Warning: Rant coming up.
Days is making a really big deal over Deidre's upcoming 5,000th episode as Marlena and all it tells me is that she's been overplayed for 40+ years. I've always thought that. I can't go to Facebook without a current or past Days actor popping up in my timeline to gush over the great Deidre Hall. Yes, I'm being sarcastic because I never liked the character or actress. She's not that special. She was just celebrated the most recent time she died, and now she's going to be feted on air yet again. Blech.
I know she's got lots of fans but I'm not one of them.

I have always felt that the emphasis on the Marlena character prevented writing for other more interesting characters. Julie was relegated to the grandmother role way too early. I stopped watching for a time. Every time I tuned back in - Marlena was on my screen. Felt safe to return when I heard Deidre was gone. It didn’t last long but her scenes are more manageable now.

I might be in the minority here, but I'm a big fan of both the character and actress. There's definitely a level of cheese to both, but somehow, it makes Days feel like home. I also appreciate that she's proudly been a part of the show so long -- ever since her 1991 return, really. (She was upset to be let go in 2009 and very happy to return in 2011.) They've given Marlena a lot of stupid, hokey stories, several of which have been ridiculous, but Deidre always commits to them. And 5,000 episodes is a huge accomplishment!

Cast celebration. It's great to see Sarah in the photo. Nick is there also. Makes me wonder if those two are onscreen again later this year.

I was a kid when Marlena first started, and she was always my favorite character. That she was a psychiatrist was always something that attracted me. I enjoyed when she and Roman first got together, and I loved it when Drake Hogestyn took over the roll because he and Deidre had amazing chemistry from the start.
But I will say that in recent years I feel as though Marlena has gotten colder and more judgemental, which is a turn-off. The last time I really liked her was when Will came out as gay. At times, it feels like Deidre is bored with playing her. Oddly enough, I never feel that way watching Drake, but Deidre does have an extra decade than he does in Salem.

And has anyone noticed that Nick Fallon and Sarah are both in that picture.

5000 episodes is a LOT! Congratulations to her for withstanding some pretty difficult times and uncertainties with the show.
Now with that being said - Marlena has never been a favorite of mine. Most times I could take her or leave her. However, all of her damsel in distress and death storylines have taken their toll and I really don't care to see her front and center anymore. I'm still extremely bitter over how much time her death and her family grieving over her got, but Kayla and Kate got nothing. Kate was packaged up in an urn with only Roman and sometimes Lucas or Chad (when he wasn't catering to Stephanie's whining over missing a phone call) to grieve her and Kayla got booted by Stephanie.
I'm all for celebrating milestones, accomplishments, and the lives of these actor/actresses, but I just think those celebrations should the same. I guarantee you that Deidre Hall will receive a grander memorial tribute than both Stefano and Victor combined and those two deserved huge ones of their own.
