JAVA CAFE
MELANIE: Wow, big question.
CASSIE: Yeah, I figured it would be.
MELANIE: Okay, the best I can come up with offhand is to fight fire with fire. I know my brother, he’s a businessman. He tries to negotiate everything, so negotiate back. If he wants you to understand that Vivian is part of his life, then you need to make him understand your concerns. And believe me, they are very valid concerns.
CASSIE: Thank you. That makes a lot of sense, actually. So, if Vivian wanted to kill you…she’s not still trying, is she?
MELANIE: No, she got over that years ago.
CASSIE: Wow. How’d you manage that?
MELANIE: We came to an understanding. We don't necessarily like each other, but she’s not out for blood anymore, so that’s something.
CASSIE: Interesting. Well, thanks for this. It’s given me a lot to think about.
MELANIE: Well, what are sisters-in-law for?
CASSIE: True that. Well, I’ll let you go, but it’s nice to properly meet you and my niece.
MELANIE: You too.
Melanie wrote something down on a scrap of paper.
MELANIE: I’m sure you have Philip’s number, but here’s mine. Update me on how things go.
CASSIE: I will. Thanks again.
Cassie took the paper and walked away.
BRADY PUB
ROMAN: I can confirm that she is still in town, yes.
HATTIE: She still doin’ that radio show?
ROMAN: No. That Miles Molloy character didn’t get the mega-star ratings he was expecting. No, Doc’s radio days are long over.
HATTIE: Does that mean they brought back Dr. Higley?
ROMAN To tell you the truth, Hattie, I haven’t really kept up with midday talk radio, and I have a feeling that that is not the real reason you asked about Marlena.
HATTIE: Well, it was worth a shot. Fine, you got me. You were always so smart.
ROMAN: I appreciate the compliment. So, why don’t you tell me the real reason you’re so interested in whether Doc’s in town or not.
HATTIE: Like I said before, since I got outta the slammer, I’ve been trying to make amends. I know there’s not a chance in hell she’d wanna see me, but if I can, I’d like to talk to Dr. Marlena. I put her through a lotta grief, and I wanna apologize for that.
PARK
Noelle pressed a button on the device and looked at it again. She placed it back on her belt.
REX: Everything okay?
NOELLE: Absolutely. Sorry about that, I just had to check. I’m diabetic, and that little machine tells me what my blood sugars are.
REX: Oh, gotcha.
NOELLE: So, that lunch, then?
REX: Yeah. How do you feel about chowder?
NOELLE: I mean, I went to medical school and lived in Boston for the last decade or so. I am all about chowder.
REX: Well, get ready to eat the best bowl of chowder you’ve ever tasted.
Noelle chuckled and raised an eyebrow.
NOELLE: Oh! I may have been born in Salem, but I consider myself a Boston girl, and those are fightin’ words.
Rex chuckled, too.
REX: Yeah, well, I’m pretty sure you’ll agree with me once you’ve tried this place.
NOELLE: We’ll see. Lead the way, sire.
They chuckled again and Rex led Noelle down the street.
BLACK PATCH
Joy sat at her desk downstairs, eating lunch. Her phone went off.
JOY: Hi, Mom. What’s up? What? Whoa, Mom, slow down! You’re not making any sense. Now, what’s going on? What?!
