Chapter 379
HORTON HOUSE
It was a few days after the wedding. Bill brought a suitcase down the stairs.
JENNIFER: Are you sure you can't stay a few more days?
BILL: Oh, I wish I could, sweetheart, but unfortunately, I've gotta get back. You should come out sometime, you and Daniel.
JENNIFER: Well, I'm sure we would love that. Oh, it's been so good having you home for the weekend!
Jennifer and Bill hugged.
JENNIFER: And don't think you're getting out of here without a hug, either, mister.
Jennifer and Mike hugged.
MIKE: Wouldn't dream of it, sis. Good to see you.
JENNIFER: You too.
There was a knock on the door.
JENNIFER: It's open.
Lucas walked in.
LUCAS: Mind if I join the party?
JENNIFER: Hey!
Jennifer and Lucas hugged.
JENNIFER: I thought you'd be packing to go on your honeymoon.
LUCAS: I did. Sami's just dropping off the kids, so I thought I'd come over and say goodbye.
Lucas and Mike gave each other a bro hug.
MIKE: It was good to see you again, brother.
LUCAS: You too, man. Thanks for coming.
Bill and Lucas shook hands and then hugged.
BILL: Congratulations, son. I'm proud of you.
LUCAS: Thanks, Dad. Glad you made it out.
BILL: I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
Bill looked at his watch.
BILL: Well, looks like our time is just about up.
Everyone had one last round of hugs.
JENNIFER: It was great to see you both again! Come back soon!
MIKE: We will, Jen.
Mike and Bill picked up their suitcases and walked out.
SHAWN-D & BELLE'S HOUSE
CIARA: I'm telling you, dude, you're overthinking it.
Ciara and Chase were sitting at the table eating breakfast. Claire walked in.
CLAIRE: What's going on?
CHASE: Hey. How'd you sleep?
CLAIRE: Good.
Claire and Chase kissed.
CLAIRE: Now, anyone want to tell me what's up?
CIARA: Chase seems to think that there's some malicious reason as to why Mom and Aiden haven't called to check in.
CLAIRE: Well, you have to admit, that is kinda weird.
CHASE: I know. Dad always checks in, even if he's super busy.
CLAIRE: I'm sure there's a good reason, though.
CIARA: Of course there is. They're being intimate. I mean, a week and a half in Hawaii and another in Alaska? There's probably lots of stuff to do there. Besides, it's still their honeymoon. I'm sure they've got plenty to occupy themselves.
CHASE: I hope you're right.
Claire hugged Chase. Then, Chase's phone went off.
CIARA: See, that's probably them now.
CHASE: I don't recognize the number. Hello? Hello?
He hung up.
CHASE: That was weird. There was just a bunch of static on the other end.
KETCHIKAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – KETCHIKAN, ALASKA
Hope sat in one of the terminals in an airport in the southern part of Alaska. Aiden walked up, two cups in his hand. He handed one to Hope.
HOPE: Thanks. You find out anything?
AIDEN: Well, the snow's finally stopped falling, but they're still considering it too dangerous to fly out. The woman at the desk said they're going to try to find hotels for everyone here.
HOPE: Well, it's either that or live like that guy from The Terminal.
AIDEN: I should hope it doesn't come to that.
HOPE: I know. I was just trying to add some levity to a crappy situation. It'd be easier to get in touch with somebody from home and let them know what's going on if our phones weren't missing.
AIDEN: Unfortunately, that can't be helped at the moment. I did try calling Chase on a pay phone after talking to the woman at the desk. But, the connection was bad.
Hope took Aiden's hand.
HOPE: I'm sure we'll get out of this soon.
