Have you done one of those DNA or genetic tests that tells you your background? Did you find anything that surprised you like in those commercials?

Well, my sister did one, which is almost the same as me since we have the same parents. She's really into genealogy (sp?). Anyway, we were kind of surprised b/c we always said we were half German and didn't really know what else, maybe a little Swedish and English. When it came back the highest percentage was actually Scandinavian and THEN German. They were close but it was still kind of different b/c we've always identified as German (our last name is German) but we're more Scandinavian. Other than that, nothing too surprising. It was pretty interesting though. I'm trying to get my mom to do one so that we can see how much hers differs from ours.

I did the test a few years ago. No surprises - 50% Welsh, 48% Irish and traces of Scandinavian. The Ancestry site gave me a list of possible family matches. I connected with the son of my grandmother's sister. He and his wife met me for lunch and we visited another cousin. I never contacted any of the other possibilities because I couldn't trace the relationship.

My sister-in-law had her family take the 23andMe DNA test. Her husband(my brother) and her daughter's results came back in a timely manner but her results did not. She contacted the company and they sent her another kit. Before she could submit, she got the results of her original test. It told her that she was a carrier of a genetic disease. She thinks they were double checking the result. She is not going to have more children and her daughter is not a carrier so she was not too worried. This test sounds like it gives too much information. At least, I wouldn't do it.

I did it. I found out that the man I thought was my father my whole life is not my father and the man who adopted me when I was 12 (my Mom's second husband) IS my father. Trippy.
50% Irish 24% Europe West - Belgium, France, Germany, etc 12% Iberian Peninsula - Spain, Portugal 5% Great Britain - England, Scotland, Wales 3% Scandinavia - Sweden Norway, Denmark 3% Europe East - Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, etc. 2% Finland/Northwest Russia 1% Italy/Greece
AKA 100% European.

Wow Minako98... I work with a gal who is in her upper 60's suddenly received a phone call asking about her father. Long story short, the gal and her share the same father. Seems that back during the war, her Mom & dad weren't getting along, then apparently one time her Dad did get along with another woman on the base. This was all because of Ancestry.com

Wow Minako98, that is an unexpected revelation. I think I would be okay not knowing that.

Wow Minako98 , that is an unexpected revelation. I think I would be okay not knowing that. I'm actually very okay with it. He raised me and I couldn't have loved him any more knowing then what I know now. Sadly, I found out in the past 4 months and he's been gone since January 1, 1988. I wanted to talk to my mother about it, but she'd been in and out of the hospital so much before she passed and I didn't want to upset her about it. For those that didn't know, my Mom passed on Dec.4th 2016. That's one of the reasons I hadn't been on lately, amongst many others that I don't have time to go into right now, but will soon-ish.
