On this day, 37 years ago, Stephen Nichols debuted as Steve “Patch” Johnson. Steve has always been one of my favorite characters, both for personal reasons, and I’ve loved seeing him evolve over the years. He has had wonderful story, both with Kayla and Jack. For me, the character of Steve represents independence and vulnerability that having a visual impairment can bring. Being blind myself, growing up, I never saw a lot of representation of the blind community in television. When I began watching soaps at the age of 11, I was introduced to Hope on The Young and the Restless, who was blind. I then began watching Days when I was 13,and I was introduced to Steve. What drew me to him was his sense of independence. He might of had one eye, but he wasn’t going to let that stop him at life. He powered through, despite what obstacles got in his way. That very much resonated with me as a kid,and I very much took that to heart, especially as I struggled with my own obstacles throughout life. I also liked how Steve showed his vulnerable side, granted this was at times in private, but we were able to see the emotion, and how he thought that he couldn’t be loved because of only having one eye. Yet it was Kayla who loved him. Kayla never called him Patch. Steve was always Steve to her. She was never bothered that Steve had one eye. She never saw his patch. To me that is probably one of the most beautiful aspects of Steve and Kayla’s love story. She was able to look beyond his patch, and love Steve for who he really was. Bravo to Days Of Our Lives and Stephen Nichols for bringing to life such a vibrant character who has helped me in some of those dark times, and has shown the light on what it means to be different. I hope that the character of Steve Johnson continues to keep shining. What have been your favorite Steve moments over the years?

Steve is always there for his family and friends. I enjoyed watching him evolve from a bad guy to a good guy as he fell in love with Kayla.
