TVLine has learned exclusively that the producers of Days of Our Lives have released the entire cast from their contracts, with the venerable soap set to go on an indefinite hiatus at month’s end. While the NBC sudser has not been cancelled, the unprecedented — and decidedly ominous — move comes at a precarious time for ratings-challenged Days and the vanishing soap genre as a whole. It also comes as Sony Pictures Television and NBC are in negotiations to renew series.

Jason47 says:
REGARDING THE TV LINE REPORT, CALM DOWN "DAYS" FANS... TV Line just posted an article about the entire "Days" cast being released from contract. With the show going on an extended production hiatus, this is a necessary business move. With most contract cycles only being 13 weeks, and the show going on hiatus for more than 13 weeks, this was the only possible option. With "Days" now having taped into July 2020, and written episodes into August 2020, the show was always going to have to suspend production at this point until they get word from NBC about its renewal decision, since they are pretty close to having written the last episode of the current contract. So, "Days" fans, don't look at this as a reason to worry, or a sign that NBC will not renew the show. This is just a necessary business decision. In fact, in the past, actors whose 13-week cycles ended during previous long production breaks, have quietly had their contracts lapse and then sign new ones when the show returns from break. So this is NOT the first time this has happened. It's just the first time it's been reported to this degree..

Maybe they just need to stop filming ahead so much!

TVLine is extremely credible and gets many exclusives. Like the article says, I think this was a strategic move having to do with the hiatus in filming. I was wondering what, if any, compensation the actors and crew would receive. This way, they end everyone's contracts at once and if the show is picked up past 2020, they can renegotiate with everyone and start fresh. Odd are, many will be offered a lesser salary and some won't return, which will reduce the budget and shake up the storylines.
Now we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Hopefully this will lead to a shorter time between filming and when the show airs. Filming eight months ahead is ridiculous.

I don't have a good feeling about this. I hope somehow a miracle happens and they can figure out a reasonable way to keep Days going.

I have written NBC about trying to keep the show afloat, maybe if they get enough people to write in they will see the interest and keep trying to find ways to keep the show going.

Seems too cowinkydinkish that this "newsflash" happened just as Days is doing this "never done before in daytime" reboot of the show.

I just saw a story about this on a local channel’s Facebook post. Who knows? They could change their mind no matter what they say now. I hope it’s not getting cancelled. I was excited about them shortening the gap between filming and airtime. Hope it turns out to be a false alarm.

Seems too cowinkydinkish that this "newsflash" happened just as Days is doing this "never done before in daytime" reboot of the show. It could just be a way to attract viewers. Promote the time jump to excite people, get them watching to “save” the show...I really don’t think it’s going anywhere.

The People story:
Days of Our Lives Put on Hiatus — But Source Says Soap Will ‘Almost Definitely Get Renewed’ Eric Todisco
The end may be near for Days of Our Lives — or is it?
TVLine reported Tuesday that the longtime NBC soap opera’s production company had let all the actors out of their contracts. The show will reportedly go on an “indefinite hiatus” this month, and the network will decide in 2020 if it should return for season 56.
However, a source tells PEOPLE that the show will likely continue past the brief hiatus, calling the report “a clickbait story.”
“The show shoots months and months in advance and they’ve gotten so far ahead that the cast was prepared ages ago for the fact that they would all be put on hiatus until closer to pick-up (aka renewal) time, for scheduling reasons,” the source says. “The show will almost definitely get renewed and this was not news to literally anyone on the show, nor is anyone truly concerned.”
According to Deadline, negotiations for season 56 are already underway.
NBC and reps for several cast members did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
The soap opera, which is currently in its 55th season, is one of the longest-running scripted television programs in the world, airing nearly every weekday since Nov. 8, 1965.
Some of the show’s most memorable cast members include John Aniston, Susan Seaforth Hayes, Suzanne Rogers, Deidre Hall, Eileen Davidson, Alison Sweeney, Bill Hayes and Chrishell Hartley.
Days of our Lives airs weekdays on NBC (check local listings).
