THE CONDO

Chloe: No one knows me better than you do. You’ve always been able to read me.
Philip: Well okay then. That means you feel the same way about me as I do about you.
Chloe: That’s irrelevant.
Philip: How the hell can that be irrelevant?
Chloe: Philip, if this goes any farther, we risk losing everything.
Philip: Excuse me? How do you figure that?
Chloe: We’ve had a really good thing for the past few months. For the first time ... maybe for the first time in my entire life, I felt like I was part of a real family. It was probably the best time of my whole life, and it came right after the worst time in my whole life.
Philip: It’s been the best time of my life too.
Chloe: Then you understand why this can’t go any farther.
Philip: Sweetie, you’re not making any sense.
Chloe: If it doesn’t work out, then we’ll have nothing. We’ll end up in a custody battle over Parker ...
Parker: Hey, don’t drag me into this. Work it out, people.
Philip: Stop. Chloe, just stop. How did we go from “the best time in your life” to worst-case scenario?
Chloe: Because that’s how my life always ends up.
Philip: That’s because we’ve never given us a real chance. Did you ever wonder why our past relationships failed?
Chloe: All the time.
Philip: And why we always end up being drawn together? I know why. It’s because those other people weren’t the right ones for us. [He lifted her chin so she would look at him.] It’s because we’re the right ones for each other. Why else, after all these years, do we still love each other? It’s because it should have always been you and me.
Chloe looked at Philip with tear-filled eyes.
Chloe: You always make things sound so simple, so basic.
Parker: Gotta love Daddy. He always explains things so I can understand them.
Philip: That’s because love is simple ... unless you make it complicated. There’s nothing more basic than love and happiness. Like when we were on the beach yesterday, you said something very simple. You said you wanted me. Those words made me happier than you can imagine.
Chloe: Why?
Philip: Why??? Because I wanted you too. And I’ve been keeping my feelings to myself for months because you told me you didn’t want a relationship with me.
Chloe: When did I say that?
Philip: Several times. Starting with your first day here. The day you moved to Chicago, you told me you didn’t even want my friendship.
Chloe: You can’t quote anything I said that day. I was a total mess when I first got here. You helped me find myself again.
Philip: That’s because you opened up to me. We really talked. We really communicated. But lately ... you keep running away from me. And from yourself. Why? Chloe, please tell me why.
Chloe took a deep breath.
Chloe: It’s because .... Do you ever .... Don’t you ever think about ... I mean ...
Parker: You’re stammering like Aunt Melanie. Just spit it out, Mommy!
Chloe: Doesn’t it bother you that I did what I did after you left Salem?
It took Philip a minute to catch on to what Chloe was referring to.
Philip: Oh. That. Yeah, it bothers me all the time.

Yay! Thanks for the extra chapter. Love them both. I've always thought Phillip and Chloe were just working their way back to each other with all of those other people. They belong together and I hope Phillip made Chloe realize it.

Chloe: Doesn’t it bother you that I did what I did after you left Salem?
It took Philip a minute to catch on to what Chloe was referring to.
Philip: Oh. That. Yeah, it bothers me all the time. If I had known what you were going through ... I feel horrible that you didn’t think I’d support you.
Chloe: No, that’s not what I meant.
Philip: Huh? Then, what do you mean?
Parker: Don’t feel bad, Dad. I don’t understand either. I stopped trying to follow her logic 10 minutes ago.
Chloe: I meant, the idea of being with me ... after ... after I’ve been with ... so many ... other men.
Philip: Oh. ... No. No, that thought never even crosses my mind. When I’m with you, it’s just us. The only guy you were with that I was ever bugged by was Brady. Oh, and Lucas. Hell ... and Daniel too.
Chloe laughed.
Chloe: I don’t know how you manage to make me laugh at times like these.
Philip: I think it’s because I know you so well. And you know me. And you trust me. At least I hope you do.
Chloe didn’t respond. Philip ran his hands through his hair in exasperation and he sighed.
Parker: Geez Ma, do you want Dad to be bald before his time? Because you’re making him want to pull out all his hair!
Philip: Could you maybe meet me halfway, Chloe? I can’t do this all alone.
Parker: Hey Dad, time out. Can we have a father/son chat? Tell me the truth. Is she an example of what girls are like? Because if this is what I have to look forward to, I might go gay.
Chloe: Sorry. I just ... I do trust you. I just ... I’m scared.
Philip: Of what? Tell me what you’re afraid of.
Chloe: I’m afraid of everything. I’m afraid of getting hurt. I’m afraid of hurting you, of hurting Parker. I’m afraid of my past coming back to haunt me. I’m afraid of giving my heart to someone only to have it broken again. I’m afraid of losing my best friend.
Parker: She’s a real head case, Dad.
Philip put his arms around her and held her.
Philip: You won’t lose me.
Chloe: Philip, sometimes ... I’m afraid I don’t even know what love is.
Parker: Love is a warm puppy.
Philip: Of course you do, Chloe. Listen, I’m scared too. But I’m more scared of not being together than of being together.
Chloe: Please let me go.
Philip released her from his embrace and sighed.
Philip: You’re wearing me out, Chloe.
Chloe was quiet for a few minutes.
Chloe: You said you love me.
Philip: And I meant it.
Chloe: Why? Why do you love someone like me? I’m so high maintenance.
