I'm thinking about buying a new computer. I have a Thinkpad right now which seems to crash at least twice a day, and I'm having issues with the power button -- it takes forever to get it to turn on.
Anyway, I was looking at discounts I get through my school and I found out that I can get a Chromebook pretty cheaply, for way less than it would cost to get any other computer. As in between $200-$600 depending on the model rather than $800+. I do all my writing, including school papers, on Google docs and I have an Android tablet and Android smartphone, so on the surface a Chromebook seems like a good idea. The reviews I've read are mixed so I'm wondering if anyone has one and can give me some thoughts about it.

I have one. It's a Samsung (and no, it's never started smoking). I'm using it now. Mine might be a lower model than what you're looking at. I bought it on sale at Best Buy for about $150. I believe it was about a year ago. It's not fancy but I like it. I mostly use it to surf the web, and watch videos. I think the picture quality is good. I think mine is an 11' screen. I wanted something small, lightweight and portable.
My main complaint is that I can't put iTunes on it. The other thing I don't like is the scrolling. It's very jumpy.

Does a Chromebook come with a word processing and spreadsheet program?

Kpatch It comes with Google Docs and Google Spreadsheets. I think you can also download an offline program but I'm happy with Google since I do all my work on those programs anyway so I haven't really looked into it yet.
