The original title of this thread was "The Destruction Of Mike & Carrie And The Terrible Way They've Written Carrie Since" but it was too long, lol! First things first. I loved EVERYTHING about their fairytale ending! Their conversations. Roman getting Carrie and Sami to hug it out and make up. Alice's advice to Mike (OH, THAT'S MY BOY!). Dizzy's Diner. And of COURSE, the proposal and riding off into the sunset on that white horse! Part 1 archive.org/details/126-1999-he-who-denies-the-past-is-destined-to-relive-it.anydownloader-1Part 2 archive.org/details/127-1999-c-rr-e-and-m-ke-s-engagement-anydownloaderAnd now for the rant. I CAN'T STAND the fact that they split them up for another BORING round of the Carrie, Austin, Lucas, Sami quadrangle! A quadrangle that regressed every character involved back to their 1995 selves as if they learned NOTHING in the years since. In that ending (as well as some earlier stuff I don't have access to) you see ALL KINDS of character growth. In fact, in one scene Carrie says she wants her whole life to be about growth from this point on. There's even a scene with Austin I actually like where he talks about him and Carrie just being friends where he gets philosophical (not something he did a whole lot of). Then on top of that they have Carrie cheat on Austin again as if we didn't see how wracked with guilt she was when she cheated on him with Mike. After cheating with Mike, she ptracticly walked around with a scarlet letter "A" on her forehead and even went to confession. More recently, I've had the pleasure of being able to relive this great storyline and I picked up some things I might've missed or didn't pay as much attention to when I was a teenager. One of them is the way the Austin/Carrie/Mike storyline deliberately echoes the Roman/Marlena/John storyline. One of the most interesting parts of the storyline is when Marlena gets involved and starts trying to warn Carrie (and to a lesser extent, Mike, but mostly Carrie) about the danger to her marriage. She's seen this movie before and if the people involved don't do things differently, she knows the ending. Another thing that the then head writer Sally Sussman Morina did a lot to stress is that Carrie's connection to Mike, like Marlena's connection to John, is MUCH deeper than the one she has to her husband. Here's a couple of good quotes from Christie Clark from SOD circa the late 90's. "Carrie was just a teenager when she fell in love with Austin. Now Mike has turned her into a woman with different needs." -- Christie Clark "Mike is older and has always been a family friend, someone Carrie can talk to about anything and get good advice. With Austin, it's all about sex." -- Christie Clark There's also a great scene towards the end of things after Austin saves Mike from crazy nurse Ali where he sees Carrie at Mikes bed side in the hospital that echoes a scene from earlier when Roman see's John and Marlena at Belles bedside in the hospital. In the earlier scene, Roman sees the bond between John and Marlena as they worry about Belle and realizes he has to step aside. Austin later comes to the same realization. I'm saying all this to say that James E. Reilly (God rest his soul) completely re-writes all of this for the boring quadrangle and to reunite a couple that had the depth of a bird bath. Also, another thing that got my attention this time around was that Mike and Carrie where leaving to go help people in a war torn part of the world that are in desperate need. With things as terrible as they are in the world nowadays, I REALLY liked that idea. That too is gone now and it SUCKS! He also ruined the whole thing with Sami and Carrie patching things up. Thankfully, that was fixed later by other writers (for me, the two of them fighting over a man got boring a long time ago. They're sisters and that's a bond that is [or at least should be] stronger than any connection to any man). I'll end things with a slice of just how popular Mike and Carrie where back in the late 90's from SOD. "Mail Bag The Mike/Carrie/Austin love triangle on DAYS OF OUR LIVES had fans offering their two cents' worth on the future of the threesome. Most were rooting for the Carrie and Mike pairing, discarding Carrie and Austin like yesterday's news. "I do believe in the sanctity of marriage, but I would love to see Carrie dump Austin in favor of Mike," one shares. Another enthusiast declares, "Mike and Carrie are fun, fresh, sexy and a real treat to watch." Pity poor Austin? No way! Viewers think a rebound romance with Sami will leave all parties satisfied: "Austin is always running to Sami's side. I think he has deeper feelings for her than he lets on."" - SOD 01/12/99

I really enjoyed Mike and Carrie as a pairing. I hated how unceremoniously they broke them up, more than anything. Their 2010 scenes, brief as they were, were at least a nice way to put a cap on things.

Even when I saw those scenes back then, I remember thinking to myself "The chemistry was still SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO there!". He still looked great, too. And about how unceremonious their break up was, I wasn't buying any of that "we fell out of love' crap they had Carrie try to feed us. After ONLY two years, or so! And when it was THAT DEEP! Here's a great scene I liked from that brief visit to pay tribute to Francis Reid/Alice Horton with Lexie( I had actually forgotten what a great platonic friendship they had).

I loved Mike and Lexie's friendship! Back in the day, she knew right from the jump that Mike and Carrie had feelings for each other and even encouraged him to go for it (though I don't think she wanted them to have an affair). At 07:22 in this video she tries to give Austin a clue. www.4shared.com/video/OO8NOJ_8iq/Days_of_our_Lives-_October_20_.html?
