In an exit interview with Soap Opera Digest, Joe Mascalo (Stefano) talks about his decision to retire after suffering a stroke last spring and what it was like to shoot his final scenes. He loved the way the storyline was done and felt it was a fitting exit though quite sad for him, and the cast and crew surprised him with a cake after the scene was shot. At the end of the interview, Mascalo says
What are your speculations on what this might mean? Ghost? Hallucination? Flashback to a scene we never saw before? Or is Stefano not really quite dead yet?

Stefano will never truly die until Joe does. Even then, I'd still expect Joe to come back from the dead.

I'm hoping to see Stefano's spirit appear to Andre, Chad and maybe Theo. Maybe Hope will be haunted by him. Sadly because of Joe's health and retirement I think Stefano is probably dead.

I believe it is a spirit haunting hope or it is possible it was meant as a joke too because of how many times he has resurrected from the dead perhaps his spirit will guide Chad in dealing with Andre too, Stefano wasn't too thrilled with the idea of Andre brainwashing him or his whole plan with Belle

I can't believe I didn't think of the possibility of Stefano appearing to Chad as a ghost. Chad is so not a typical Dimera I didn't even consider it. I like that idea.

I feel like Chad and Stefano challenged each other so differently then EJ and Stefano Chad made Stefano more Human and perhaps was like a conscience to him where Chad being a Dimera made him more charming and witty kind of an innocent little devil can get pretty close to the line but wouldn't quite cross it, he knows right from wrong but can play the game if its business I would love to see him appear to Chad as I enjoy their messed up father son relationship

I didn't realize that Joe had had a stroke. Praying that he can get some added rest now from the craziness that is involved shooting these scenes and that his health improves.
I agree with DD tho, until Joe is gone, I don't ever expect Stefano to really be dead. He IS the Phoenix. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that the "visions" that people have turn out to be the real deal. But at the same time I know that the writers had to pave the way for Stefano to be off the screen more and more due to Joe's health.

I hate to see him leave under these circumstances. He's like the Victor Newman of Days!!

I want the show to stay on forever and ever, but if it does end whlle Joe is still alive, I wouldn't be shocked to have a next-to-last scene with everyone in the Horton living room, and just when we think it's over... we cut to a dark office, where a chair swivels around and we see Stefano smiling and declaring, "It's good to be back!"
