Uh oh. Aiden should have known better than to say that.
I would think the cops would eventually find out Hope was his ex girlfriend. It might have been better to say she was his ex who he never wants to see again, but maybe he couldn't do that with a straight face.

Chapter 22a
The cop started to leave, then turned around. “You live here alone?”
“Uh.” He nervously scratched his temple. “Actually no. I live here with my wife.”
“I’d like to speak to her too.”
“She’s sleeping. She’s been unwell.”
“Mind if I take a look anyway?”
Aiden flinched and quickly said, “You have a warrant?”
“Do you have something to hide?” the trooper shot back.
“No sir. I’m just beginning to feel a little like this is an interrogation. I told you, I don’t know anything. But if you insist, please, I’ll show you where my wife is sleeping.” Aiden began to lead the way to the bedrooms.
“What’s your wife’s name?”
“Uh. Meredith. And I should warn you that she’s got the Bird Flu. It’s highly contagious, so I’ll have to give you scrubs to put on if you want to peek into her room.”
The officer stopped in his tracks. “Oh. Uh. That’s okay. I’ll take your word for it. I … I hope she gets—” The trooper ran out the front door before finishing his sentence.
Aiden followed. He looked through the peep hole and watched the Trooper’s cruiser speed off, leaving a cloud of dust in its wake. He let out the breath he was holding.

I’m glad that worked. Hopefully the state trooper doesn’t try to come back, though.

Chapter 22b
Aiden looked through the window and watched the Trooper’s cruiser speed off, leaving a cloud of dust in its wake. He let out the breath he was holding.
He went back down the hall and quietly opened the door to Hope’s room. The bed looked odd. “Hope?”
“Is he gone?” Her voice came from underneath the bed.
“Yeah, I told him you had Bird Flu and he ran for his life.”
Hope crawled out from under the bed and when she got to her knees, Aiden held out his hands and helped her up. “That was quick thinking. Thank you,” she said as he helped her to her feet.
“Any time.”
“I meant thank you for lying to the Trooper.” She looked into his eyes for a long moment. Then she took a step back and shook her head. “What a thing to say thank-you for. I’m a cop and what? Suddenly I think it’s okay to lie to law enforcement?” Placing her hand on her forehead, she said, “I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
“You’ve been through hell, Hope. It’s not surprising you’re conflicted.”
“Conflicted? Feels more like a nervous breakdown.”
“I’m here for you. You know that.”
Turning to face him, she said, “Of course I know that. You’ve been amazing and I don’t know what I’d have done without you. I wish I wasn’t so completely dependent on you.”
“You won’t always be.”
“How do you know?”
“Because, we’ll figure it out — together. Right now, we dodged a bullet, so try to relax for a while.” He glanced toward the door. “I have something I need to do, so I’ll be out there if you need me.”
He left the bedroom and re-opened the lid of his laptop to continue his research.

Ok. So Aiden is still looking into Gina? I have thoughts about where he might be going with this, but I’m not sure that they make sense....
Previews would be a good thing, boss.... (hint hint)
