I sometimes wonder why shows decide to kill off a character versus having them leave town. With Days, people have been known to come back from the dead, but it is way less awkward to explain a character's return when they were merely out of town, like Philip, than a character who died and whose organs were given away, like Jack for example.
Why have Daniel die? Why not let him get a great job offer at the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic? What about Eric. Not sure what his fate will be.
Are the writers obsessed with death and destruction? They sure thin out the cast as well as future possibilities by killing characters off.

I can't really see a good reason to kill Daniel. He could have had a breakup with Nicole and left town. Maybe it has to do with timing. New writers took over with their own agenda and no time to deal with a story for an actor who wanted to leave. Shawn Christian (Daniel) has been making movies so maybe a contract extension was out of the question for him. Greg Vaughan (Eric) did agree to an extension to deal with his exit which comes in the spring.
The only upside I can see is making a clean break for Nicole. She won't have to make excuses for Daniel being out of town, at the hospital, in the other room. Maggie did that for years and it did the character no favors. The story will also give Ari Zucker (Nicole) some meaty material for a change.

I love this new Nicole I do t want to see the old one be a result of Daniels death I am not overly attached to Daniel but don't want to see anymore death As Kpatch said they seem to just go straight to killing them off and it's harder to explain them coming back from the dead I see it as lazy writing As for Eric I don't know what his fate is but I hope it's not death or rehab because both of those stories are over played on dool

I feel like the current regime thinks that daytime drama means death. Tomlin/Whitesell focused too much on rape. Higley/Griffin seem to be into killing people.
I don't see why they need to kill Daniel, but my fervent wish is that after the funeral there's never ever ever ever ever ever ever a reason for Melanie to return to Salem again! If that's what we get in return, I'll take it.

I'm so incredibly heartbroken, especially after seeing today's scenes. Daniel has been absent for months, making me wonder if it's that they didn't bother to write story for him because he's leaving or whether Shawn Christian (Daniel) chose to leave because they were giving him nothing to do.
There is NO reason to kill Daniel off. None. All they needed to do is have a phone call or visit with Chloe where they discuss how Parker can't be bouncing back and forth between two cities now that he's kindergarten age and Daniel makes the difficult decision to move to Chicago so he can be near his son and work at a hospital there. Nicole cannot go with him because of Basic Black, she sadly breaks things off with him, knowing it's best for everyone. The end. That would also allow Nicole to grow as a character and make the best choice not the choice that involves holding onto a man unnecessarily.

I'm under the impression that they wanted to get rid of Daniel to give his airtime to some of the old vets who've returned. Daniel was a huge part of this show for a while and LOTS of people complained about that (not all but lots). I feel like the writers are responding to that but ironically they took so long to do it people actually like him more now. Also, while I think there's nothing wrong with taking him off screen for a while, I really don't understand why they felt the need to kill him. I think it's especially bad after all of these other deaths.
I would have been fine with him moving away but I don't like Daniel being killed off.
We'll have to see but I got the feeling that Eric's exit, which I think is still s few months away, will not be him dying. At least I hope not.

Why can't they give him a terminal disease and have him choose to be frozen (cryogenics) until they find a cure? They can even pattern it after a story where the person who comes back to life has no soul or conscience because it was separated from the body at the time of death. At least there would be hope for a return and a different sort of story. It might even make logical sense.

I dont have a problem with the show killing of characters that just don't work which is how I feel about Daniel and Serena, and althought I liked Paige I realize for most the character just did not work. The problem is there is so much death in such a short period of time. Personally I think they should have had Daniel killed by the Ben that way we could be over all the morning and funerals.

If a primary character is being killed off then I want to see the death used as a catalyst for a good story for the family and friends left behind.

I'm so weary of all the deaths. Death is not good drama. It's lazy drama. Easy way out. One a year is plenty.
I don't think all these characters needed to die. They can be written out in many other ways.
