in" stuff that wouldn't affect Ron's long-term plans too much. The one thing that I think the scabs ran in a different direction with (from what I've heard) is Everett.
