What really makes a super-couple? (Read 271 times)

This is a two-parter in the sense that this thread is a two-part question. The first part being what really makes a super-couple "a super-couple" here on DAYS? 

The second part of my two-part question is who would you say is Days' most popular super-couple of all time?

Out of the couples listed, Steve and Kayla are my favorites. I think that EJ and Sami may be more popular though, followed by Bo and Hope.

This is a good question. I think what makes a super couple super is longevity. There has to be a lot of buildup and not contrived buildup. There should be some life-saving where each member of the couple rescues the other, either emotionally or physically. Nowadays, there's no buildup, and there's immediately a triangle. Triangles are lazy writing in my opinion. Couples work best when the conflict is organic and true to character.

I agree that what makes a super-couple a super-couple not just on soaps but on DAYS in general is longevity. I can definitely agree with that statement and the build-up these days with couples feels either forced or rushed. However, back in the 80s and 90s there was a lot of build-up with couples and a lot of life-saving but now these days it feels like they go through the motions.

A super couple is a couple very much in love that if one should pass away, there really is no other for the person left. There are more than 1 in the list above. So giving us just 1 vote each was tough. In reality there is only one, Julie & Doug because they are also a super couple in real life!

Steve and Kayla. Always thought they were  great together.  A super-couple is a couple that helps each other through the bad times, and really appreciates the good times.  And a super-couple has good chemistry.

I grew up on Bo and Hope so they will always be THE super couple for me, although I also love Jennifer and Jack, Steve and Kayla, and Kimberly and Shane. And EJ and Sami grew on me with time, but since EJ and Sami, I can’t say that Days has really taken the time or energy to invest in any couple enough to make them a “super couple.”

In my opinion, a super couple needs multiple things to work:

1. Chemistry. That magical something that happens when two actors share the screen. You can write for it but you can’t script it or plan it. It just has to be there to begin with and if the writers are smart they run with it.

2. Build up. As Kpatch said, love triangles aren’t build up on their own. They can be a part of any couple's story but shouldn’t monopolize their story. Build up should take time and be organic.

Example: Bo was the rebel from the wrong side of the tracks. He was the black sheep of the working class Brady clan. Hope was younger, wealthier and considered a princess in her father’s eyes. It took a long time before these two actually came together but it was worth the wait.

3. Longevity. Once a couple finally becomes a couple, it’s fun to watch them grow as one. Too many writers think that all the fun is gone once a couple gets together but they’re wrong. I want to see a couple get married, have kids, struggle together through obstacles, not always be torn apart by them. If well written, then there’s plenty of entertaining moments (both angsty and fun) in those types of stories.

I’m all about bo and hope
They would be number one for me
I also loved jack and Jennifer as well as Steve and Kayla and of course Tom and Alice
Never cared about John and Marlena as much but that’s mainly cuz deidre hall is annoying
I love ej and Sami because they had chemistry as well as an edge
I felt that Jason cook and storms as Shawn and belle had started out as a big super couple and I remember thinking they would be the next bo and hope
Once they were recasted and returned after long time gone I felt they jumped the shark
Belle became as annoying as her mother and Shawn gets two minutes of air time every six months
It’s a shame cuz they were good once upon a time
I think the days of super couples are gone unfortunately and it’s being replaced by rape stories that never get dealt with and cartoon characters like Leo
Also forced coupling like rafe and hope or sonny and will

I even forgot to add Kimberly and Shane in the polls. They are another classic example of a super couple. However, the 3 things I will definitely agree with you on are build-up, longevity and chemistry.
