In Rafe's kitchen, Ava confesses to Nicole that she saw Tripp leaving Charlie’s building the night Charlie was killed, before Ava found Charlie in his apartment with a bullet in his chest. Ava is concerned now that Sami is innocent, that maybe Tripp killed Charlie. Nicole tries to convince Ava to tell the police. She can’t let Sami go to prison for a crime she didn’t commit. Nicole needs to tell Rafe.
Enter Rafe asking “Tell me what?” They won’t answer, so Rafe lets them know that Sami is off the hook because she was still en route to Salem at the estimated time of death. Ava asks if there are any new suspects. Rafe says not yet. he offers to make them all tacos. Ava tries to get Nicole to leave, but she is staying put. While Rafe is in the other room, Ava begs Nicole not to say anything to Rafe.
Rafe is ready to serve the tacos. He presses Nicole to tell him what she mentioned earlier. She says the teddy bear’s eye fell out. She has to leave. He is surprised.
Over dinner, Ava tells Rafe she’s relieved Charlie is gone. She suggests Rafe drop the case. He loves Allie and sometimes he wishes the case would go away but he can’t. It’s his job to make sure justice is served.

Those writers better leave my Duke man alone! They are already messing with my couple, they better not mess with Duke too!

I think Tamara Braun did an awesome job bringing a human side to Ava in these scenes. In the past, Ava has been played as a sociopath who is obsessed with Steve. But now we are seeing a woman who is experiencing very complicated feelings about the death of her son. She feels guilt about the way she raised him but also relief that he can't hurt anyone anymore. I haven't enjoyed Ava during her other runs on the show, but I find myself looking forward to her scenes now. Softening her and having her form a relationship with Tripp has made her a much better character. I just hope it lasts and that she doesn't go back to being a sociopathic mob princess!
