When fans complain about characters being redeemed and their pasts forgotten, I wonder how many of them remember how Patch started out in Salem. He was NOT a nice guy.
Most characters go through changes in soaps. It can be really frustrating if you remember every detail of their past. If the writers decide to grow a character in a different direction, sometimes not dwelling on the past too much makes it easier or else you will drive yourself crazy.

Absolutely. I'm always sad when fans insist that a character can't change or be redeemed or whatever. If that were to happen they would get so bored with the same ole same ole. #ShakingMyHead

Interesting. I think he mellowed with time and some experiences he went through. And even then he wasn't nearly as awful as his dad was. It's cool to see some of these flashbacks.

I think just like Xander and Leo and several others, the show first planned for Steve "Patch" Johnson to be a one story arc villain. Then they saw what the actor could do and decided to keep them around which gave them more opportunity to grow and change the character. But it's always difficult to turn a villain into a hero, or just not a villain because fans have long memories.

It’s not so much that characters can’t change Some are better not to For example what was the point of redemption for Ben? He’s so uninteresting now he was way better as a serial killer and now he’s a waste of a good actor Others can just be opinion based I love how xander slowly transformed and I went from hating to loving him Stefan sucked when he came on the show and got worse and worse I personally don’t want the show to redeem him cuz I never accepted his character and likely never will

Another great redemption was Victor. Yes he´s still ruthless, but he's NOWHERE NEAR the bad guy he was in the 80's.

My Steve and Steve/Kayla adoration knows no bounds, but his first conversation with her at the payphone, yeah....not exactly high on my rewatch list. 😬 Re. redemption arcs, I've seen them handled sloppily and have been one of those complainer fans. On AMC, it would drive me insane how certain characters -- who were honestly more layered and dynamic and fun when they were scheming and plotting-- would suddenly be given a pass or let off the hook abruptly, then put onto pedestals and worshipped by the entire town. They'd rush the process of trying to make them beloved, and it showed. Complete opposite of that, Jack's redemption arc (what I've seen of it on YouTube at least). It blew my mind how I went from being repulsed and genuinely freaked out by a character to laughing at and rooting for him. So much of that is because of MA's brilliance, but it would really be nice if soaps still had the time/patience/budget to play that long game and really invest in stories/character arcs like that. They did it SO WELL before.

Their story happened at the right time. The chemistry between the characters sparked and the writers ran with it.

I went from hating the sight of him in 1988 to loving him in late 1989 and through 1990. The writing for him was off the charts good. Then they turned him into a clown character in 1991. Steve was always pretty sympathetic. Even when he was acting like trash you felt bad because Bo literally took out his eye
