Do you think a fan fiction is more compelling when a couple in your story is not a couple on air?
Let's use Ben and Ciara, just as an example. It could be Sarah and Xander for that matter. Do you think a fan fiction focussed on a couple is more interesting to readers when the couple is apart on air? Or doesn't it matter.

I don't think it matters. In some cases, the fanfiction version might be more interesting. For example, I don't enjoy Ben/Ciara, but if someone wrote a fanfiction that wrote them in a less annoying and more compelling way, I might enjoy it.
Similarly, though, fanfiction can give us the couples we wish were on air. One of the reasons I put JJ and Paige back together was I was SO ANGRY when they killed Paige off on the real show and wrote what I wished had happened instead.
Bottom line: for me, it's all about the story. Though if a couple is together in the show I can't help comparing to fanfiction. Like I do have in the back of my mind how my Rafe/Nicole compares to what's on air.
