I wish the people in charge of casting would stop hiring actors from other soaps without a real plan for the character.
In some cases it feels like someone behind the scenes wants a particular actor simply because they were popular in a previous role. The actor is either miscast in a role or wanders around doing nothing. The most recent examples are Sal Stowers as Lani and John Paul Lavoisier as Philip.
I'm sure some of the problem is the changes in the writing team. But some of these characters weren't doing anything interesting from day one.
Hire actors who are right for the role and give them an interesting story!!

I think the key is don't create characters without a plan, period. It's like they make up a character then don't know what to do with them. Give them a backstory. Bring back them to town with a worthwhile secret (not like Jordan). Give them a reason to be in Salem without overusing them or, conversely, having them do a walking tour of Salem with no purpose.

Quit casting altogether in my opinion. Have 10-12, maybe 15 main characters and 8-10-12 secondary characters.

Exactly! I think the writers bring some characters in with one short term story in mind and then have no idea how to utilize them after that.

Was there ever a purpose to Lani? Did she have a storyline? She's someone to me that seems like someone at the show knew her and hired her as a favor.
JPL on the other hand was just a miscast. Philip has had a purpose on the show its just hard to tell because almost ALL of the characters and stories are backburnered for long periods of time. I think Hope and he little circle are the only ones always on regularly.

JPL as a miscast is a perfect description wendylou. The best casting they have done lately is with Deimos. I'm really impressed with that one. A great actor whose character actually has a story and a purpose. I feel like Eduardo is a character who has a lot of potential but has never really been fleshed out. He's on so rarely. The producers also need to not overplay new/passing characters like they have with Jordan, Serena, and Summer. Don't make us choke on new characters by forcing them down our throats.

It just feels like at times the writers are throwing characters at a wall to see what sticks. Whether it be new ones, or bringing back old characters. They just seem directionless. Philip is a prime example. He's a popular character and a legacy. However, I do believe that he was miscast (JPL is just limited in his range), and the writers didn't seem to know what to do with him so he got backburned. No more new characters, and if you're bringing back old ones, then have a story in place. It feels like their making it up as they go along. Days got a reprieve, but if they don't get their act together, then I'm concerned about a renewal.

We need less secret family members popping out of the woodwork (especially when they're only going to be temporary), less screen time for Hope, Rafe and Ciara, and more screen time for the characters we only see a couple of times a month - like Lucas, Paul and Marlena. I loved when Sami was on the show, but the show revolved around her in the end. The show shouldn't revolve around any one person or small group. This isn't a sitcom that has one star and everyone else plays supporting characters. This is why so many storylines in the background get rushed endings, like Jennifer's addiction. Jennifer was popping pills for about 6 months, but we rarely saw her. Hope and Ciara lived her her house for a couple of months, and we still didn't see Jennifer's struggles! I think it was ridiculous that the entire storyline got wrapped up in one episode.

I think it was ridiculous that the entire storyline got wrapped up in one episode. You point out a lot of good point, Jen might get a lot of screen time but she get to real compelling story line in all that air time, like where was her struggle to get off drugs? Why is she suddenly clean and sober and solid enough to be vying for custody of her grandson when Chad's done nothing wrong in the eyes of the law and it all boils down to Jen's feeling about JJ's interpretation of Chad's behavior about how the search is being done for Abby by people hired by Chad. Paul needs more air time, both w and with out members of the Black family , I think part of that will come with the return of Freddie Smith ( Sonny Kiriakis) but they story needs to be beyond that. Where is Gabi and JJ's storyline? What going to be Sonny job if in fact Eduardo really purchased TBD, I sorry but I really don't buy that Sonny would be happy working for Victor over the long haul. And if Victor has even minor responsibility in Tate's kidnapping that becomes even more of a mess. Where are Adrienne and Lucas, there were seen the day that got engaged 6.21.16 put not a single set of scenes since that day. Rafe, Hope, Ciara, Andre, (missing Abby S/l) ((missing JJ)), Aidan has seen to much scene time with various characters as of late... so does Summer for that matter... Dario and Blanca are interesting but lack story lines and I think part of that is writing, part of it is the over airing of other characters' or story lines. Victor could to with slightly less air time too, he not nearly as bad and Hope, Ciara and Rafe but he lack of actual story as a result it to much time on air, kind of the same situation with Jen (to much air time for the resolutions her s/l's get. Demios also beyond the fact I find him kind of a weak character I think he is among the worst of the cast with the amount of time, his point less story gets. The younger generation should care the show more, such as Paul, Sonny when he returns, even Lucas's and Adrienne's generation. Not Ciara's (teen scene) and not Victor/Demios the generation older then Lucas/Adrienne's. And that a problem is the two generations that shouldn't carry the major story line's do... Hope would work with less air time and actual story line and Aidan is point less especially with Chase existing.

Bryan Dattilo and Judi Evans aka Lucas and Adrienne are not on contract which is probably why they are rarely seen.
Some stories have probably been accelerated and/or changed due to Summer's impending exit.

Some stories have probably been accelerated and/or changed due to Summer's impending exit. While I can believe that I can it probably partly the fact that they aren't the story line's I care to see. It seems to be on contract or not Bryan Dattilo and Judi Evans could still be given a story with out being the primary story line. I mainly feel that way because this isn't the Hope, Demios, Ciara, Aidan, Rafe show and we basically have story lines driven by them, characters I don't particular care out.
