HOTEL DINING ROOM, FRIDAY MORNING

Chloe sat by herself at a table for 8. She had ear buds in her ears and was listening to one of the songs she was planning to sing tonight. She felt a tap on her shoulder and she looked up to see Philip. He sat down next to her and she removed the ear buds.

Philip: Good morning.
Chloe: Where’s Rachel?
He reached for the bread basket and offered her a roll. She shook her head no.
Philip: I don’t know. I haven’t seen her.
Chloe: Aren’t you ... sharing a room?
Philip: No.
Chloe gave him a dubious look.
Philip: This is a business conference and it wouldn’t be appropriate.
Chloe: Oh.
Philip: I spoke to Lucinda this morning.
Chloe: Me too.
Philip: Yeah, she mentioned you called. Sounds like Parker is doing fine without us.
Chloe: He’s probably doing better than me. I really miss him.
Philip: Me too. ... Um, Chloe ... we never talked about the other night and we need to.
Rachel: Good morning!
Rachel sat down next to Philip and draped her arm around his shoulder.
Rachel: How’s everyone? You sleep okay? Chloe, are you relaxed and ready for tonight?
Chloe: Pretty much. That massage yesterday really helped.
Rachel: Good!
Chloe: I’m gonna go for a run on the beach in a little while ... to help clear my head.
Rachel: That’s a great idea. You’ll find the Key has some of the most beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Coast. If you go about a mile north, you’ll come to a private beach cove. It’s like there’s no one else in the world there but you, the sand and the sea. Rachel looked at Philip. We should go there.
Chloe: Well, I’ll leave you two alone. See you later.
Rachel: Bye Chloe. ... She’s a really nice girl, Philip. I could see the two of us becoming friends.
Philip nearly spit out his coffee.
Rachel: You okay?
Philip: Fine. Ahem. Fine.
Rachel: Want to go dancing tonight after the show? I kind of want to get you alone.
Philip: That’s a good idea.

I get the feeling that Chloe is relieved every time Rachel shows up. It seems like they are both so afraid to make the first move. I understand they each have their reasons and lots of baggage to overcome, especially with each other, but they are starting to wear me out.

Should I post another chapter to move this along a bit more?

OCEAN VIEW RESORT NIGHT CLUB, FRIDAY NIGHT

Philip and Rachel sat together at a table near the stage, watching the performers. After the comedy act, Chloe was introduced. She appeared in a very fitted black glittery strapless dress with a sweetheart neckline.
Rachel: Wow, she cleans up real good. She’s stunning.
Philip: Yes she is.
Rachel looked at Philip and knitted her brow. She immediately regretted saying that, and she wished he wasn’t so quick to agree. She playfully punched his arm.
Rachel: You’re a one-woman man, remember?

But Philip’s eyes were trained on Chloe as she sang. He felt proud of her and wished Parker were here to see his mother perform. She sang mostly show tunes that worked for her vocal range, starting with Memories from Cats, followed by I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady. She then sang a set that included “Once Upon a Time,” “If I Loved You” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar. She appeared to be looking at Philip throughout the entire set, and the lyrics to the songs she sang were speaking from her heart to his. Philip and Chloe looked at one another as if there were no one else in the room, and that fact didn’t escape Rachel’s notice. Nor did the lyrics of the songs.
